Using a fax in the home
We have standard phone wiring that was from BT but was switched to Virgin in December last year. Will a fax work on this using the number we use for incoming and outgoing calls? Also how much does it cost to send one?

If your socket takes standard telephone them it will take a fax machine. (The modem in a fax machine signals at audio frequencies.)
Fax calls cost the same as telephone calls, because that is essentially what they are. It's just that the two modems "whistle" at each other down the line. |

I heard that if i plug it into the phone line, i will have to disable its auto receive/answer (set it back to manual) because that would stop incoming and outgoing calls if set to auto? Can anyone confirm this?

It might be cheaper to buy a voice band modem just for the fax

For a start auto-answer won't have any effect on outgoing calls. If you think about it, if that were the case then no one would be able use an answering machine. As for incoming calls, like so many other things, it depends. Many faxes are able to co-exist quite happily with incoming voice calls. The Fax manual will advise you on what answer modes it has and how to set them up. e.g. number of rings before answering. Having said that, unless you expect to be constantly receiving faxes, you can disable auto-answer and use manual receive when some one tips you off that they are sending you a fax. (That is how I have mine setup at home.) |

I picked up a small Philips fax machine on ebay for £7.50 (it cost the seller more than that to post it to me) and plug it in when necessary.
