Those Xmas hampers had a lot to answer for.
Mind you the proof is in the eating, if they tasted OK, would of lasted all over Christmas if Mum had a little fridge full as well.

Everything tastes better when you go camping.

Beans and sausages, delicious.

Me and my sister used to have a Fray Bentos pie every week (back in the olden days... the 1980s!).

She still eats them if she comes over from Spain, in fact I have a baby Fray in the cupboard for her. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole now though!

We also used to eat chicken in white sauce with rice regularly. Again, the olden days.....!

ETA: Please feel free to point and laugh...

My mother used to make me make a sort of cottage pie with a tin of mince in gravy, topped with Smash.

Why do people utterly hate canned goods so much? They're a useful thing. Maybe not every single day, but if it's just the supposed quality of the ingredients they still have to pass the same quality control as everything else.

Fray Bentos pies however are a massive disappointment.

I don't get the tin hate either to be honest.

I have lots of cans in the cupboard - things like cannelini beans, butter beans, chick peas, kidney beans, light coconut milk, an emergency tin of mushy peas when I need comfort food, an emergency tin of baked beans and spaghetti for my sister (I don't eat either!) and I usually have a tin of cut green beans too which I sometimes use in cous cous or as an easy to heat vegetable during the week. Oh, and tinned toms too.

I suppose the 'tin hate' is for the sorts of food which shouldn't really come in a can...

The point was about making a whole meal out of tinned goods. It's common to make a snack from a tin (spaghetti) or use tinned veg as an accompniament (beans, marrowfat peas), but using say five tins of different foods to make one complete meal is not as common.

Tinned tuna and canelloni beans with chopped onion and mustardy vinigrette makes a good dish.

When we camped we often used tins - tomatoes, tuna, beans. All tastes good out of doors.

There is a potato, bacon and onion thing you can get in an everlasting packet which is ok.

Was there as much chicken as this

lots of you tubes about canning chicken and other meats.

Canning very popular in USA - have a look at one on the same page called "New food storage room". We have friends who kids live in America and she tells me they have enough food in storage to last them for 6 months (in case anything happens re work etc) which they rotate.
