I have an opaque shadow on my TV screen in the form of a reversed D. with the straight along the RH side (facing the TV) of the screen and stretching the full height. The tip of the curve is about 8 inches from the RH side and is more intense at that tip.
It is only really obvious when there if no picture.
TheTV is a Toshiba 32WL56 about 5 years old.
Any suggestions?

Most likely the LCD panel is faulty, probably due to dust or smoke inside it.

Toshiba have a reputation for faulty panels, you have done well to get 5 years out of it.

Toshiba make TV's but I don't believe they make the LCD panels?

Dust and smoke ingress is a major problem. I find the worst panels for this are made by AUO, Chi Mei, and LG.

It's a risky business but LG's can be disassembled and cleaned sucessfully. The others, forget it and the reliabillity of AUO panels at present is appalling.

Most Toshiba's were just cheap Vestel clones, same as Bush and other crap makes.

No smoking in room. If it is dust, it stays a remarkably constant shape. I naively thought it was a failed back light.
If it is panel or lighting,is this an expensive job?

Your right, I got caught out buying a Toshiba and many others I know as well,. Along with bush, phillips and other makes like this Toshiba are one to avoid, IMO of course
I think nowadays getting a good quality TV comes down to 2 or 3 makes now.

Yes, for most makes it exceeds the price of the original set - the main exception being Sony, where panels are relatively 'reasonably priced' - but still rarely cost effective.

Doesn't sound like a backlight issue, that usually results in a horizontal dark band if for instance a CCFL fails.

A replacement display would not be economical, but if it's fitted with an LG there is a good chance internal cleaning would restore it to an acceptable quality. Don't try it yourself, take it to your local repair shop if there are any left as the display is very sensitive to static electricity and must be handled correctly.

The cost of dismantling and cleaning if you can find someone competent who will tackle it should come in at around £60-£80
