Help with Kindle please?

My wife has just bought herself a kindle, but it seems that if you don't have wifi (we have ours turned off), Amazon have made life really difficult. Getting the thing registered using the USB lead was a round-the-houses exercise in itself. She's purchased a book, but it won't download because we don't have AZW or something.
Amazon seem to assume that everyone has Wifi, but we don't. Doesn't the Kindle come with the required stuff just to work?

Have you tried connecting it to your computer? Mine came registered. AZW is the file extension for the ebook which comes via amazon whispernet.

Yes, it's connected via USB, but the file won't download - no AZW apparently. The PC can see the kindle, but it's not having it.

Have you tried copying the .azw file from your computer to the Documents folder on the Kindle connected by USB?

I strongly recommend that you download Calibre - it can sync books from your PC to devices like the Kindle. It's a bit like iTunes but for books.

Then it is obviously faulty. I would send it back.

Swap it for a 3G one, it'll save a lot of faffing.

Firstly do you not have Wifi or have you just got it turned off?

Second "No AZW" doesn't sound right. If it is an error message it really doesn't make sense. As others have said azw is the file extension of Ebooks from Amazon, not some sort of software that is required.

If you have downloaded the file onto your PC, where is it? That is the first thing you need to do, find the file you downloaded. Secondly you need to open your Kindle, best way to do this is to go to my computer / computer, then click on the drive named Kindle (E or something similar. Once this has opened open the documents folder.

All you need to do is drag your file (the ebook with AZW file extension) into this documents folder. Eject your kindle safely and you will have it on your kindle.

So now the question remains did you download the file onto your computer - or is it trying to be sent straight to your kindle, if so it will need to be connected to the internet. Only for a couple of minutes usually.

No, it's not downloaded it anywhere. When she clicks on the download book button, she is given a choice of where to put it - PC, Kindle etc. So she chooses Kindle and then it says 'Windows does not recognise the file type'. Why should windows need to recognise it, when it's the Kindle that it will be going on? The kindle already has a couple of 'free' books on, so it must have the necessary software? We are given a choice of searching for it, but all the links lead to third-party download sites, rather than any 'official Kindle' sites.
The Wifi is off through choice, and we are trying to do this via USB. Surely if the software needed to deal with AZW is designed for Kindle books it should be available from Amazon's website?

I've only ever used wifi myself but from looking at the help pages on Amazon it seems that you need to download the files to your PC first ( SAVE don't open) and then transfer over to the Kindle using the usb connection.

She/Windows's trying to open the file after it is downloaded. Just note where the file is placed on the hardisk (most likely Downloads folder), cancel the Windows message and copy the file into 'documents' folder of your Kindle. When you disconnect it from the PC you should see the book on your Kindle. And yes, if you have wi-fi or 3G, things are much simpler, but you only have to do this manual thing once successfully and it will be easy, too.

OK, thanks all. Sue_c - we selected 'save' and it worked. From there it's straightforward of course. From that point on, it's just like my little Elonex on USB.
Thanks again.
