Well 'P*ss*ed Orf.
This might be slightly off topic:
With 5Live covering cricket etc - the only commentry last weekend was often only on the website.

As a result the audio was way behined the RTL video.

I had to fall back to a stream of sky sportf f1, and the picture quality wasnt great.

I currently have a Humax Foxsat HD as the freesat decoder as it supports diseqc. I dont really want to have to replace that with the PVR version because those are expensive.

I've been looking at either DVR(DVD / HDD Recorders) or maybe an old Thompsons Tivo PVR. I want something that can be picked up <£50 off ebay, and all I need it to do is to be able to take the input off the Humax and to be able to pause it, so I can bring the video into alignment with the audio

Anyone have any recommendations?

I still have a Toshiba RDX30 an early HDD/DVD recorder that is somewhat redundant since DSO, I still use it to convert VHS to DVD, however I have it connected to my 19.2 receiver via scart and was able to watch RTL on 'chaseplay' to sync it with the online sound.

It worked and worked well, I can see that with a busy summer of sport coming up on the BBC I may well have the need to do so again.

Thanks for that - cant find that particular model on ebay.
Anyone know if a PHILIPS DVDR3300H would do the trick?

More generally, did these older recorders basically treat external inputs as a regular "channel" what it can do for reguar analog chanels can it do for inputs from eternal sources?

It's difficult to phrase the question in ebay and get a definative answer on the sort of capability I'm after

Thanks

Sorry I misquoted you on the model number it's a Toshiba RDXS30, and yes in the 'Timeslip' function AV1 & 2 can be used just as a live analogue TV program could have been paused.

I believe there was a later model 35/40/45.

cool just found one on ebay - I'll keep an eye on it.
Since BBC have the next 2 races live it's not mega urgent.
At least I have a better idea of what I'm looking for now
Thanks

The HD satbox I bought from B&Q (with dish cabling etc) for £40 does record to USB (even an 8GB stick - in FAT 32 or NTFS) without re-formatting. I haven't tried it on chase-play - but as it has "live-pause" it should work OK buffering a small delay.

Just checked and chase-play works OK - if you 'Stop' you get a message...
"Do you want to stop time shift?
[OK]: Yes [EXIT]:Cancel"
..so it is designed to do this.

The only shortcoming is like all (??) nonFreesat HD sat Boxes in the UK market the EPG is defeated making recording hand operated - except if you use "now/next". I use an older non-recording SD box on loopthrough to get the EPG info. There may be a cheap SD satBox with recording (to USB) that also has an activated EPG.

Model is: TriStar HDSR500.

Yeah I dont really want to change my freesat box, the Humax one is great for most things.

My dvd player is a bit crappy anyway so if I can replace that with something that will also let me get the pause tv functionality then that will be great.

My experience was completely different. I used the 5Live commentary from the internet feed from the point at which the cricket commentary finished, with the RTL video, and they were bang on in sync with each other.

And even better, James Allen wasn't on!!

Actually, I think Legard is OK; I liked him on the radio, but was disappointed that he hadn't learned how to shut up when he transferred to TV.

Allen on the other hand is fantastically well informed and steeped in F1 stats and history, but has simply the most irritating and annoying voice in the history of broadcast radio, and an unceasing ability to fail to think on his feet during a race (at least during broadcast).

In fact, that goes to his twitter account too - after about 5 laps he was bleating on about how important the DRS zone would be at the end of the race, and he repeated this several times throughout the race. In reality the DRS zone had nowt to do with it - it was all about the life in the tyres.

Rant over!

Matt

What was even more annoying was that the cricket commentary was so slow and languid. Totally illogical I know, but I just wanted to shake the commentators and say speed up you guys, get on with it, so we can move on to F1 !!!

Well I got hold of a DVD/HDD recorder to give me the ability to pause video feed off the freesat box to bring it into line with the audio. Incase anyone else is looking, the model I ened up with is the LG RH177 - picked one up off ebay in great condition for just over £30 inc p&p - it does the timeshift on the external input fine. So that's sorted

I've yet to get around to putting up the new dish - waiting for a dry day on a weekend

I wondered why when I switched to TF1 Suisse during the mentally long RTL advert break they weren't showing the race. Hopefully TF1 will be back to normal for the German GP.

Having looked at the viewing figures on f1revs.com I'm amazed at how low the Sky figures are. Wonder if the investment by Sky has been worthwhile for them?

I wish they had viewing figures for Brits watching foreign coverage!

I totally agree, especially the "James Allen wasn't on" bit

I must be as well, as I prefer JA, regardless be it JA or JL allied to RTL, it's still far cheaper than the alternative.

I did Tweet James Allen asking exactly that question, when he tweeted the viewing figures for Montreal, he didn't reply!

True. And to be honest, I'd much prefer JA to Ben Edwards on BBC TV's F1 coverage - Edwards is absolutely awful, and like I said somewhere else before, should be on local radio back in the 80s. He shouldn't be the lead F1 commentator anywhere. He's just awful.

I've actually listened a couple of times to BBC5L's commentary even when the BBC is showing the race live on the telly.

Ben Edwards...sigh.....

I got my new dish up over the weekend and after a lot of fiddling I've got it all setup for 28E and 19E.

Initially I tried it with 19E as the central point, but 28E was missing a lot of channels like that
Had better results centred on 28E with 19E as the offset.

RTL coming in clear with a really strong signal. Tested it during a rain shower this morning and it was also fine then.

I'm debating whether to try and add an extra LNB fro 9E to try and get TF1 Suisse so I can switch between them during ad breaks. We'll see. I think I've spent enough time up the ladder for the time being :-)

What size dish do you have? I'm in Surrey and I had to upgrade to a 90cm Triax TD88 and Titanium LNB to get a stable TF1 signal. TF1 is on a transponder that's weaker than most on 9e. I have a separate 60cm Sky Dish customised for 28.2e,19.2e&13e. I haven't yet tried to setup my TD88 with 4 LNBs.

it's an 80cm one. If it's gonna be tricky I might not bother then, just put up with the RTL adverts.

After the best part of 2 days up a ladder on the weeknd I'm not that keen to go tinckering again anytime soon.

The RTL signal seems stable in bad weather conditions - at that was the main point of the wanting a bigger dish. Should probably just settle with what I have

Id be tempted to give it a go. I originally had a 60cm dish that couldn't cope with the rain. My TD88 is technical 88cm, the signal is pretty strong & though drops in the rain doesn't break up.

I would consider focusing the dish on 13e so it close to 9e. You should get 28.2e ok, when you had problems before was it because you didn't have enough angle across the lnbs, i.e. the 28.2e lnb wasn't high enough?

What type of receiver do you have? I've stumbled across ORF 1 HD this week, will check it out this weekend.
