I'd much rather have the F1 commentary on Sports Extra (for one the audio is perfectly in synch with RTL ) - alas the BBC seam to be happy not to bother (Canada and now Germany Quali and the first half of a race a few GP ago) or put it on Five Live with constant interruptions. A dedicated DAB channel would do me too....

I found it funny at the end watching the Austrian Lauda interviewing the German Vettel which the commentators were then translating into English. If only RTL had an untranslated sound track.. When my housemates actually shut up I can her most of the English underneath the German

what we need to get hold of somehow is rhe Coulthard/Edwards comms as an audio stream. it's provided to other countries, but we obviously pay for it's production via the licence fee, so we have a certain right to it in my view.

I'm amazed how much interest there has been in this thread since I started it before the season began (different username back then). What started off as just RTL SD has now got to a couple of good HD channels on race day.

If you find any other channels do let us know! Thanks

I've been trying to find a channel somewhere with the BBC commentary, I don't think we will have much luck though

Has been an invaluable thread. I think we have plenty of video options available now. Audio is more of a issue - especially with the recent issues with 5Live.

If we could get some alternative audio feed from somewhere then we'd be set

I was watching the race on RTL with the commentary on 5Live through my Skybox and Hi-Fi .The commentary seemed to be about two seconds ahead of the pictures.I don't remember this happening the last times I had this set-up.I wonder what has changed this time.

Certainly not on any European satellite channel - all broadcasters receive their feeds from FOM (except Monaco and Japan) and add their own commentary. How and why would any broadcaster use BBC commentary? Also the BBC only have the rights to broadcast to the British Isles.

I was using DAB and my XDR-S1 normally had audio in sync with the TV (but about a second behind other DAB sets) but this time it was about a second ahead However whenever it's been on five live it always seams to be a tad ahead of RTL HH SH.

Radio 4 LW - which is another DAB channel they have operated before...

Australia and South Africa used to use the BBC Commentary in the past (Murray Walker used to say hi to their viewers). I guess this was mainly used by other English Speaking nations where the viewing figures didn't warrant the cost of providing there own commentary team

And for which the space does not exist if they are operating R5OX?

I used R5L from my BTvision box phonos and RTL Television from the Satbox using CVBS phono.
Not a good picture but better than nothing and better than the sound from elsewhere.

Could we break in analogue sound into an HDMI cable?

I would prefer to use an RGB signal but I haven't got a suitable SCART cable (or adapter) to break the sound into.

The R5L sound led the pictures by a small amount (I would guess 1/2 sec) - but then it is always likely to be so as the pictures are delayed a little when being compressed and then again when being re-assembled by the receiver - so anything less than about 2secs difference is a bonus!
The DVB (Freeview/Freesat) sound is delayed in the receiver to match the video - there is a check for the timing being correct (both the transmission and your receiver) in the BBC HD 'preview'.

They have managed it before - BBC Radio Five Live, BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra, and BBC Tennis - and they will be doing it soon for the Olympics stream too.

IIRC required the dropping of BBC Radio 3, 4, and 7 bit rates. With new encoders they could drop all the 128 services to 112kbps too

Edit: Just spotted this on the Wohnart Twitter feed

BBC R5L Olympics has popped up on BBC National DAB. The main stereo national networks have dropped to 112 kbit/s to accomodate the newcomer.
There is the capacity!

It doesn't even have to be on the radio - though that's obviously preferable. Just an Internet stream of the full 5Live team commentary would be fine. Chase play can sort out timing issues with the video.

It's just the last 2 non BBC events the 5Live coverage has been plagued with mysterious "technical issues" where they've said that there was live coverage on the website for practice/qualy only for a link to the golf /cricket to appear.

A one off you could understand but it's becoming a clear pattern - dont be surprised to see it happen this weekend as well

I did say that was preferable - but 5Live Sports Xtra is DAB only anyway, and while the reach of DAB is growing it's hardly something that's in every car.

At least with an internet stream you can tune into on a smartphone - and many more people will have those than a DAB radio and the "capacity" argument goes away, they cant hide behind that excuse then for not providing a service that they've promised repeatedly of "full 5Live coverage"

Only on some smartphones. Not on mine for example as it is not a platform supported by the BBC and there are very good (privacy) reasons for not wanting a phone on a platform which is supported. Whereas I have access to DAB either in the car or on foot. The "I am alright Jack" argument is always a poor one.

In an ideal world it would obviously be on both - but since the BBC cant seem to sort out "technical issues" it's not worth arguing about.

BBC closed one red button stream on Astra 2B 11954H27500 (6711 - VPID 5200 - APID 5201_5204), now showing test card.

This weekend GP will only main feed and driver tracker.

BBC is reducing the number of sport streams available on satellite to one to the end of 2012, so no more Onboard, Driver tracker and Pitlane feeds on satellite.

And no more BBC F1 outside the UK, when it will only on BBC1 (or BBC2) from Astra 2F (replacement for the Astra 1N, with the UK beam much tighter)

Well with Jake Humphrey nearing the end of his last season with BBC F1 I don't really care to be honest I think he's the best F1 anchor for years, and no-one springs to my mind as a capable replacement, so I think that this, along with the BBC's reduced live F1 coverage will see this as my last BBC F1 season too.

No way I'm paying to see F1 on Sky, and if it's not on RTL FTA next season so be it. I'll survive.

I'm softening my stance on SSF1 slightly. I think they've done an ok job from the few races I've seen on there.

I'm still not willing to pay for the whole sky package as I just cant justify that much outlay.

However if Sky added SSF1 to their new "Now TV" platform (currently just movies but sports is suppose to be added before years end) and it was reasonably priced - maybe SSF1 Qualy and Race for £10 or so per weekend then I'd consider paying for that

I just dont need all those other sky crud - barely watch the channels I've already got.

Re the reference to "if it's not on RTL next year..." in #1046 - Is this a known fact, or are there serious doubts that RTL will have FTA F1 next year? I was planning to add another dish in time for Austin in mid November..

No, I was just saying that if it wasn't available FTA on RTL I wouldn't be too bothered.

I recall reading somewhere that Ecclestone wasn't happy with the number of Brits now watching the coverage on RTL and using Five Live for the commentary. Other people were speculating that he'll probably "take steps" to stop it but I have no idea if it will be or not.

Yeah he's gonna have himself cloned and he's gonna send out all his little mini me's to hang on people satellite dishes and block the signal

Seriously though - what's he gonna do, distrupt RTl and he'll annoy the German audience. RTL and 5Live have contracts - until those come to an end there's not much he can do about them
