My sagem dvr62160sl seems to be totally dead. There is a aint whirring when it's plugged in but no display at all. I took the powerpack to an electronics shop where the bloke told me it seemed to be emitting the right amount of voltage. So I guess it's not the powerpack that's the problem? Is there any chance it could be?

Just trying to avoid having to buy a new box really...

Measuring a power supply off load is no guarantee it is working properly, as any competent electronics repair person should know. Obviously if the voltage is way off what the label says it should be that is one thing. However it is possible for a power supply to produce a "normal" voltage reading off load but then drop to nothing as soon as a bit of current is drawn from it. So you should also try to measure on load as well.

So the power supply could be faulty. It can be difficult to measure voltage on load so perhaps the only way to find out is substitution. Ideally you would need an identical box and power supply for this.

First off try your power supply on a different box (of the same make obviously). If it powers this box properly then the power supply is likely be OK. If not then the power supply is likely to be faulty. You could then try a different power supply on your box and see if that makes it work. If you cannot get one of the exact same type then try one with identical voltage output and at least equal current capacity as the old. Doesn't matter if the current is higher though. So a 12V 2A power supply can be used in place of a 12V 1A unit but maybe not vice versa.

Just be aware that a fault in the box may have taken out your power supply so be careful doing a substitution test. Though a competently designed power supply should be able to handle things like short circuits without destroying itself.

Thanks, Chrisjr.

I will try to get hold of an identical power supply tomorrow.

If the box does turn out to be dead, is it possible to somehow transfer the recordings off it?

You would be better off asking about transferring recordings in the Sagem sub-forum

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=124

I would be surprised if it was impossible but I have never used a Sagem so can't comment on that.

As I posted above if you cannot get the exact same power supply then any generic type with the same voltage output and at least the same or greater current capacity will do. Though check the + and - connections of the DC plug are also the same way round.

Have now got hold of a replacement power pack and is all working fine. Lucky I listened to you and not the man in the shop!

Thanks very much Chrisjr.
