Why is caller display on all mobiles but you must pay BT seperately for the priviledg
e?
Just wondered about this again when I got hold of a cheap caller display unit off Ebay then realised I must subscribe to it for £3 a month or something from BT. Mobile phones by comparison have had caller IDs since the dawn of time (also known as the late 90's). Can you imagine getting a call on your mobile and not knowing who the hell it was from? it's unheard of. Not only that mobile phones keep a detailed call log as standard, but bog standard landline phones don't. It's an old fashioned relic that the landline phone rings and it's more typical not to know whether it's the salesman or the hospital. I'm sure it's been asked before, but why is the technology that can provide caller ID on landlines worthy of a seperate charge given the sheer amount of data that the same landline is expected to handle? |

With a calling plan it is free. Most users of BT have a calling plan.

I think its just another source of income for some telephony companies.
I have O2 home phone which is £10pm line rental (inc free evening and weekend calls) but if I want the1571 service and caller ID, it'll cost an extra £2.75pm (still a cheaper than BT though). Sky include caller ID and 1571 in the line rental (£12.25pm) so it depends on the company. |

It's free with BT too if you make at least 2 calls a month.
The calls can be out of your inclusive allowance (I make mine at weekends because I have the minimum BT package - line rental with the Unlimited Weekend calls plan) so need not cost you anything. |

I think the reason why bt started charging was because people were just taking their line rental, but taking their calls with another provider, so they had to find another source of income and I assume caller display is the most popular extra. |

i don't have caller I.D, when I moved from BT to the company I am with now I never bothered to ask them for it.
If I did i would have to pay as well, but it would still be cheaper than being with BT. |

I think the real reason for a charge for Caller Display and other calling features is because they are digital services and the telephone network is an analogue system for the most part, so the charge is for the conversion from digital to analogue, so it works on the network, hence the premium. With regards to a mobile phone, All the calling features are free because the network is digital already and so are the phones so there is no extra cost.

You have to pay for it if you are with Virgin as well, unless you takeout their Call Features package then it is included with all the other Features
at a cost of £3.60 a month at the moment |

It's not free with Talk Talk by default, but they too have a 'privacy' style option which makes it free, if you take it.

It doesn't matter which isp your with for add ons such as Caller Display your isp asks BT to put it on your line, I know because my isp couldn't sort Caller Display on our line due to a mix up on my isp's side BT rejected the request? so I asked where does this leave me? I'll tell you going back to BT for our landline & calls at the end of the month, Isps are nothing more than middlemen when it comes to " Home Phone ". I'll never go back to any isp offering Home Phone once bitten etc.
