The thread is back!

Not necessarily this kind of songs. He would be just a good pop artist without a specific lyrical limit

He was a cultural icon, you're right, but was he a POP icon?

'Bionic' is a gem, though! It failed for numerous factors that a brand new MALE popstar might not have to deal with (extended break, hatred from other fanbases etc).Besides, if a man (regardless of his sexual orientation of course) crawled with a leather suit, humped men and girls in his video and sing 'Glam' and 'Desnudate', I'm sure his album would become a blockbuster

Oh, btw, when it comes to the male pop artist singing about empowerment ('Express Yourself' type of songs as Nobody Knows said) COULD be successful with the right management.Anyone can be successful with the right team behind them, so this artist would be off to a good start too.The thing is that if he could maintain the powerful lyrical context, he could have an actual career as opposed to having a successful debut and 5 years of momentum and then fading

And also...

Yes, and that the majority of critics said it was shit. About three/four songs aside (all on the bonus CD, I have to add) and I'm not the only one who has expressed this view.

I LOVE 'Bionic'.OK, it isn't a groundbreaking electropop masterpiece, but it's an amazing album full of anthems. And, with all due respect, I think you're wrong about the 4 tracks.'You Lost Me', 'I Am', 'All I Need' and 'Prima Donna' are on the standard versions and they were fairly well received alongside with the 4 tracks on the deluxe that were instant standouts for critics So, even the professional critics had 8 tracks to praise out of an album

Besides, the reason why 'Bionic' was bashed so ruthlessly is because it didn't live up to Christina's standards. If it was released as the debut album of another female artist, it would get better reviews, more media momentum and a better chart run. Now, if it was released by a male artist, it would stand out so much that it could be an absolute smash.I can't be sure about the commercial aspect, but when it comes to pop culture, it would be pretty huge

Let's be honest, Bionic is no worse than 'The Fame' when it comes to filler...

The best in terms of quality of male pop star is chris brown (with rnb as well) but apparently his singles haven't set the world alight in the states. Look At Me Now did well but not pop.

Chris Brown and Usher are talented singers and dancers, but there is not an artistic, musical or cultural bone in their bodies. Their songs are generic club RnB claptrap about dancing and love. They were flung into the industry at a very young age and never given the time to mature as intellectuals or people so there is just no artistic value there whatsoever. It's music designed to sell and to dance to, that's all, nothing wrong with that, but then we get Usher trying to pretend he's the successor to Michael Jackson and everyone just laughs at him.

The only true male solo artists in the charts are rappers like Eminem, Kanye or (as a native British variant) Plan B. In some ways, though, the domination of rap in the past ten years has been bad, because every male solo artist has to play up to this hardman, 'street' archetype to be taken seriously and any sight of an actual instrument sends the masses of idiots running. Then we get the lower rung of solo males who churn out very generic, lazy and identikit songs like Chipmunk, Example, Mike Posner and so on, and then lower than that Cowell's puppets who don't last very long.

Some male solo artists are out of that entire orbit like Cee Lo Green but they're sort of trapped if they don't get hits. The traditional musos and weird artists who have indie cred like Patrick Wolf and iamx are okay but imo their songs are not quite good enough to make that transition to appealing to a lot of people.”

well chris brown messed up his career after he beat up rihanna. then, with usher well he hasn't really come up with nothing interesting since confessions. but he's trying to stay strong by going pop lately because r&b music isnt selling right now.
