optical connection
If I connect optical cable from sky box to Audio In RGB/DVD socket (3.5mm) via adaptor, will it output 5.1 sound from the optical output digital audio out, also will the automatic volume level work, all these connections are on the back of a LG 32LF77 TV,

It will output multi-channel surround if available, but the input on the TV will be for analogue stereo audio only.
You need to take the optical output to an A/V receiver / amp that has an optical input. |

Any such converter would simply convert it to stereo, but the input on the TV is only stereo anyway.

No, the 3.5mm jack is stereo only. Also I don't think you will get any sound on the TV unless your sky box is plugged into the RGB/DVD port.
As Roush says, you need to directly connect the sky box to your AV amp. |

There is a form of optical connector that is built into a 3.5 mm jack socket. Normally they can take either a standard analogue stereo jack or an optical digital connection.
It is extremely unlikely that the jack socket on the telly is a combo type. So plugging a totally passive adapter into it will just result in the light from the optical cable casting a dim red glow in the guts of the socket but doing nothing useful. There would simply be a deafening silence from the telly, it certainly would not be converted to analogue stereo without some electronics in the way. In any case the TV is unlikely to be able to understand any surround sound format anyway. It would need something like a Dolby Digital and/or DTS surround sound codec plus the necessary speakers to make any sense of the input. And as c4rv says unless the Sky box is connected to the adjacent video input socket you would get either sound or video depending on which input you select but not both. |
