haha, what a complete pile of crap from HTC. They go on and on about the update and then announce this, a developer install at your own risk version.

Well done !!

Bear in mind that this is a developer update, not a user update.

HTC have failed on there promise to deliver the update by end of July.

Never read so much rubbish from a company in my life. The lads and lasses in the custom rom world are looking on with either a smug look or a perplexed look or both. They have mated GB and Sense on a Desire with no problems at all eve nwith the "limited amount" of memory onboard.

The most confusing thing about it all is the fact that the HTC WildfireS has Gingerbread [at no cost to features].

It has even less ROM and RAM than the HTC Desire, so what is HTC's issue?

HTC's issue must be to get eveyone to upgrade asap to the newer models. I wish they were more honest and said this because the opposite end-result may be true and people will move away from HTC as a manufacturer.

This happened with Motorola when they promised a FroYo upgrade to the Cupcake powered Dext/Cliq and reneged on it which led to mass criticism and a move away from Motorola through lack of trust in the company.

Why would anyone, much easier to hop over to xda developers and get a rom there, one which works and has doesn't remove basic functions.

Quite how HTC thought this was an update I have no idea. How putting it on a website equates to 'rolling out the update' is beyond me. It comes dwon to trust and they have lost that from me.

Its no doubt released for the XDA community to adapt.
Wait a few weeks for the relative bits to be pulled into an ultra fast ROM.

I did mine last night, everything seems to work O.k. Can't say I've noticed much difference, to be honest.

That's because HTC have provided the US English ROM, not the worldwide English ROM.

The more l think about this the more l am annoyed that HTC have not provided an OTA to 2.3 and from reading on their Facebook page will not be providing any further updates.

The phone was there flagship phone up until recently and l have mine for about 15 months.

Looks like l will be going down the rooting road then. Will seriously consider not buying HTC when l upgrade phone in a few months time.

They haven't provided an OTA update because to get the installation onto the phone requires the memory to be repartitioned, which apparently can't be done via an OTA update.

I installed the update on my Desire last night. Took about 5-10 minutes and was completely painless. Before I started I ran MyBackup Pro (already installed) to back up my texts, settings etc. to my SD card, ran the update, then reinstalled MyBackup and did a restore through it. Voila. All good.

Go to Menu - Settings - Voice Input & Output - Text To Speech Settings - Language, and here you can choose English UK, so no more American voices.

If you're ever down Leicester way, there'll be a few pints behind the bar at the Lamb and Flag for you - that's sorted out a really annoying problem. Thanks

Actually scrub that - it hasn't changed. All the other speech programmes are in UK English, the satnav is still yank English

Ah. Just tried it on mine too and the same happens here (not that I use it normally - got a TomTom in my car.) I might be wrong but it could be because the RUU HTC have provided is a US English one, not an international one. I think Google Maps uses Pico TTS for its speech synthesis and if you look at the settings for that there are numerous languages installed but the choices are greyed out. As Google Maps is now part of the ROM it could be that the speech language is now fixed, unless Google produce an update. I also did a Google search for you and saw lots of people asking if the voices can be changed and it appears they can't... yet.

What is your free space on the phone like before and after?

Before, I had about 20-odd MB free.
Now I have 42.10MB free. Same apps installed.
