Why Is The iPhone So Hyped Up?

My friend has an iPhone and I've used it a few times and its not the be all and end all that she has told me before. Its just a touch screen phone, with a music player a camera and a good internet browser.

The only unique feature is the App Store on it which is very good and probably the only reason I wish I had an iPhone. But my friend says on her iphone 4, the phone drops calls and the 3g network isn't any good because of the way she holds it in her hand

So why is the iPhone so hyped up? I have an LG KC780 which is over 2 years old and has an 8mp camera - iPhone only has a 5mp. The music player can be found on any phone - its hardly a unique feature unless the incorporate the finger wheel in the near future.

I think its because of the Apple tag. Nokia, Samung and Blackberry's are all better phones and my LG hasn't broke once when I drop it, while I've heard stories of iPhones cracking when it falls out of their pocket.

So what is it? Do you feel the same way or is it because I don't have an iPhone I just don't get the attraction?

I've got an iPhone (3GS) and absolutely love it. It suits me perfectly (browsing, apps and Twitter/Facebook is all I really use it for together with iPod and family snaps).

I didn't try out anything else when I bought it, but I haven't once regretted my purchase. I know other phones have higher specs and more customisation, but to be honest, that's just not important enough for me. My iPhone does everything I want it to do, and does it well.

My wife had a Nokia smartphone which she hated and now has an iPhone 4 and she too loves hers.

But what amazes me is that some people seem to have a pathelogical hatred of Apple, almost personal, and just cannot accept that people like their products. Just live and let live. I'm happy with what I've got, you're happy with what you've got, so what's the problem.

Believe it or not, I didn't buy an iPhone because it was an iPhone (despite what a lot of people on DS think of us iPhone users) I bought it because it did everything I needed it to.

Fair dos thedrewser, an honest post there. I despise Apple because of it's business practice, stifling competition and rival r&d by exploiting a very weak US patent system and behaving in a hypocritical manner when complaining about rivals "stealing" from Apple, like the word iPhone, and the company name Apple and claiming world firsts when they have no right to.

Yes, they have no scruples copying everyone else, but as soon as someone has the same idea or pinches one of their ideas they hit them hard.

Plus i think their products are junk. macs, macbooks etc all made by a cheap Chinese company called foxconn using standard off the shelf components.

The iphone is nothing special either. I bought an iphone 4 and i didn't hate it, it was ok but, at the time my pals Desire looked much nicer and worked a lot better as well. So i ditched the iphone 4 and got a desire HD. Loved it, so much better than the iphone 4. Now have a Galaxy SII which is even nicer and better.

Either your friend doesn't actually have an iPhone in the UK, or she's not telling the whole truth.

The iPhone dropping calls was a major issue. On AT&T. In NYC. Where the network was very heavily congested. Dropped calls are NOT a phone issue, its a signal or contention issue - both down to the network. As for the "3G network not being any good because of the way she holds it"... She will lose a little bit of signal when really grabbing the phone and gripping it very tightly, but for general usage the phone is fine - unless of course she is on a fringe coverage area. Again, network related.

And again, its the same bloody arguments every time.

The higher the megapixels do not necessarily mean the better the picture. It means the bigger the picture (or the higher resolution). As it happens, the iPhone 4 does only have a 5mp camera, however it has a massive sensor and good quality lens on it meaning it takes very very impressive photos - its been widely considered as one of, if not the best mobile camera, despite people blindly saying "the camera's crap because it doesn't have as many megapixels as my 2 year old LG".

As for the music player, I don't see the LG syncing with iTunes, managing playlists, or playing nice with 3rd party accessories. The reason its a popular phone is that it does exactly what people want a phone to do, and it does those features very well indeed, nobody can deny this.

And as soon as you started I KNEW this was coming... Its because its Apple.

No it isn't. And, no matter how many times I say it, nobody listens.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "BETTER" OR "BEST" PHONE

Each phone does different things in different ways which suits different people. Although you think that Nokia, Blackberry and Samsung manufacture "better" handsets. Specification wise - yes, some of the phones have higher specifications. The average consumer doesn't care about "Oh this phone has a Quad Core processor with 17Gb of RAM and 738Gb of internal storage". They care about the user experience - and the user experience with the iPhone is universally very easy.

If indeed you are correct, and Blackberry's are "better" handsets, then why are their profits dropping like a sack of potatoes?

Why are they having to lay off so many staff to cut costs?

True, Samsung are breaking through into Smartphones, and do have an impressive lineup of handsets, however, again, the company profits as a whole are coming down. True this is mainly due to falling TV sales, however the smartphone arm is smaller than Nokia. And Nokia aren't doing so well.

At the end of the day, profits aside. There's only one conclusion to this thread and it should end here. There's been too much discussion over this and it just ends up as flat out arguing.

There is no such thing as a "better" phone as different phones do different things for different people. Apple is popular because it does a number of things very well. People are entitled to own whatever phone they like, and should be able to without the threat of forum threads, like this one, saying "Why did you buy an iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia, and Samsung are much better".

Best post on this thread. Agreed on every front.

I personally don't like Apple or their products, but I won't disregard people who do decide to get them.

The App store isn't exactly 'unique' nowadays, with every other smartphone OS containing one (Android, Windows Phone 7, WebOS, BlackBerry OS) granted, they don't have the same amount of apps, then again they haven't been around as long.

My opinion on the 'better/best' handsets thing is this: It doesn't matter what its specification is or what it can do. As long as it does what YOU want it to at a reasonable speed then it's fine. i.e. you wouldn't want a phone that keeps on freezing or is ridiculously slow at performing certain tasks.

I would say the only reason the iPhone is 'hyped up' is because of Apple's advertising of the product. Believe it or not Apple do have perhaps some of the best advertising in the world.

P.S. The music player is iTunes, you get access to the iTunes store and other various services. That's what makes it 'stand out' from the crowd.

I had one, it was shit. Battery life (as with all smartphones) was crap, the software keyboard just bugged me, having to keep it turned on if you want to use the alarm was annoying, most of the apps were trash (ever heard of quality not quantity?) in short there's better phones for half the money out there.

I've actually got one. I dont hate it. It doesnt drop calls - because I use a cygnett case.

However, I'm just not blown away by it. And I'm constantly got this feeling that its not really my device by the fact I cant install anything from anywhere except the app store on it.

The very fact that Jobs has decided to seal off Cydia from me, is enough to make me sell the bloody thing and switch back to my multi-os open platform Nokia N900.

Just proves my point that we all have different needs and likes/dislikes. I quite like the software keyboard, never use the alarm (although I never turn the phone off anyway) and I have loads of apps (free and paid for) which I love and are very useful.

So whilst another phone may be better for you, it wouldn't be better for me.

Agreed that pixel counts are far from being the most important factor, but no way can anyone seriously claim the iPhone 4 has the best camera on the market - its colour balance is badly out of whack (although i've had plenty of dedicated cameras with the same problem), its lousy in very low lighting conditions .... but compared to the majority of the competition its not too bad, its just that the competition are generally lousy.

Absolutely totally and utterly correct.

Everyone has a choice, and what is best will depend on your requirements and personal preferences.

My personal phone is an N8, it does what I want. Have a BB Curve for work, and its by far and away the best device for corporate mail.

Don't personally like Apple products. That said if someone wants a iphone thats their choice. My own opinion is its over rated and over hyped but thats just a personal opinion. My ex had a 3GS. My mate has an iphone 4 and says its the best phone he's had. Everyones different I certainly wouldnt judge people for having an iphone.

Absolutely. Spot on.

The same also applies in reverse however, and this is what I and I suspect others find annoying - anytime someone posts a "recommend a smartphone" thread containing the expression "not an iphone" a bunch of Apple fans jump on it with the attitude of "how can anyone not want an iphone" and refuse to accept that someone (for example) doesn't like itunes, doesn't want everything synced, doesn't like touchscreen keyboards etc etc.

The iPhone is hyped up a great deal. However, having owned many Nokia's and Samsung's and now an iPhone, I have to say that the iPhone is the best mobile by a country mile for me.

It may be a 'fancy' phone, but it does everything I want it to do and does it very well. Without a doubt it is the best mobile I have ever owned.

One man's meat is another man's poison. The world would be a boring place if everybody liked the same things.

I've been using my iPhone 4 since May this year and so far, I can say its the best phone I've ever had.

Had an HTC prior to the iPhone and I currently use a Blackberry for business. My husband currently has the HTC Desire and is seriously considering upgrading to the imminent iPhone 5.

I absolutely love my iPhone. It does everything I want it to do and does it exceptionally well.

I'm hooked on the Kindle application I downloaded on it and have bought and read many books since May.

For me, and unless iPhone goes downhill in the foreseeable future, they've got a long-term customer.

Well Tiron another example of a commendable, honest, straight forward answer. No attempt to brag up the iphone in relation to competitors, no pulling silly "facts" out of thin air, just said how you felt.

iPhones are waaaay overrated.....

I had one for a while, then upgraded to a HTC Desire, which was much better

I did everything the iphone did, and more. and I reckon android is a much better OS the iOS,

And I'm looking to upgrade to the HTC Sensation soon
