1. A new two-year full time foundation degree course is to launch in Birmingham, aimed at school leavers wanting to get into the radio industry. Skillset and the Birmingham Skillset Media Academy have developed the Internship in Radio Production, with students being taught by people with first-hand experience in the BBC, commercial radio and community radio. Students will also get an industry professional who’ll act as their personal mentor. We’re told the course has strong links to the BBC and Community Media Association as well as commercial radio groups Absolute, Global and Bauer. Skillset’s chief executive, Dinah Caine, said: “The foundation degree is just one part of Skillset’s work to create an industry-recognised talent pipeline for young people pursuing careers in the UK radio industry. This work includes the recent launch of the Route into Radio website, which is helping young people find out more about careers in radio through video case studies of people currently working in the industry.” More

2. Ofcom has shortened the licence period for Somerset station Total Star by one year, and has re-advertised the licence. The regulator found the station deliberately transmitting at several times above its permitted power level, meaning the licence will now expire in July 2012. Ofcom said that the breach was serious because of its scale, the length of time for which it continued, the public safety risk it could have posed, and the overall failure of the licensee to maintain control of its service. The station is owned More FM Ltd, but is broadcasting as Total Star Somerset. Field engineers took measurements and visited the Minehead transmission site and reported that a new transmitter and antenna array had been installed, without consultation with Ofcom – itself a breach of the Code – and that the station was transmitting a directional high powered signal several times greater than that permitted under the terms of the Licence. More

3. Ofcom has approved a request by Now Digital Ltd to extend the coverage area of the local radio multiplex licence for Exeter & Torbay so that it also includes North Devon. The approval comes despite the majority of the 234 consultation responses being against the proposals. Most objections were on the grounds that it would enable the holder of the existing FM licence for Barnstaple to secure its renewal. Now that approval has been given, Global Radio’s FM licence for the area has been automatically extended by 12 years. More

4. GMG Radio’s Manchester Rock Radio station is to be re-branded as Real Radio XS from September, while the Glasgow station looks like being sold to Brand Managing Director Billy Anderson. The group says the new name in Manchester will ‘benefit from the brand strength and scale of sister station Real Radio’. 106.1 Real Radio XS will also be available on digital radio for the first time as it joins the North West regional multiplex. The group is in discussions with Real and Rock Radio Brand Managing Director Billy Anderson about selling the Glasgow Rock station to him and a consortium of private investors. He will leave GMG at the end of August after 10 years with the group. More

5. Ofcom has launched a consultation to seek the industry and public’s views on how best to improve DAB coverage to match that of FM ahead of digital radio switchover. The regulator has come up with a number of predictions for what future transmitter networks might have to look like in order to achieve different coverage scenarios. As part of the research ahead of the consultation – which will feed into the government’s Digital Radio Action Plan – Ofcom has looked a defining ‘editorial areas’ for local stations, since the current multiplexes do not geographically match up with every single radio station’s current FM coverage area. More

6. Digital switchover for radio will be delayed by another two years, a leaked government document reveals. The ‘aspirational’ target date of 2015 has been abandoned, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport memo. The technology has failed to grip the public’s imagination as the shift to digital TV did, and there is opposition from FM loyalists who cannot see the point of moving the major stations off the analogue service. The document, understood to have been written by civil servant John Mottram, says that the radio industry is unlikely to be able to meet the infrastructure costs, linked to building transmitters, before 2017. More

7. Sylvain Tack is a colourful figure from the Flemish music scene. The farmer’s son, who started as a baker of Suzy Waffles, launched himself successfully into the music business. But he became best known for starting the offshore station Radio Mi Amigo, which officially launched on 1st January 1974. Initially, the Mi Amigo programmes were made in Benelux, but due to problems with the authorities Tack moved over to Playa de Aro in Spain, where he continued to produce radio programmes. More

Newsie Bits

1. To ensure that Sky customers continue to enjoy the richest selection of 3D TV programming available, Sky has formed a series of new partnerships with leading 3D content providers. First, Sky has formed a brand new 3D production company, Colossus Productions, with leading UK Independent producer, Atlantic Productions, producers of Sky 3D’s BAFTA award-winning Flying Monsters 3D. And second, Sky has confirmed 3D output deals with Disney, Discovery Networks and MTV, three leading pay TV channel brands who have invested in a series of innovative 3D films, documentaries and live music productions. More

2. Copying music CDs and DVDs will soon be legal, following recommendations made by the Hargreaves review, which found the old laws outdated and impractical in today’s world. The change in rules means that music lovers will now be able to copy discs and transfer them to MP3 format, enabling them to listen to their music across a number of different platforms. The move is expected to clarify copyright laws and boost the economy by £8bn within the next few years, according to Business Secretary Vince Cable. He said that the law as it stands is “stifling innovation.” More

3. Ofcom has unveiled its findings into how the Digital Economy Act could block websites that infringe on copyright. The communications watchdog has concluded that, although it's technically possible for ISPs to block sites, that there are privacy issues and little likelihood of an effective framework for action to be taken. Ofcom's report backs up what Business Secretary Vince Cable is expected to say later on Wednesday: that blocking plans are unworkable. The report – which is available as a PDF – looks at the different ways in which sites can be blocked and then if there is a feasible and fair framework for doing this. More

4. Friday 29th July 2011 – Britain’s second biggest pay TV broadcaster, UKTV, has cemented its pay TV commitment by signing a landmark content deal with Sky to launch its first video on demand service on Sky Anytime+ and a further three high definition channels. This move will make the award-winning network Britain’s largest HD content partner, strengthening UKTV’s HD offering to five of its 10 evocative channel brands. With Eden HD and Good Food HD already available to Sky viewers, Watch HD and Dave HD are scheduled to launch in October, with Alibi HD going live in 2012. More (arras/speculator)

Sky and Atlantic Productions will join forces to create a brand new production company, Colossus Productions, to develop original 3D programming for both UK and international audiences. The home-grown shows will be showcased on Sky 3D, Europe’s first dedicated 3D TV channel, before being distributed to other platforms and countries. Sky has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Atlantic Productions and has a number of existing commissions in production, including a 3D series on plants currently being filmed at Kew Gardens, presented by Sir David Attenborough, and The Bachelor King 3D, a theatrical-release feature documentary, also with David Attenborough, that looks at the lives of penguins in South Georgia. 7. Saorview has recently added to its website that it recognises some installation trade organisations. Namely, ISAA (Ireland's new installer trade body), CAI, and National Guild of Master Craftsmen. More

8. With the imminent changes to Sky Digital's bundle prices, Star TV has confirmed that three of its channels will be made more widely available to subscribers. From Thursday 1st September, Star Plus, Star Gold and Star One will all be available as part of Sky Digital's basic package (entry level). With this, the channels will see a rise of over 3 million in their subscriber numbers due to the re-packaging of Sky’s basic bundles, representing a 48% rise in connected households. More

9. SES Astra has signed an agreement for satellite capacity with ITV, the UK public service/commercial broadcaster. The long-term agreement provides for the renewal of ITV’s existing capacity and for additional capacity to support future development with ITV’s channel offer. More

10. Disney is extending its HD portfolio of channels with the rollout of the Disney Channel in the superior format. Disney Channel HD, aimed at children aged 6-14, will launch on Sky on 16th September with a series of music shorts performed by Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez, dubbed Disney Pop Stop (working title). More

11. Sky Sports News becomes first channel to go on air from new west London production facility previously known as Harlequin 1. Sky Studios, Sky’s state-of-the-art production facility formerly known as Harlequin 1, began broadcasting with Sky Sports News the first channel to be transmitted live from the new building. The opening of Sky Studios is part of Sky’s growing commitment to home-grown British content. Last month, the company announced that it would increase investment in British programmes by more than 50% to £600 million a year over the next three years. More

12. Euronews has announced plans to restructure its governance and organisation from December 2011. The company says the moves are necessary in order to support its continued development and to fully equip it to meet future challenges. In the intervening period an executive board that comprises of Chairman Philippe Cayla and managing director Michael Peters will run the news channel. More

3D Section

1. A group of research scientists has invented a device that eliminates some of the potentially eye-warping effects of 3DTV displays. With a patent pending and currently only in laboratory form, the device has received interest from leading consumer electronics companies. The system is designed to combat ‘vergence-accommodation conflict’ an effect that afflicts certain viewers of 3D and causes eye-discomfort and headaches. "Without appropriate vergence, you would see double, and without appropriate accommodation, your vision is blurred," explained Martin Banks, a professor of the Visual Space Perception Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. More

2. Nearly 40% of homes in Western Europe will own a 3D TV by 2015, according to research firm Futuresource Consulting, equating to an installed base of nearly 65 million. "Whether consumers use the feature or not, they will be buying it by default, as the technology will increasingly be incorporated in many of the sets in manufacturers' product ranges. And where previously there was little 3D content available, the growth and acceptance of 3D is now being driven by the broadcasters. Going forward, the increased availability of 3D content will encourage viewers to engage with and evaluate 3D offerings." said Futuresource Director and Co-Founder Jim Bottoms,at the 2011 Futuresource Entertainment Summit on 16th June. More

3. While the war over active versus passive 3D TVs rages on, it could be all but obliterated by the development of an autostereoscopic television which does away with the glasses altogether. Some manufacturers, like Toshiba, have committed to rushing out a glasses-free 3D TV as early as 2012, but Panasonic has now said that it'll be at least five years before it has an auto-stereoscopic 3D set on the market. Speaking at Intellect's Consumer Electronics 2011 show, Panasonic's marketing manager Andrew Denham explained why: "Its not there yet. The physics of it – you can't get there without hurting the 2D experience at the moment." More

4. The Meduza – the first single beyond 4K digital stereoscopic 3D (S3D) camera ever developed – have been invited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to shoot the final Space Shuttle Launch at Cape Canaveral, which is due to take place in mid-July. More

5. While the industry casts its eyes toward the day glasses-free auto-stereo displays go mainstream, holographic 3D systems may not be far behind. Consumer electronics manufacturers have been investigating the ground-breaking work being performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Samsung is a sponsor of the MIT Media Lab where a team is researching holographic capture and display technologies. More

6. 3DTV WORLD FORUM-LONDON. Sky has no plans to offer its dedicated 3DTV channel Sky 3D as a stand-alone service, preferring instead to provide it bundled for HD subscribers. It has also, according to John Cassy, director of Sky 3D, detected evidence that some customers are upgrading in order to receive 3D. Speaking at the opening session of the 3DTV World Forum, Cassy in addition said that by Sky’s estimates, it will be another 5-7 years before glasses-free 3DTV will be available on a mass market scale. More

7. Partially sighted people report an improved picture quality for 3DTV over standard 2D, but the differences are not as significant as for the fully sighted. The conclusions come from a new report prepared for the RNIB by i2 Media. Thirty-two partially sighted people and a control group of 43 fully sighted people were shown a series of 2D and 3D clips under three viewing conditions: 3D with active 3D shutter glasses, 2D with de-activated 3D shutter glasses and 2D without 3D glasses. Dr Jonathan Freeman and Dr Jane Lessiter found half of the partially sighted sample preferred 3D with activated 3D shutter glasses to 2D with or without 3D shutter glasses that had been de-activated. Those that indicated a preference for 2D often suffered from conditions that nullified some of the depth effects of 3D so that the difference between the two. More

Just for clarity, can you name these channels? (presume you mean Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, TCM, Watch, etc...)
The channels are as follows

Disney Channel HD
Cartoon Network HD
Animal Planet HD
Watch HD
Dave HD
TCM HD

Which according to my math makes at least six new HD channels to launch on the Sky platform soon.

Only three of those HD channels are confirmed to launch before the end of the year -

- Disney Channel HD (16th September)
- Dave HD (October)
- Watch HD (October)

The others, namely -

- Animal Planet HD
- TCM HD
- Cartoon Network HD

- are shown in the latest Sky results presentation but no mention is made of any launch dates. I'd be surprised if none of them launched before the end of the year, but it isn't yet confirmed that they will.

Yep, most of the changes I've posted today most likely occurred days ago.

At least the information is now posted for anyone who's interested.

The 'Gaydar Radio' label on 11.224 V is now broadcasting a radio service, not sure if it's Gaydar or another service at ths stage.

Edit: It's 'Liberty'.

Can't be a transponder change, 'Liberty' is already on 11.224 V.

Sadly despite much pressure on SES we havent been able to persuade them to carry tomorrow nights Astra 1N launch on 28E.

If anyone without multisat capability wants to watch have a look here -

http://www.videocorner.tv/index.htm

coverage should start about 2230 BST for a 2253 lift off. (Assuming no more delays)

If you are semi interested its worth watching at least the launch and first few minutes of the climbout - the Ariane 5's look fabulous as they take off

It's a pity they couldn't have put coverage on 28.2E, surely to them the overheads are minimal for couple of hours Ad-Hoc use? Maybe they don't want to pay a competitor (Eutelsat) for Occasional Use capacity on EB1's unused transponders?

Looking forward to watching tomorrow, lets all hope for a successful lift-off.

Arianespace have issued another press release today as the Ariane has now been transferred to the launch pad in preparation for tomorrow evenings launch.
