I think part of the problem with people not buying CD's any more isnt actually the fault of the music industry the internet or even simon cowel instead i think its at least 50% to do with the CD itself. Who wants to carry cd's around ? We want everything portable hand held and where possible on our phones. So why not a) Standardise the size and shape of memory cards then b) sell albums and movies on memory cards and finally c) include a memory card slot on everything (tv's, dvd players, radios, sterios ect) i know id rather buy an album on a memory card for my phone ect than a cd.

Sorry, I disagree. It's not out of date for everyone.I cannot picture myself not buying albums.Even if I have the whole tracklist on my computer, I still don't think that I really OWN the album before buying the physical.

The size, look etc are part of the CD's attractiveness. I know I'd rather get music out of my CD music collection than pulling out some tiny memory cards..

Memory cards would be easier to lose, hence more of a risk. The CD has more of a physical sensibility to it, you can hold it, view lyrics, artwork, credits and keep it forever. It's a sense of security as you know it isn't going anywhere.. people feel digital things are more prone/at risk of being damaged/lost ect

Apparently that with all new Ford cars (I think model lines rather than still manufactured old ones) now have an iPod dock as the standard music system? You have to pay extra for a CD slot...

No their not out of date.

Not everybody wants EVERY track of EVERY album they've EVER bought on a bloody ipod.

They're not out of date but they could be. I think the problem is not everybody uses itunes/spotify etc yet which is why people still want CD's. Me personally I haven't bought a CD since 2004 and with the ease of spotify I have no need to.

I don't own an MP3 player, I don't see the point... and if I want to listen to something when I am on my laptop, I just use Youtube. I like to have a real collection, not just a list on a screen.

The thing about cd's is that, while Mp3's are easy to DL and practical and Vinyl is an attractive and tactile item, the CD seems to be the worse of both worlds.

It doesn't have the ease of access of an mp3 and the practicality of being able to carry around oodles in a tiny little mp3 player and it doesn't have the "nice to own-ness" of a vinyl.

That said I inherantly don't like the idea of paying for a digital product that I don't get to hold in my hands but if I want to buy an album from an american post hardcore band I can get it instantly on itunes quite cheaply or spend a lot more and wait ages for it to be shipped over from the states by the label or a independant record shop. My heart says wait for the CD or vinyl but the reality is that I end up just getting it off itunes instantly.

This is a great point! It's just that I cannot really relate to your prospective because when I was born there were no vinyls available, so I never really got familiar with them.

I still buy CDs and can't see me stopping buying them any time soon. I have an MP3 player as well and bung my CDs on there for portability

I also have a USB socket in the car so 4 16gb memory sticks does the job there as well

Still got a loy of vinyl as well !

Absolutely right. 'Real' being the operative word.

Oh... and...

vinyl has been mentioned...
cd's are mentioned...
MP3's are here...

...but what about the humble cassette tape?

Think of the cassette tape, the biro has been needed much less since the decline of the cassette tape... oh how I remember pausing record between songs during the weekly top 40 countdown!

I don't think there is much danger of your hopes being dashed... unless that GaGa idiot decides to release something on cassette... to be different... obviously... bless her cotton socks... and straitjacket!

I just use cds to burn music to for dj'ing purposes on a cdj player..Cd's just don't feature in my life anymore..The lappy has all my music, aswell as backed up on another hdd, I stream or store music to the ps3 and have the iPhone for when on foot. My car has a cd player but that gets superseded but the usb input or ipod connection.

I see the attraction for having physical cds with the printed dics and booklets, for me however they just take up too much space, and using mp3 is a quicker process than using cds.

Just my daily account of things...

I find this silly. If I find out about a group whose music I like enough, I will order their CDs.

I like having physical CD's. It's nice to go through the collection every now and then and pull one out that I haven't listened to in ages. I like the booklets but I feel absolutely robbed when they don't contain the lyrics! That's my only pet peeve about (some of) them.

Exactly. Iike you i burn CD's because it makes DJ'ing a bit easier other than that I have no practical use for them anymore.

Mp3 is just more convenient for me, and the CD isn't a tactile enough item for me to get any pleasure out of owning one. The mp3 is the most pratical format for me, and vinyl has the sentimental attraction of owning a nice object but I find less and less room for the CD in my life.
