Just picked mine up from PC World - not the best start, no display/demo unit or any other sign that it was for sale. 3rd salesperson I spoke to thought there might be some 'out back'.

Anyhow, bought it and had 30 mins or so playing with it (stuck in work but have it tethered to my Desire). Very, very nice screen, much better than my old Xoom (just been returned/refunded). Very light and easier to hold than Xoom. Back is a bit creaky whereas Xoom was rock solid but nothing major.

Honeycomb 3.1 preloaded and irons out some of bugs in 3.01 that the Xoom seems to be eternally constrained to - but not had enough time to fully explore. Loads of Touchwiz widgets but I have deleted them off the homescreens for now.

Happy so far.

What do you think of it now that you've had it for a day? Much better than the Xoom?

Definitely better - much easier to hold and operate due to slimmer form and lighter weight. Lack of usb and only 16gb storage not a problem for me personally - use Google music and have my photos on Picasa. They stream faultlessly.

You're incredibly lucky to have got one. Apparently a judge in Germany has just put an injunction on them being sold in the EU (except Netherlands) because of the ongoing patent dispute with Apple.

SO why did this never happen with laptops?

I very much imagine Apple must have signed up some incredibly cheap chip deals elsewhere for its iPhone 5.

This being a calculated early missile strike, to pre-empt the storyline of 'Samsung forced us into it'.

So, Apple has successfully gotten the Samsung Tab 10.1 banned across Europe because it "looks and functions the same". No shit, Apple. It's a tablet PC!

The only thing Samsung could have done to make it look different would have been to make it in the shape of a circle. Also, the onboard software looks nothing like iOS.

All this means is that Apple have now realised that they have viable competition and instead of playing fairly, they are willing to get dirty.

I wonder what kicked it all off.

I guess when sales of Android rose dramatically they chose to inspect their 'war closet'. Being bigger than even Exxon helps.

Yet I half suspect Samsung turned them down with regards to Super AMOLED screens.

It seems Samsung are also making screens for the iPad 2.
What with the SOC and now the screen, the iPad is already 90% a Samsung in main hardware.

So does this secure Apple more supply in this surreal world?

I am actually furious with those spineless tits in the German courts.

Apple are definitely running scared now and after a modicum of success exploiting the weak US patent systems they have found the EU to be as equally weak. No doubt the court have recently taken on a new batch of iPad2s...allegedly.

I know nothing about technology but how come Apple have done this with the tablet but the Samsung Galaxy looks exactly the same as the Apple IPhone? Why didn't they try to get that banned ?

Or is that a really stupid question

I suppose it is difficult to patent a design fashion or a fad, and the latest fashion being a rectangular device with a large glass screen and buttons on the bottom. That is what people like right now and so firms are designing their equipment to reflect this fashion. Jobs, who is deathly scared of losing market share decided the best way is to follow Microsoft, Sco and Monster Cables and go after the competition in the courts with spurious claims. The Galaxy 10.1 is the greatest rival to the iPad so that is why it was targetted.

Yet somehow, against all odds, Motorola, HP, RIM, Toshiba, Sony, all managed to make tablets that don't resemble the iPad, other than the aforementioned screen and buttons. So it's clearly do-able.

Seems that Samsung's strategy was to copy the design of the leading brand (maybe to introduce confusion for the consumer in the marketplace?), right down to the proprietary connector (isn't Android 'open'?) and think they would get way with it.

They didn't.

Of course they all "resemble the iPad in that they have a rectangular shape and a glass screen and are coloured black. Hell, my Dell flatscreen monitor looks like an iPad. All the tablets you have mentioned utilise the same form factor and overall design, so yes, they do resemble the iPad.

In any case, the Galaxy Tab 7 looks very similar to a Galaxy S which looks similar to an iPhone, yet they are not in contention at the moment, the 10.1 model does which, to my eyes looks different enough from an iPad so that mistaking the two is not possible unless one has terrible vision.

I sort of put the whole saga down to the Super AMOLED and Apple not getting it.

If Apple's main supplier is also their main competitor it's not so easy to compete.
I suppose it always was to be a massive can of worms once Apple sales went into orbit.

We could just as easily say that all laptops consist of a flat bit with keys and a trackpad with a screen attached via a hinge at the back.

The Samsung Tab 10.1 only follows Apple's design to a point - the casing has a plastic back for example, but outwardly, from the front, they look a lot alike. [Many consumers won't even consider the difference in screen aspect or resolution. It's not on their radar, unless they actually hold an iPad or a Touchpad next to the Android equivalent for a direct comparison.]

I think the problem is for the other manufacturers - ie. how do RIM, Motorola etc differentiate themselves in the market? Very hard if you happen to make a glass screen + casing that's all black.

It's like how do you differentiate your pencil from the others? Well, to me the consumer it doesn't much matter as long as they perform their primary function.

Again from the tablet manufacturers perspective, if you can't skin Honeycomb, how do you differentiate it from every other Android tab? In this respect Apple have it easy, even if iOS is looking a bit stale by now.

As for the iPhone, the current model - the glass sandwich - has not really been copied by any other manufacturers AFAIK. The form factor, the look of the device, may have been emulated, but the actual engineering of glass meets metal in that particular way has not.

Zapod I agree entirely that is why I am dismayed and perplexed at Apple going after Samsung (and Motorola) with the claim they stole the look and feel of their own products. Your example of laptops is a perfect illustration of where this dismay is coming from.

We got one two days ago. I am having problems with Flash. Adobe Flash 10.3 (the latest) is installed, but both Facebook and the BBC web site say the wrong version is installed when I try to view a video. YouTube is OK. This is all using the standard "Browser" app installed on the Tab. If anyone has found out how to fix this can they please post the solution. Thanks.

Seems apple strike again and Samsung have taken the 7.7inch off display at a technology fair in Germany.

OK. I've solved this now. If anyone else is having the same problem, you need to go the following in the Android Browser ....

-Settings
-Advanced
-Enable plug-ins
-Always on

I find the whole thing bizarre, and don't agree with Apple's tactics at all, but...

... I would find it strange if it was because of being "deathly scared of losing market share". Apple owns the tablet market, and still has nothing to worry about (until Amazon's comes out?). The original Galaxy Tab didn't do well, the Xoom hasn't done well, the Playbook hasn't done well, and the Touchpad failed so badly it was killed off. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 may be the best Android tablet at the moment, but I wouldn't call it the "greatest rival to the iPad". It's a lovely bit of kit, but I think being priced exactly the same as the iPad 2 kills any chance it has of making a dent in the market.

Considering Samsung are the world leaders in screen technology its dead simple.
Its been done to stain their current main rival.

If Apple was getting those OLED screens ahead of Samsung themselves, things would be dinky dory.

What OLED screens? Even Samsung isn't using them yet in tablets.

Has Samsung shown any tablet sized OLED screens? Surely they'd be too expensive at the moment?

Apple was reported to be testing higher resolution IPS (not OLED) displays from both Samsung and LG for use in the next iPad, but they were both apparently unable to produce a high enough yield of usable quality units. The only other supplier capable of making the required size and resolution was Sharp, but its displays were too expensive.

Given that Apple is one of Samsung's biggest clients, and it spends billions of dollars per year on Samsung components (including a variety of components that go into the iPad 2), why would Samsung "turn them down" regarding OLED screens? Selling to Apple brings in $$$$$$$$$, plus the quantities which Apple is guaranteed to buy, and then sell on in complete devices, lead to the sort of economies of scale which mean that Samsung can save money using the same components in its own devices.

Phone screens. Including the ones Apple are suing over.

And the Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet just pre-launched is OLED.
The question is will Apple copy Samsung and buy the new LG OLED screens?
