Hopefully someone can help me here, what I have is a Samsung LE37 M87BD tv, which has a couple of HDMI ports.
One of which is used for the Sky+ box.

I bought a Sharp HT-SL50 2.1 sound bar system, and followed the instructions to set it up.
There are 4 methods in the manual to get it working and none work apart from a basic audio cable from the tv headphone socket to input on the wired sub-woofer. Unfortunately this causes a really loud hum to emit from the sound bar itself making it unusable at quiet volumes.

Why can I not get the HDMI methods to work? ie, HDMI cable from Sky box, to sub-woofer, then HDMI from sub to tv HDMI port. It'll show pictures but no sound... plug in headphone cable and the sound comes but can't change volume!

Could the tv really be too old to work with it, it's 4/5 years old now I guess?

It clearly states on the front page of the instructions that the TV requires to be CEC capable for HDMI, your set is probably too old to be (and it's not Sony or Panasonic - who were first to implement CEC - having co-developed it).

Does your TV have phono outputs for audio?, that would be a better solution, as page 12 method 2.

Or assuming you only use Sky?, connect the phono outputs from the Sky box to the sound bar - assuming it has them.

Yes, the TV has a menu option for CEC enabling, it just doesn't seem to play - are there behavioural differences between manufacturers?

That method just doesn't output any sound - very odd, I'm left with the other method on page 12, which is the headphone output, which leads me back to the humming...

Or assuming you only use Sky?, connect the phono outputs from the Sky box to the sound bar - assuming it has them.
Didn't try that method... shame though as then I presume DVD and other inputs wouldn't then pass through the sound bar?

Does the TV manual mention or does either HDMI socket have ARC written on it ? I think the Sharp HT-SL50 needs a TV that supports Audio Return Channel for this feature :

Sorry, Beer making me talk rot. You mention you've already tried this method.
The HT-SL50 doesn't have a remote for volume control does it ? so a DAC between TV optical output and woofer analogue input is out. Can you get any sound via the soundbar from just the TV connected via HDMI ?

Old thread but very relevant to me. The soundbar worked brilliantly for me for a while but lately it dosent come on every time i turn the tv on. nothing changed with the set up and the soundbar isnt a year old, I have to turn the tv on several times before sound comes out, it turns the soundbar on but no sound.

I use HDMI thru the ARC connection

I get sound thru the other connections, but the volume is high and i cannot turn the sound down thru these connection.

gutted because i like the sound the sound bar gives and today, didnt work all day until just now lol

I would be very grateful for any help

Check the digital output setting on your tv is set to PCM and not AUTO or DD.
I've noticed that with a Sharp HT-SL70 and LG tv combo the Sharp powers up when an external device ( DVD, Freeview recorder ) is switched on. The TV connection is very unreliable.
I suspect that they will only work properly with a few brands of TV as each manufacturer seems to have their own version of CEC-HDMI switching.
Ironically only the more expensive TV's in Sharp's range have the Aquos-link facility which probably works perfect with these units. However who is going to spend a lot of money on a Sharp TV just to connect a basic sub £150 soundbar with non-existent bass ?

I got a Pansonic Viera Plasma TV, top of the line and it worked perfectly fine for a month or 2, then just got tempremental from then. i can live with it, just a bit of a pain having to turn the TV on and off several times to get the bar kick started.

Thanks for the input though
