I agree with you both, Grumpy and Nigel

No doubt Amazon would like to profit too from the success of tablets, but I think Kindle is so successful because it's a device designed to do one thing best as it can. If they start hanging bells and whistles on it, it will increase the price and they may have to make compromises for the sake of all round functionality - can do a lot of things, none of them properly.

Absolutely. And that's because the two are very different products. Just because a tablet can display ebooks and has a fancy schmancy way of turning pages is immaterial to me. It isn't an ebook reader.

If they want a tablet they can create one, but if they mesh the two together it'll alienate a lot of loyal ereader users.

The other point is that the Kindle has been very successful with older people (pensioners, seniors, however you want to put it) because it's simple to use. In the same way someone mocked their father for "only wanting a phone to make phone calls", there's probably a fair sized chunk of the Kindle market who bought it because it was simple and not overly complicated. I think those customers would be scared off by a bells and whistles colour e-ink with tablet capabilities.

If Amazon are sensible (and they probably wouldn't have got where they are today by not being), they'll ADD to their Kindle range with an all singing, all dancing colour screen tablet type of thing (like B&N's NOOK Colour, which is really an Android tablet), AND they'll keep the simple B&W Kindle for people who just want an ereader.

Also, don't forget too that one of the biggest advantages of the kindle is the time between charges...

Exactly, even with wi-fi left on you're measuring weeks between charges instead of hours with a tablet.

I bow to you both

I picked up a refurb (Wi-Fi only) one from Amazon and it arrived this morning. I'm no expert but this thing look new rather than a refurb, box was still sealed, screen protector still on front and back, document and charger enclosed. So if anyone want to save £30.00 off the list price, its worth considering the refurb version

My Kindle battery DOES NOT last "weeks" with "wireless on"!

..... Tesco have knocked £10 off the wi fi only Kindle3, because it's less popular with slower sales .........

Kindle 3 very good including browser, but note:

1. It can lock up, frequently, especially if web site is complex. Best to enter URLs into Kinstant website, let that re-direct you to the mobile version, then "bookmark" the resulting URL! You can always get the full web page verison if you really want.

On one occasion, my Kindle locked up competely, and so did "restart" ! I had to use "last ditch unlock", factory restore with no keys working, which worked, but it de-registers the deivce and wipes the memory clean !

2. Whispernet exists "on top of" other wireless systems as a VPN. During busy periods, Amazon may switch you from 3G to EDGE and GPRS, which still work but are much slower.

3 Loads of entirely free books from project gutenberg & web archive texts, and - not entirely legal - novel packs u can get via torrents etc,,,,,, if a book is in mobi format the Kindle will directly download it, but PDFs need a computer then USB connect .......

.... I find it very good indeed, for all sorts of website browsing and old out of copyright books. Not so good if you want video, and latest blockbuster novels .......

few tips ...... only one browser window so no page re-direct - but you just enter the website url via KINSTANT then it DOES work .......

.... goolge translate works a treat, read mobile.lemonde.fr in English translation, & other papers etc ,,,,,,,

I bought myself a refurb WiFi Kindle last night for £79.99 on Amazon. I was going to get the 3G one, but at an extra £30 it isn't worth it [for me at least].

I always have my mobile on me, so internet access if full colour is always available. Also, in the event I should want to download books on the go I can tether my phone to the Kindle.

We tend to forget that it is the simplicity of the Kindle that has helped to make it a leading brand.

I have the basic wifi version and the only thing wrong is I read and buy more books than ever as the "shop never closes"!

The only real change I would like to see is some form of optional/adjustable backlight so I could read it in the dark.

Of course we can all do that with Ipads etc but the e-ink technology makes outside reading such a pleasure.

The lack of a light is why I bought the Amazon cover with a light built in. Now I can read in the dark with just the little light in the cover, and him indoors isn't moaning about me having the main light on because he wants to sleep.

The lack of light has never bothered me. After all, normal books don't come with lights!
