hey, I've just downloaded/watched the first episode of Dynasty, thinking i was watching Dallas (well I was too young, barely born even when they first aired and they're kind of similar).
My first impressions are it's okay-ish but how does it stack up against Dallas ?

Lol, how could you confuse the 2? Dynasty was much more showbiz-zy than DALLAS. DALLAS was about wealth, but it was also about FAMILY, Dynasty was all show, IMO.

All flash and no smash...

well if you never saw either of them. When I saw it on a.b.m I thought hey, it's that show about the oil tycoons I heard about and vaguely remember the adults watching when I was about 5, then I watched that episode, and I couldn't see the Duffy (that I remember from a sitcom in the late 90's, he was such a hoot in there, what was it called again ? There was a blonde tart with big lips). So I looked it up on the web and realised I was thinking about Dallas all along.

Die-n'sty as they call it also seems to be about family though. And there's a gay character.
Dallas from what I gather pulled a lot of stupid dream stunts and fake death announcements didn't it ?

Thanks for the link, but i can't figure out how to download any of the Dynasty episodes!

Dallas had one dream sequence where a whole season ended up being Pam's dream. Its probably from that point where Bobby was found in the shower, where the series started going downhill and people were turning off.

the episodes I was talking about, the first 3 so far are there :
alt.binaries.multimedia
if your ISP provide this newsgroup fine, otherwise you need to take up a subscription with a usenet provider such as astraweb.

I read somewhere there had been more than 1 dream sequence on Dallas.

I have tried to look on this website but can't find anything at all. I, too, am interested in buying the whole of Dynasty & Colbys on DVD or video. Let me know if you are more successful. Thank you

Dynasty's 1st season (before Joan Collin's Alexis took over) was actually really good drama, well written and well constructed. From Season 2 onward, it became more and more about shoulder-pads and bitch fights. Ironically when it was at it's unintelligent worst, around 1985, it was getting it's best viewing figures (remember the Royal Wedding Moldavia Massacre? the highest rated episode of the lot), then the numbers dropped fast, and yet more irony, the final 9th season was actually pretty darn good.

Dallas was generally stronger for the bulk of its run. Good writing, good acting. But after the Bobby Death/Dream fiasco it qyuickly lost all credibility and became a huge steaming pile of american crap.

But I would say that, as I had the biggest hots for Linda Evans, the punch-packing angel, Krystle Carrington. Woof Woof.

Dynasty:
Seasons 1-5 = Brilliant
Season 6 = OK
Season 7 = Awful
Season 8 = Better than 7
Season 9 = OK
The Reunion = Corny but OK

I like that Matt character. Interesting way of speaking.
The first 2 episodes were very well written/acted although some scenes are really cringeworthy like the one where Crystle receives all those flowers and it goes on and on and on until the delivery boys have brought them all in which lasts about 2 or 3 minutes and meanwhile there's the corniest music playing. I think it's a specialty of American soaps.
But there's some really good stuff like the son having a go at his father and the oil industry (very interesting).

I LOVED Dynasty! Great telly! Camp, daft and OTT. Great. The Colbys, too. Addictive, ludicrous and fun. UK Gold showed it ages ago, and I'd love to see it again. The wedding massacre, Fallon and the spaceship, Sammy **, Stephanie Beacham and Kate O'Mara ... marvellous!

Dallas always seemed far too sensible and serious. Far more male-dominated, with loads of stuff about business deals, etc. Dynasty had some more daft, camp and glitzy elements, and seemed more self-aware. Dallas knew it was dealing with serious business people and boardroom stuff, while Dynasty mixed in a lot more fluff.

Does Fallon get abudcted by aliens ?
I've seen 3 episodes now and it's really growing on me, I wouldn't say it's daft far from it. If you watch Dynasty and then EE, then you realise how much of joke EE is. I mean they own a couple of shops or market stalls
and they think they're the big fishes. Please ! In fact Dynasty is barely a soap, it's closer to a drama than anything else. Those were the days :
Knight Rider, McGyver, Dukes of Hazard, Dynasty, Little house on the prairie...
Anyway like I said go to alt.binaries.multimedia, and you can download the episodes from there.

Fallon was kidnapped by aliens in the last episode of The Colbys, then turned up a year-or-so later in Dynasty calling herself "Randle" and with amnesia. That;s the kind of telly I want to pay my licence fee for!

Made me chuckle that DS censors the letters J and O when they're next to each other. How rude!
