It needs to be connected to the amp so you can hear music!!!

The reason the amp is connected to the small speakers via the bass unit is so that the passive filters can ensure only the right audio frequencies are sent to eithe the bass driver or the trebble units.

??????

That makes no sense - aren't all the power amplifiers actually inside the sub-woofer, which is why all the speakers have to connect to it. I very much doubt it uses passive filters, Bose have always used electronic filters in order to try and get a reasonable sound out of cheap speakers too small for the job.

My bad! For some reason was thinking of the am5 which is a passive speaker system. The principal is still the same, using active filters. From memory can't remember if the unit acts an an amplifier (using the highiput feeds for your own amp) or if its just the audio processing that it needs a power supply for.
