The Masterpiece Society.

One of my favourite episodes.

MARTIN: We have immeasurably extended the potential of humanity, physically, psychologically. We have evolved beyond, beyond
LAFORGE: Beyond us.
MARTIN: Frankly, yes. No one in this society would be blind, for example. No offence intended.
LAFORGE: I can see you just fine, sir.
MARTIN: Yes. Well, my point was just.

EaF is the most problematic one as there's an imbalance - it comes through the FR but not FL. The rest, are at least balanced.

Apparently the 2.0 stereo track has lip-sync issues pre-credits, but is ok for the duration of the episode after the credits.
It seems there's a recall in Australia, with a re-release date of 5th September.

Is there a site where there is a direct comparison of the original DVD vs. Blu-ray remaster? As anyone who owned the videotapes of the 60's TOS knew if anything was in need of a remaster it was those, but the 80's TNG looked pretty decent on DVD.

As it sounds like there could possibly be a recall on these discs, I'm holding off on purchasing them for now.

For those who have got the discs, can you say how much has been completely replaced? I know all the model work of the Enterprise and other ships are kept, but can you tell what parts are brand new? eg. from the shots I've seen, it looks like all the planets have been completely re-done. Would this be the same for other effects work, like phasers, torpedoes, explosions, transporter effects, etc?

There's now a disc replacement programme in the US:

Presumably there will be similar programmes in the UK and other countries.

Glad I didn't bother with this now, I get stressed out about things like that easily.

It depends on whether or not you're watching on surround sound or just bog-standard TV speakers. If it's just the speakers then you're probably not going to notice anything. There's some talk of the stereo track on Haven being a bit off, but I watched that last night and didn't really notice anything. In fact, we switched from 5.1 to stereo when we encountered the oft-mentioned audio problem on the set. Seemed to be ok.

I think the only other problem with stereo is right at the beginning of Encounter at Farpoint, but again, it's fairly minor compared to the 5.1/7.1 track problem.

Digital Bits (LINK) posted something that may help resolve some of the audio problems. It appears that not everyone is affected by it:

Quote:
For those of you who may be experiencing audio sync issues with the Dolby Digital audio on the extra features on the TNG BDs, check your Blu-ray player settings. Some people are reporting problems and others aren't. It appears NOT to be a player model issue or an actual problem on the discs, but rather inconsistencies in the way people have their players setup. I've done some experiments with our demo system here at The Bits, and essentially what's happening is the more work your Blu-ray player is having to do in terms of processing the video and the audio signal, the more delay between audio and video appears when watching the extras. So if you have a very good display, set your player simply to deliver the video signal without extra processing and let your display do all the work of video processing. Conversely, if you have a high-end A/V receiver, let the receiver do all the heavy-lifting with the audio decoding. In our test system, sure enough when we overworked the player (two different models - Oppo and Panasonic) a significant audio delay appeared. When we restored the proper settings, the problem cleared up. Give that a shot and spread the word when you hear others having similar problems with audio sync on the extras. That at least is NOT a problem with the discs. I should note that setting your player settings in this manner is just a good idea in general - after all, the reason you buy high-quality displays (flat screens or projectors) and A/V receivers is that they have the extra muscle to do the work in delivering the reference video and audio quality you want.

No news on a UK replacement programme yet, however news is mean't to be imminent.

Apparently, some region B people are reporting that they've contacted the US replacement programme and are having new discs sent out from them. The discs are region-free, so that should work if you're desperate.

While watching Haven on the 2nd disc I noticed that the audio was very tinny. I switched the audio to track 2 and it was fine ( track 2 came up as french even though it was english ).

I was just using my TV's built in speakers.

UK disc replacements now active.

The following is on trekcore and sfx.co.uk

Update: Aug 8, 2012: UK Disk Replacement Service
Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) have confirmed details for a blu-ray disk replacement service for those fans who purchased the set in the UK. The full details are included below:

We have discovered an anomaly in the English 7.1 DTS Master Audio track in our Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-ray Box set. There are some episodes that inadvertently had their front channel designations incorrectly mapped, resulting in an undesired playback experience when listening to them in a 7.1 or 5.1 Surround Sound environment. In addition, we have taken this opportunity to correct a few minor issues that were found on other episodes.

We are quickly working to remedy the situation by recalling affected product and replacing it. Corrected versions can be identified by the appearance of a red Delta on the spine and will contain barcode no: 5051368241838 for ease of identification. If you purchased the box set prior to the recall, this will be replaced and will be made available free of charge. Please email stng@sonydadc.com for details regarding the replacement program. You may also call 01992 657 739 Monday-Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

We strive to provide our fans the best Blu-ray experience possible and sincerely apologise for this inconvenience.

I emailed and got the reply:

Dear Star Trek fan,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The current situation with the replacement program is as follows:-

Product purchased from Amazon or Play will be replaced by your retailer. Replacement stock is currently being manufactured and should be available after 23rd August, (exact date to be confirmed). Your retailer will automatically send replacement stock to you as soon as it is available. Faulty stock is being recalled and will need to be returned. You will contacted about the returns process in due course.
If you purchased your product elsewhere, please bear with us until further details of your replacement program are confirmed. You will also be supplied with replacement stock, once it becomes available, and will be required to return the faulty stock.

Kind regards

Sony DADC, on behalf of Paramount Home Entertainment UK

Does this mean that people will now be selling the 'faulty' versions on Ebay? If you just use 2 speakers and are not an audiophile will you actually notice anything?

You might notice the sync issues. I was only using the TV speakers and some episodes sounded like they were being played over the phone or something. Once I changed the audio stream to number 2 they were fine but would the average punter know to try that?

Hmm. In the US, according to digitalbits, the re-issue is delayed till September apparently to include a fix to an episode on disc 5.

Quote:
Now then... we've gotten word that shipments of CBS's fixed Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One Blu-rays have been pushed into early September. The reason is that it seems one of the episodes on Disc Five was found to be missing a visual effect, so that's being fixed as well. We'll let you know when shipments start hitting the mail.
I hope this UK version also includes that fix as well....

Well, its almost September. If we in the UK dont get the effect fix I doubt that they would reissue again, its not technically a fault.
