just a quick comment

Form now on I will no longer be discussing Big Brother scheulding, as I have blocked it on Digiguide, and will have no clue when its on. I take the same attitude towards X-Factor and BGT.

On to ratings considering how low everything seems, I wish I coudl bash ITV 1 for being below 3 million, but BBC 1 isnt that much better, C4 seems to have had a decent night.

Yes it coincides with me joining DS, thousands of posts later and we are here.....

Low ratings as expected for a Friday, nothing stands out, soaps deserved more.

If I may just have a little moan about 'The Killing' this week, first ad break for 4:09 mins, then 7:09 mins programme, then 4:04 mins ad break - no wonder ratings aren't stronger, still enjoying it on pvr though.

It's also because DS chops off threads earlier now. Although we have had 94k posts in 4 years, not bad going.

I agree - it's shown how low ITV have sunk over the summer where they may be pleased that a show held up above 2m!
The idea of ITV being "pleased" with something getting 2m is ridiculous! Maybe for last night's particular programme they weren't expecting much from it - after all it was the kind of show which usually has done badly in the past. But really they ought to be looking at a 3m+ Monday to Friday 9pm average during the summer, at the very least.

Next summer, there's about 4/5 weeks between the end of Euro 2012 and the start of the Olympics. My suggestion from the week after Euro 2012 ends would be:

- Mondays: burn off what could possibly be the last series of L&O: UK where it'd get c4.5m against normal competition. In the scenario that New Tricks is airing on this night, obviously they'd have to have it on another evening.
- Tuesdays: assuming 71 Degrees North gets a consistent ~3.5m on Tuesdays this Autumn (this is a big if), move it to the summer where it could get ~3m at 9pm. At 8pm, re-run Doc Martin which has aired in this slot in the past and done fine.
- Wednesdays: have 4 new episodes of Midsomer Murders in July. Instead of airing them in May pre-Euro 2012, switch them to July (c.5m) and have some repeats of another crime drama in May where they'd get 3.5m. Unusual to have new stuff in summer and repeats in late-Spring, I know, but they did have new episodes in the summer a couple years ago. Directly follow up these new episodes with repeats of Midsomer Murders in late-July/August, this would be timed exactly to begin when the Olympics are airing - should be good for 3-4m as fans of the show would be in a routine of watching it and might even mistaken the repeats to be new episodes.
- Thursdays: Police, Camera, Action/Cops with Cameras. They aired PCA in this slot last year and it got c.3.5m IIRC. Would be an improvement on how Single-Handed has done.
- Fridays: a few episodes of Live WWTBAM (~4.5m) and then repeats of a crime drama (i.e. Foyle's War etc) when Olympics begin which should be capable of 3m+.
- Saturdays: re-run five Harry Potter movies once again, 7-9.30/10pm. Could be good for ~4m, even if it doesn't do as well as that, it'd definitely rate better than the likes of Odd One In and Marriage Ref have done in those slots this year.
- Sundays: move Lewis from its April/May slot to July. The show is winding down, it could be its last series, so they could give the better April/May slot to a new drama which needs the best slots possible and have Lewis in July which would still be capable of c5.5m between 8-10pm. Like MM, directly follow these up with repeats of the show when Olympics begin. At 7pm, whatever they show probably isn't going to rate as well as The Royal/Heartbeat, but a game show like All Star Family Fortunes could maybe do okay.

Basically a low-risk strategy with no brand-new programmes airing at all. It's a boring, lazy schedule but they'd know what they'd be getting with these shows instead of doing what they did this year which was air about half a dozen brand-new programmes in the summer, all of which could have flopped and all of which actually did flop! Cost-wise, there'd effectively be about 9 more hours of new dramas in that July/August schedule than this year, but it would be balanced out by there being virtually no new dramas in June due to the Euros, and reduced costs on the Saturday night schedule by not having original programming. So all in all, they wouldn't be be spending anymore money on that schedule than this year but almost certainly be getting higher ratings than the awful ones they've had this summer, but BBC1 would still be comfortably ahead most nights, obviously especially during the Olympics.

It's a shame My Family isn't hitting 4m for its final series. I wonder how the final* episode will do.

(*Actually, the episode meant as the final episode of the series is being shown two weeks before the end of the series, but you get my point. )

I think that particular thread is extremely long - 1,000+ pages and it strains the server when people try and read it.

It *will* be put back in view one day, but split into more manageable chunks.

I like the look of that. There's no point risking new programming opposite the Olympics.

Miranda's quietly going about some excellent groundwork on Friday nights at the moment. 3.5m+ is very good indeed considering its sizeable BBC Two audience. With the critical buzz it has received in the meantime, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see it 6m+ when the new series comes around next year.

I agree that the reason My Family is getting low ratings isn't because it has been axed but more because it's the same as it's been the last few years which was the reason for it to be axed.

Heartbeat, Last of the Summer Wine & The Royal's final series were indentical to a series 3 years previous.

My Family however has lost the whole premise of the show as the family unit isn't there anymore, the kids have grown up.

On a similar note, I'll be interesting to see what they do with Outnumbered, the same fate could happen there if they keep making it when the whole point of the show has gone.

Daily Mail says that Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley won't be working Fridays anymore on Daybreak after the Rugby World Cup (not clear what will happen on Champions League nights).

Sad story really. The One Show probably wont ever hit the heights it did when Bleakley and Chiles were at the helm because, whatever you think of them, they had a chemistry on that which does not exist at 6am on the comparative disaster which has been Daybreak.
There is a moral in there somewhere...........

The press seem to making a big deal out of this, obviously so they can keep reporting the same bits of info over and over again.

They obviously didn't notice how this already happened throughout the period when Adrian did his sunday night show, and also whenever Adrian was on abroad Champions League duty it wasn't unknown for the pair to only appear 2-3 times in the week.

Not working fridays (on the same salary! shock!) isn't exactly unusual in the world of TV.

I think the problem is with Daybreak is it doesn't know whether it's a serious news based breakfast show or a lighthearted effort. It's caught between two genres, and is not fulfilling one role.

For me, ITV should've kept hold of GMTV unless they were looking to revolutionise their breakfast slot entirely by taking a Big Breakfast-esque approach to the programme and making it completely difference to Breakfast, instead of the casual spin off it appears to be.

I think tis right the press are making a big deal of thing, when you pay someone as much as those two have been paid, you expect alot better results.

As for The One Show, yes it does seem to be struggling to recapture its former glory, maybe if they had hired Matt Baker straight away it might be doing a little better.

Also in the case of Christine, she has failed to move into primetime as was hoped when she signed with ITV.

True - though a lot of people said that Chiles especially would not work at breakfast before the show even aired. The fact that Bleakeley then looked like she was obsessed with money didn't help matters at all. But logic does make you wonder...why did ITV expect people to ditch the established Breakfast for a new look GMTV on the back of a change of presenters? The One Show was doing ok, but then again it mops up the non-soap audience.

Think what the situation would be if GMTV was still continuing now.
The ratings would probably be the same, the press would be running negative stories about Kate Garraway and Penny Smith, the stories that they all hate each other behind the scenes would be continuing, the press and threads here would still be demanding that the show is axed.
