For advertisers though it's people watching the ads that count, so for commercial channels the overnights count for everything really.


I think given this summers ratings that ITV really need to look at restoring the Sunday soap hour and basically going back to what they had 3-4 years ago.

Could they not run teleshopping in difficult prime time slots during the summer months, leaving the regular and well-performing shows like Em Fm and Coro in place?

Other minor channels do this to fill the gaps. Surely that would be cheaper, and avoid having to air expensive programming when nobody is watching?

Certain people here will be predicting Red or Black at ridiculously high levels.

The important thing here is that it starts off good and then becomes a reliable banker format that can return year after year.

Remember BGT & TXF didn't launch with 10 million viewers.

If RoB can't sustain a 10m average for its 30 min "results show" next weekend, after a 12m lead in, and on the first "back to school" weekend of the autumn season, then I will eat my hat. I'm surprised they didn't launch it after TXFTNG, rather than "cold" against Doctor Who, so that will clearly be no better than 6-7m probably for the main show. But it's the results show on Saturday that will make or break it really. Perhaps ITV think the shorter results show "climax" will be more of an event, and retain viewers better and hook them in, than the earlier main show?

It then has the "Corrie crutch" for the rest of the week, along with daily planted tabloid frenzy, to give it "mo".

Let's not pretend this is going to bump along at 5-6m or less all week. Unless it is ordure of the highest magnitude, which I doubt actually, it will be a copper-bottomed hit.

Good night for C5 with the film doing well, although CBB now seems to have rested in the very low 2 millions which I wasn't expecting.

Just awful for ITV 1. They really need to rethink there summer strategy for next year in order to avoid these embarrassing plummets again. Scheduling repeats of Dic Martin and Dowtown Abbey coupled with the Harry Potter movies wouldn't have been such a bad idea.

How can you be cautious with a show like Red or Black? anyway. The range of possibilities is so massive it's pretty difficult.

Hmm. Me thinks someone is trying to over predict the success of Rec or Black? in order to make it look like a comparative flop against your ridiculously large figures. Stop hijacking the thread!

I think Red or Black could do very well, but I'm more thinking at the 8 million figure level.

DS has updated. They are reporting a slightly higher rating for The Da Vinci Code, stripping out the last 5 minutes, and also for ITV1's shows (presumably adding HD):

ITV announced at the end (after leaving the audience watching a dead 'Teller' who had 'drowned' mid act) that Penn would return with a new partner later in the year.

Obviously a joke but I think more than Teller 'died' last night. ITVs planning department may have been joining him.

And to end what has been a good show with a standing ovation for Paul Daniels and his service to British magic....

Seriously, though, I think there is a Christmas special of Penn and Teller (Deceased) in the can. Hence the promise/threat of a return. So there will be one more episode somewhere or the other.

Which ITV may well be scheduling as we speak for 2 am on December the 32nd.

Lol, though we musnt knock Paul too much. He was getting eight times as many viewers as this latest version of a magic show at his peak.

8.2% for ITV1 in primetime, quite an astonishing figure given the heavy audiences on Sundays over the decades.

Another great night for BBC2, Page Eight did well above expectatons. I think BBC2 has had a pretty good year and would have been my shout for channel of the year. Not everything has been a ratings smash but that shouldnt be expected on BBC2. Their drama ouput this year has been very good; Munich, The Shadow Line, The Night Watch, The Duchess, Glorious 39, The Hour, The Man Who Crossed Hitler among others.

As for Corrie, ratings wise it is fine.

Solid figures for BBC1 last night, though it seems like the Bank Holiday effect as well as stronger competition from BBC2 and C5 knocked down the 8pm and 9pm ratings by about 1m week-on-week. Excellent average for MOTD considering it was scheduled all the way up until 5 mins to midnight. Really strong rating for Page Eight - I suppose it benefitted from the lack of drama opposition, the BBC have been good with scheduling a lot their dramas whenever there is no drama on BBC1 (and often ITV1), but this still rated about 1m higher than I expected.

I cannot understand why ITV never pulled Joanna Lumley's repeats as soon as they saw the first week figures. I can understand them not pulling shows such as Show Me The Funny which were building up to a finale but this was just a repeat. One thing I don't get is why they don't air Family Fortunes in that Sunday 7pm slot in the summer, I reckon it could get 4m. It seems like a bit of a waste of a pretty popular programme that they're airing some episodes over the next few months of ASFF at 6pm, even though it could prop up the schedules during the summer. David Jason's show rated well below par, he did a documentary this time last year which had over 4m. I can't see Fool Us coming back for another series after that performance- I thought it had a chance before today since the Saturday ratings were better than all their other summer efforts, but that rating is shocking, and probably an indicator that a second series wouldn't work.

Holiday Hijack has struggled in recent weeks, not pulling in the sort of figures that The Hotel was managing a few months ago in that slot. Okay for Rush Hour, which must've run ITV1 close during the 9pm hour. Really good rating for the Da Vinci Code repeat- from watching CBB, DVC had been promoted quite a lot over the last week, but I doubt they were expecting its figure to be that high! Also a relief I think for C5 that CBB bounced back over 2m and rated basically the same as last Sunday. C5 beating ITV1 in the primetime shares, I don't think that's ever happened before!


I wonder when the voting for Channel of the Year was done? Was it the other night or a couple of months ago? I can see why it won if it was done a couple of months ago, because from September last year to about May/June, those months had been quite strong for ITV1. The last few months have been terrible though, both in ratings terms and output in general.

The tabloids love all things Cowell dont they. Iv noticed front page headlines on the Sun relating to the minutiae of the class of 2011 X Factor intake already. Front page-shows how desperate papers are these days chasing sales.
Though the press trail isnt always positive, perhaps unsurprisingly the Express has a gloomy article suggesting viewers have turned off since Cowell left.

so if you had it your way, all of BBC2's hit shows would move to BBC1 as soon as they get a decent rating? Why not just shut the channel down?

Cobblers. I just can't see the logic of paying what the Beeb pays for Premiership highlights and showing the Saturday and occasional midweek highlights on BBC1 but the Sunday highlights on BBC2 most of the time.

I know MOTD2 has a more informal "for the fans not casual viewers" remit and approach, but the fact is it shows highlights of many of the biggest games of the season which its bigger BBC1 brother doesn't get on Saturdays.

I'm sure the Beeb, and licence payers, would get more bang for the buck if BBC1 aired all the Premiership highlights shows. It would also help fill a problem BBC1 slot post the news on Sundays.

Creating a problem for BBC Two in the process.

Mind you, I've always thought Mock The Week would be better suited to Sunday nights.

ITV1's ratings have been bad ever since BGT finished 3 months ago, they started poor and have got progressively worse. Last night's ratings just cap off an appaling summer for the channel.

Summer is appalling for any broadcaster because the audience is a lot harder to attract and ad revenue dries up so they just give up. If you look at the summer in general, all commercial broadcasters have been in the same boat, not just ITV1. Every summer is the same.
