Anyone think ITV should schedule some special Jeremy Kyle Shows focussing on the rioters with Jeremy laying into them. (only verbally)

Channel 5 have definally missed out on some larger than normal ratings with The Wright Stuff being off air. Maybe Matthew should be recalled from his holidays, or at least Nihal to chair an edition?

Stunning figure for BBC News, and it does once again prove that during a big news story the vast majority of the audience turn to the BBC.

At least the programme is only off air for 1 week this summer and not 5 like last year, typical it would be this week though.

Kaye Adams chairs the debate next week with Matthew Wright back in the hot seat August 22nd.

Sex and the City should do well for Channel 4, they're doing well on the premiere front unlike Channel 5 who haven't shown a premiere in ages.

Interesting that ITV dedicated the whole (unless I missed anything) 6.30 news to the riots. Did BBC do the same?

BBCs coverage has been better though.

Sex and the City is hardly a premiere, even I know that.

I'm all for plonking Jeremy Kyle in the middle of the riots.

At this moment in time 9 o'clock on ITV1 is a graveyard slot.

Excellent for New Tricks yet again. The BBC Ten O'Clock News also has a superb figure. EastEnders seems a bit low share wise, as does the second Coronation Street, Emmerdale and the first Coronation Street seem fine, unlike Show Me The Funny. University Challenge did well, but the shows around it didn't really hit the heights - I think maybe BBC Two should try Only Connect after University Challenge, if BBC Four would let them poach it! A reasonably low night for Channel 4 and Channel 5 as well, though Hugh's Fish Fight did ok.

No, ITV's making a name for itself as the only commercial broadcaster in the world to not react to failing shows. The only time it's shown any kind of willing to react to low audiences in recent weeks and months was when it moved The Marriage Ref back by one hour, although even then it claimed this was planned all along.

There's actually 2 lots of Show Me the Funny planned for week commencing 20th August, on the Monday and the Thursday. Lucky us. And Joanna Lumley's Nile somehow retains its Sunday evening slot, albeit at a slightly earlier time of 6:30pm.

Do Channels 4 & 5 move flops to the graveyard? or is it more of case that those channels have such a lower range of ratings between hit and flop, then it isn't as clean cut.

Probably depends on how the run, I know Channel 5 have taken underperforming shows off air like Impossible while theyve let other flops like Candy Bar Girls stay in their slot although it was up an hour to make way for a Amy Winehouse doc. Channel 4 kind of depends how badly it's doing.

Yes. Channel 4 shifted The Event to a graveyard slot when ratings reached unacceptable levels, whilst Iron Chef UK was pulled from Channel 4 daytime after just a few weeks. Channel 5 axed a show from the schedules completely just a few months ago (Impossible) and dumped Candy Bar Girls out of primetime last week.

ITV1's approach is very unique in holding firm seemingly no matter how low their shows rate.

Years ago ITV were well known for dumping under-performing shows from their time slots after only a couple of episodes (sometimes even one) and were much criticised for it. They then changed their stance and allowed shows to complete their run despite not performing as well as they hoped - not sure what prompted that, maybe a change in management.

I do think certain shows have been rating at unacceptable levels though and nobody would object to ITV replacing them with repeats which would inevitably rate better and allow ITV to save some face.

That would start to annoy the viewers who are watching these programmes, create press stories and damage the brand of the channel.

At the moment the fact that ITV are having a poor summer is restricted to this thread and a few other places.

It should be noted that it is a wide range of programmes under performing across a wide range of genres and it won't be the same 2m watching all of them.

BBC ITV Ch 4 SKY and CH5 should devote 5 min every couple of hours to show thugs caught on CCTV and ask public to report them

Maybe bring back the Crimestoppers slot on ITV and have a Crimewatch special on BBC1

Excellent again for New Tricks. A true powerhouse in the 9pm Monday night slot which is surely benefiting from SMTF been a total disaster!! The BBC News did very well, but not much of a surprise really considering what's happening. The soaps did well. Corrie leading the pack with EE strangely struggling to hit 8m on a Monday night!

A few comments today about Eastenders relatively low performance last night. But not a surprise.

I presume the London-based soap is particularly popular in London, but this is the area where people would have been more likely to tune into the news channels.

Not surprised by that considering BBC News has been much criticised for it's overnight coverage - or lack of. I'd guess Sky benefit from a lot of late night channel hopping too - and of course a few dozen people in London have new TVs to watch too.

Awful pick up - from the outset that has been the show I believe will get axed first.

Talksport will be happy.

I think it's more down to ITV not having the shows to replace them with - they can't rejig their schedules with new shows anymore, and perhaps the traditional fillers (It's Alright on the Night etc.) aren't available to them anymore - or aren't expected to perform as well as they once did.

ITV though could have used the news to their advantage last night and put a bulletin at 9pm. It is probably worth noting though they perhaps simply don't have the content to fill extra bulletins - most rolling news coverage is telephone conversations over looped pictures, and it seems at times they're having more difficulty filming in London than they have done in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.

I see my Sky Guide is still listing the England football match in tomorrow night's ITV schedule.

Meanwhile...

I am a BBC fan and wouldn't give the Tories house-room but I have to say, I'm finding the BBC's coverage of the riots a bit sensationalist and even a little bit inciteful.
"Hey, kids, get out there and have some fun. It's great for our ratings and embarrasses the hell out of our arch-enemy David Cameron.
With little happening in London tonight, the BBC News channel was unnecessarily reshowing riot images from Hackney from last night.. And on the 10 o'clock news, Sophie Raworth and Nick Robinson can barely disguise their disappointment that they got no riots to report on tonight.

I think the media needs to tone down their coverage because it's not helping and IMO no news is good news.

Wonder if ratings will increase tonight with people staying in?
