Neighbours is in trouble. Low ratings and shares.

For comparison:
Tuesday 10th August 2010 17:30 1.3m (9.6%)
Tuesday 11th August 2009 17:30 1.21m (10.4%)

What were the lunchtime viewings on those dates? Maybe the audience is just more spread out this year?

I don't think so - there's a big news story and soap ratings were down it seems.

I imagine it will recover come September.

I am a week or so behind with Neighbours, but it seems to be going into a little bit of a bad patch story-wise: trouble in Karl and Susan's marriage. For the umpteenth time.

I don't have them as DS didn't mention them back then but they were higher as well I'm sure of it.

The officials for the lunchtime showing during the same week in 2009 were:

NEIGHBOURS (MON 1345) 0.91m
NEIGHBOURS (TUE 1345) 0.90m
NEIGHBOURS (WED 1344) 0.96m
NEIGHBOURS (THU 1344) 0.95m
NEIGHBOURS (FRI 1344) 0.88m

Thanks. It stands to reason that the 2010 figures would be higher than this year too.

It does indeed. I wish they'd get rid of the stupid "previously" and "next time" segments. That would make it more watchable in an instant.

Like many of the small channels, Sangat doesn't use BARB so we'll never know their figures. There are articles on The Guardian and Sun websites about it, and lots of Twitter activity so they've had some great publicity.

For a small channel which appears to be a Sikh religious based service, they've done a fantastic job of covering the Birmingham riots and getting footage that no-one else could. I don't think anyone has claimed that they're taking on "the big boys", or that people will keep watching when this is over.

Yeah, I particularly dislike the previews because they give away so much of the next episode!

BARB reported channels can be found here:

Sangat wasn't listed in 2010. Although it only launched last September.

Perhaps not, but I do think some have been OTT in their praise of this channel today. My experience in the half an hour or so I could muster wasn't great. Live rewinding of footage and 2 lots of the same ad break one after another, for example, did not endear me to Sangat TV. I'm sure it was a well intentioned broadcast and it certainly got people closer to the story than the BBC and Sky last night, but professional and informative it was not.

As for BARB, they probably can't afford it.

Exactly. So especially if the episode doesn't look particularly great, it's like you're giving viewers an excuse not to tune in!

Just admit it Dancc - you're worried it'll topple C5. After all, an extra 50p to the budget and they'll outspend it!

No one is saying it'll threaten anyone or it's even a professional outfit, but for such a minor channel to get a lot of publicity very quickly it would be interesting to see how that translated into viewers, though of course we'll never know.

Mildly interesting maybe but I think you'd be very disappointed if you saw the actual numbers. Twitter is just not representative mostly because it's not that hard to get a term "trending." Even offensive terms can get through, like #reasonstobeatyourgirlfriend the other week for example. I suspect last night the reason why Sangat TV ended up trending is people started talking about its rather unique coverage and then a load more asked the question "what on earth is Sangat TV?" and then that initiated the trend. It doesn't mean they were all watching it, in the same way it doesn't mean the earlier trend I mentioned sparked a load of domestic abuse! They'll have forgotten all about it by next week those fickle Twitter folk and moved onto something else...

No. If ITV had as much advertising as Sangat last night I think Ofcom would be stepping in before too long!

Sky News were using Sangat TV pictures and overlaying their own graphics but with Sangat clearly visible and being credited. Thats probably why it started trending.

Yeah, good point. I'd forgotten about that. It probably reached more people in one night on Sky News than it has in the 11 months or so it's been broadcasting on its own dedicated channel.

but repeating ads is one of things the ITV Player is famous for.

Are you that obsessed with hating ITV that you need to shoehorn in a mention during every topic?

ITV really have had a ghastly Summer. There really is no other way of putting it. Literally everything has flopped and some of the numbers have been embarrassingly low. Just horrific. Show Me The Funny and Nile should be off the schedule now and Born To Shine demoted to 6pm with a Midsomer repeat at 7pm.

Looking ahead to next Summer I'm not sure how they're going to react to the Olympics. They can't just not run anything new over the Summer due to 2 weeks of the Olympics but at the same time won't want anything clashing with it. Also Scott and Bailey begins filming in November again so won't be ready until May/June presumably again. I can't see them delaying it to the Autumn if they're filming that early so that'll probably TX in the Summer. Monroe is also filming early next year I think so that might end up in the Summer.

I think next year they should run repeats of Doc Martin on Tuesdays at 8pm and Benidorm at 9pm. Wednesdays could be new Midsomer at 8pm for a few weeks and then repeats for the rest of the Summer. Thursdays could have Monroe again as I think I'm right in saying BBC1 will only be having primetime Olympics coverage on one Thursday and even then it's football which isn't really a main event at the Olympics so I think it'd be alright there. Mondays could be decent new factual. With the factual/fact ent department only having one 9pm slot to fill they should have something good there. Scott and Bailey could take over here in mid-August once the Olympics end. Fridays could have a run of Millionaire Live at 9pm. Saturdays would just be movies (another Harry Potter season?) and You've Been Framed whilst initially Sundays could have Downton repeats at 7pm and a new 2 hour drama at 8pm before the Olympics, with the 2 hour drama entering repeat mode when the Olympics start.

It's pretty cheap stuff overall but after the diabolical Summer they've had this year I don't seer the point in them doing anything more, especially not against the Olympics.

ITV have made a relatively late change to their schedule for Wednesday 17th August. They'll be showing The Unforgettable Tommy Cooper (19.30) and repeat of Lewis (20.00), instead of Bayern Munich v. FC. Zurich which has been shifted to ITV4.
