Assuming it's the status quo for Euro 2012 you can pretty much write June off too. Indeed as rumoured it might even be worth ITV going all out for full exclusive rights, though in a way I suspect they kind of get more out of advertisers for half the matches than they would for all of them considering it's likely similar ads are broadcast in each match - so with extra matches it's more about re-enforcing the brand rather than advertising to new eyes.

As unlikely as it sounds, I wouldn't rule out Channel 4 to take make a bid on getting a few of the Euro 2012 matches. They were reportedly willing to spend something like £40 million on the F1, so they seem to have cash around to make a bid on one of the big sporting contracts.

Emmerdale's figure and share is a bit low for last night isn't it? I know it dips under 6m every now and again, but that's only an occasional occurrence. The share is under 30% too, and it's usually over 30%.

There isn't usually 1-2m viewers watching the digital News channels in primetime. Maybe that had something to do with it?

As already noted in another thread here, Spooks has been axed. Mrs Brown's Boys' series 2 is filming in September and October.

Of course we've had The Bachelor before, it had three series on BBC3, and obviously ITV ripped it off with Mr Right, which is the exact same format. Mr Right was a big old flop, The Bachelor seemed to do OK for BBC3, hence the three series. I guess the advantage for this new series is that Gavin Henson is famous, so it's about Winning A Date With Someone Famous You've Heard Of rather than Winning A Date With Just Some Guy, which was the case in the previous incarnations, and in the end the public are going to wonder why anyone would want to take part or win it.

Nobody's said that, it's just been that the Beeb's output has been better scheduled and they haven't been churning out identical programmes back to back or anchoring nights around a load of rubbish. ITV would probably have enjoyed more success this summer if they'd put one established show in amongst their Saturday night LE, if they'd showed at least one decent drama in midweek and if they hadn't put niche programming in the middle of primetime.

I don't know why everyone's slagging off Tonight's The Night, I know Barrowman is an acquired taste but it's a perfectly proficient bit of LE fluff for a Saturday night, I don't go out of my way to watch it but I was at my parents' the other week and we had it on as the least objectionable viewing and it didn't make me want to vomit or anything. If it's that easy to make a hit LE show, how come that's doing OK in the ratings (not X Factor levels, but perfectly accpetable for the time of year) and Born To Shine is stinking the place out? If it's so bad how come ITV can't do something better?

And if they do then the Channel Four board should all be fired after the umpteen years they've pleaded poverty. They're supposed to be a PSB that provides an alternative to mainstream programming, which F1 certainly is not, and neither is Euro 2012.

Thanks Bushmills. Seems like News at Ten won the night again, a very good figure for it again. Solid for the Tonight special on ITV.

Bit disappointing. I would have thought 6.5m was achievable with low rating repeat opposition. I guess it didn't have the strongest lead in.

Thought Tonight would have done better in the circumstances.

Solid enough rating for WDYTYA. Pretty much in line with how I thought it would rate. The BBC news continues its strong week as these riots rumble on. Emmerdale figure is OK but that share isn't great. The Tonight show did fine and that Lewis rating is pretty good considering how everything else has been rating on ITV1 in the last few weeks.

One has to assume that it was beating the majority of the terrestrials including ITV1 on Tuesday daytime. Figures yesterday were relatively normal, a 15-minute peak of 717k (3.0%) at 21:30, still massively above their usual shares though.

The cricket on Sky Sports by the way had 407k (4.1%) yesterday.

I know that the one show is getting a larger lead in, but still 4 million in August is preety good, especially if you look a couple of years ago on barb.

Ironic that Davina will be up against Big Brother. The ratings for both shows will be very interesting if they go head to head.

From Broadcast:

Quote:
“ITV1 is enduring one its worst summers on record after some of its new entertainment formats underperformed.

In July and early August, the flagship channel recorded an average audience of 1.2 million (14%) at all times and across all demographics, compared with 1.3 million (15%) over the same period last year.

ITV1 has also experienced audience declines during its key primetime hours of 7pm to 11pm. The channel averaged 3.5 million viewers (17%) at these times in June and early August, a sizeable decline on last year’s equivalent ratings of 3.9 million (19%).

This year’s figures are the lowest the channel has posted since at least 2006 - the earliest year for which Attentional figures are available - and some industry sources said they are likely to be among the worst on record.

The finger has been pointed at shows including The Marriage Ref, Popstar To Operastar and Born To Shine, which have all fallen well below their slot averages.

One source said single-figure shares for shows like The Marriage Ref - which fell to a low of 1.4 million (8%) - were a “disaster”.

Despite the decline, ITV1 remained the largest commercial broadcaster across all viewers in the past four weeks and was most popular with the key demographic of 16-to 34 year-olds.

ITV1 has enjoyed success in other areas as well this year, with the Britain’s Got Talent final peaking with 14.4m viewers – the highest audience of the year bar the royal wedding - and the Champions League final attracted the biggest sports audience of 2011.

An ITV spokesman said: “The summer months often see a drop in overall viewing. As we announced at our interim results, we had a strong on-screen performance for the first half of the year, with the ITV family share of viewing up 2%.

“We have launched eight of the top 10 new dramas, while ITV2 and ITV3 are the two most popular - and among the fastest-growing - digital channels.”

1 July – 8 August 2011

2008: 1.37m (17.37%)
2007: 1.46m (18.76%)
2006: 1.24m (16.80%)

ITV1 peak 7pm-11pm

What was going on in 2006, ratings that summer seem much lower than the following 4 summers.

Love Island horribly underperformed after a moderately successful Celebrity Love Island the previous year. Plus Britain's Got Talent launched in 2007.

2006 was by far ITV's worst year ever both on and off screen. Love Island bombed as Grenade said.
