Talking of Daybreak, does anyone have last week's figures for it, please? It just seems to be holding up better than usual for a holiday period but it could all be down to the riots.

Who Do You Think You Are? performed reasonably well last night. I expected it to be ever so slightly higher than that. A lot of unneeded filler before that on BBC One, but it all rated ok.

Outside the soaps and Law and Order, I think Lewis tends to be ITV's highest rating of the week. Says it all, really. The Tonight Special did ok, but should've done better considering the opposition.

Natural World performed very well for BBC Two. Newsnight is also taking advantage of the riots (or lack of, as it thankfully turned out to be last night). I'm assuming Never Mind the Buzzcocks was a repeat?

24 Hours in A&E also dipped slightly week on week; maybe due to the opposition on BBC One. I see Channel 4 are looking to extend both it and One Born Every Minute. Will both shows die of over exposure, I wonder. Exterme Parental Guidance recorded a good figure...maybe parents of the rioters watched?

Channel Five didn't have the strongest of nights, though the Cricket gave them a decent start to the evening. Considering both BBC One and (I guess) ITV1 were both below 4m in the 8pm hour I'm surprised Pickfords didn't do slightly better.

Well, even if they have the money, they shouldn't bid, this is absolutely not what Channel Four should be about. They can justify cricket as being popular among ethnic minorities, and athletics too, and the Paralympics to be an obvious example of diversity, but they should absolutely not be bidding for things like F1 and Euro 2012 which are blatantly mainstream propositions that are only being bought to bring in huge audiences. Be different if it was the Women's Euros.


They can't advertise stuff very much if it's replacing stuff at 24 hours' notice. People would have known England vs Holland was supposed to be on and if they didn't know it was on, they would presumably have checked to see what ITV was showing instead.


We always have this discussion when the BBC Press Office do this, which they do frequently, it's a typo plain and simple. Especially as ITV never change their schedules on a Bank Holiday so it's guaranteed to go up against Corrie. The other week they had John Bishop's Britain down as being an hour long, most of it is inaccurate.

Very impressed with Channel 5's marketing campaign for Celebrity Big Brother.

Ok, so they got the wrong date and the advert doesn't entirely work...

But being in Scotland I've never seen a billboard for Big Brother before and I've seen 3 in the last two days. They've also got idents and ads running on ITV now.

It's good to know that in an every changing society, some things remain consistent. Consistently crap, that is.

Whilst Channel 4 are certainly guilty of overexposing their hits, I will step in to defend them here as that isn't technically correct. 24 Hours in A&E is a 14 episode order - same as this year. One Born Every Minute is being increased by 2 episodes, but it ran for 14 weeks this year as well with 2 repeats tacked onto the end. So really there's no change.


Now you're just being Picky if you'll excuse the pun. The Removal Men might not be a huge hit, but it's been incredibly consistent across the run at the 1.1m mark. I hope Channel 5 commission more episodes because it's been one of the strongest new 8pm shows this year (admittedly that's not saying much). As for the cricket, only decent?! It rated excellently compared to both the slot average and how it was rating this time last year. It seems to have built up a strong loyal following now. Even with Channel 4 News rating high for its standards due to the riots the cricket wasn't affected at all and still finished third in its slot, which is great to see.

The kids are off school, aren't they? Even the daddy of ITV breakfast shows GMTV fell a bit at this time of year.

Still, those are some ugly numbers above. Good to see Channel 5 pushing the boat out and advertising Celebrity Big Brother on other channels but I'm dumbfounded as to why they started with Daybroke. I hope it was nice and cheap!

Since E4 and ITV2 beat Ch5 in 16-34's share yesterday its clear than not a lot of the BB audience are going to see promo's on Five.

It also makes the repeated demands made by C4 approx 2 years ago that they had to start receiving £150m per year of public money on an ongoing basis to keep functioning as they were absolutely outrageous.

Thank goodness Gordon Brown didn't give in to that demand.

And of course if he had it would have had substantial adverse consequences:

EITHER it would have come from the Licence Fee meaning the BBC would have had to make even greater cuts now,

OR it would have been additional public spending which would almost certainly have had to be reversed now but only after C4 had significantly increased its cost base in the meantime, thus requiring C4 to make deep cuts now to get back to the position it is actually now in today.

Don't worry, plenty saw them during Men in Black 2 at the weekend when Channel 5 beat ITV1 in the 16-34 demo by 1.8 share points and also in Total People between 7pm and 9pm.

Though Wednesday night is the weakest night of the week for BBC One and ITV1. Considering the lack of opposition, I would expect it to maybe perform slightly better than it has done.

If it can claim 1.1m against Waterloo Road and an England international, it would be performing very well. As it is, I'd say reasonable but could do better IMO.


I'm the master of understatement. It did do well. England have had a good day today so it'll be interesting to see if it climbs or remains steady.

I suppose they could have started advertising within the Channel 5 daytime schedule, that would be very cheap!

I was just looking at how GMTV rated in the equivalent week last year, for the same 06:00-08:30 slot. Here were those averages:

2/8/10 - 648k
3/8/10 - 712k
4/8/10 - 664k
5/8/10 - 610k
6/8/10 - 636k

Average - 654k

Looks like GMTV rated pretty badly this time last year too, for that particular week anyway. For that equivalent week, Daybreak was down -18,000/-3% vs. what GMTV had last year. That decline isn't as big as I was expecting to be honest, since we've seen heavier declines in the past between the two shows. Maybe last week's y-o-y comparison was an anomaly however.
