Incredible how popular this show is.

It's not just a case of X Factor returning. It's the fact that they're going into a period where they'll actually chase big ratings rather than simply aiming to fill the schedule with anything! I think L&O: UK is the only thing on the schedule just now which would cost £500k an hour.

I'm sure FOX/CBS/NBC/ABC have hit a record low at some point this summer. But it doesn't matter. Nobody would even report it because it's not really big news - if they're screwing up in September, then that's news. It's a bit like winning the premiership in March and then losing all 5 games in April. Sure, it's not great, but it doesn't matter that much.

If the 7.6% were actually a reflection on where ITV was at the moment, then it would be a crisis. But we all know that's not the case. So of course people are going to give some context to it.


It's very difficult to find them. Where are the new shows to replace The Apprentice or Strictly Come Dancing? The BBC are betting on talent shows again with The Voice. ITV are betting on a gameshow, Red or Black.

Of course they need to be looking for more hits. There should have been something being pushed heavily on Saturdays in January-March this year. But globally, there's a shortage of new formats. The Voice is the first in a while that has had much success.

The plus side is that they're having lots of success over the past 12 months in drama as well.


None. But it's unrealistic for ITV to expect that their in-house unit will knock out multiple hit entertainment formats, let alone do so in one summer. How many new hits have Endemol produced this summer? What about Talkback Thames?

EE bosses will not like the New Tricks ratings beating their so called flagship show. Quality will always out rate crap.

ITV do appear to struggle at this time of the year. Im not sure why they dont just go for one of their current hits which would still do its job. Bring Millionaire back and strip it across two weeks - they could build it up into a big event - and run it live. It could easily fill a gap for them (if they need to that is).

I think the time of Millionaire being a massive ratings force across several nights are long gone. I think even though the ratings are bad, it'd hurt them more if they had a poor performance like that in the Autumn.

ITV usually have a strong Autumn/Winter and in Summer they just hold on and make sure a few shows get decent ratings.

If all of those soaps weren't there to shore up their evenings they really would be tanking though.

I think even some BBC bosses are unhappy about seeing New Tricks at number 1.

lets face it US shows put alot more effort into their Fall line up than any of the UK TV channels ever has.

I think its a bit late to say Dragons Den will replace The Apprentice, that is a show that exisits in its own right now, and is IMO far better, but that isnt the point of this post.

The BBCs ratings do not seem to swing off record highs to record lows in quite the same way ITV does.


I am sure there are some new formats out there we dont yet know about, probaly because they are in non English speaking countries.

Pleasant suprised by how well Ocean's Giants did last night. Possibility that new, unimproved Millionaire won't do as well next Sunday as I thought (fear) it might.

And if I was an ITV programme boss I think my biggest disappointment this summer would not be any of the light entertainment flops, but Law & Order:UK which after a brilliant start and a very respectable performance against The Apprentice Final, has seriously underperformed against BBC1 opposition that shouldn't really have caused it any problems.

ITV1s performance was woeful yesterday.

I do understand their desire to test the water with new in-house formats from ITV Studios so I can at least understand the 8pm rating, but the show is either not getting the promotional support it requires or its just not working. Probably a bit of both, but you have to ask why Kevin Lygo is letting this stuff go out & fail.

The 7pm repeat is unfathomable. These docs get repeated on ITV3 after the original ITV1 screening so everybody who has wanted to see it already has had multiple chances.

Its also strange that Benidorm gets repeated on ITV2 not ITV1.

Overall I think it just proves that you cant launch new shows and expect them to be hits without a very well produced and executed show plus major promotion both in the press and in other advertising. ITV just dont seem to have their heart in these summer shows though.

For people asking about CBBC and CBeebies during the Olympics, from what I can make out, BBC Three's daytime hours will be provided from the DTT space normally used for BBC Parliament, so the two children's channels will be unaffected.

I'd guess if Parliament were to be recalled during the Olympics, daytime BBC Three would be lost from Freeview for a day.

It didn't offend me personally as such, whilst I obviously strongly disagree with your sentiment, I was thinking more of the hundreds of talented people who work or have worked at the channel over the years, and the many more that have worked on or starred in their programmes. I thought it was a bit of a kick in the teeth to all the hard working people behind it all to dismiss their efforts in one sweeping statement, as well as a bit daft. They might not have brought as much to the table as other broadcasters but they've made a fair contribution IMO and great content is great content wherever it comes from. And also when you said anyone who watched programmes like TOWIE was an idiot, I didn't think that was called for even though I don't watch that show. But cheers for the apology anyway, hopefully we can put it behind us and move on. Also I hope you can agree with me at least that with the money that Channel 5 are pumping into Big Brother it is quite a significant week for the broadcaster and well worthy of discussion here, I don't think it's "taking over" as you put it though as plenty of other things are being talked about.

I think it's getting to the stage where the financial situation is such that ITV1 is taking the attitude of giving up on the summer. Though if they were approaching it like that, surely it'd makle more sense to air repeats that'd rate half decently rather the current crop of weak programming their producing. I think Channel 4 and Channel 5 air more 'hits' over the summer as they're looking to take advantage of a weaker ITV1. BBC One and BBC Two tend to spread their hits across the year as they're a reliant as ITV1 on viewing figures.

I thought Law and Order: UK would perform better last night considering the lack of opposition but I guess it had a dreadful lead in. BBC One had a very strong night. As suspected, Dragon's Den was hurt by the early start but that's still a good fugure.

If we accpet that ITV is starting to give up on Summer, then why did they air Law & Order at all?

I believe the number of new dramas at 9pm this summer is identical on ITV1 and BBC1. (Both 2 per week)

so ITV isnt really doing that? or were we talking about future summers.
