I think next to impossible is a bit of an overstatement. Harder, yes, but take a look at other channel's business coverage. Guests can still be booked

It's bank earnings reporting season!!! And other key market news can still happen - for example Kraft announced it would be splitting itself into two last week

I suspect these two reasons are closer to the mark

But even still, what other network that offers similar programming doesn't do so on Fridays, and doesn't do so in Summer? Quest Means Business and World Business Today still air as normal on CNNI for example.

Cutting back may make sense, say half an hour only, using the Sky News Centre rather than the Gherkin. Perhaps renaming to say 'Business Live' which could allow the format to be altered to include pre-recorded reports. But it really doesn't do their credibility much good IMO airing a part time business show. Commited news shows don't just pack up when viewers go on holiday

Surprising if those two shows end up directly against each other though - are there schedules available yet?”

I'm assuming The X Factor will launch 1930-2100 like last year. Then Big Brother can take 2100-2200 and Bit on the Side 2200-2300.

If that happens as I suspect it will then no clash will occur. Well, unless you count Xtra Factor.

If ITV schedule TXF past 2100 then it creates problems for Channel 5, because the cricket is rooted to 1900-2000.

However, you did miss the second paragraph where I said that ITV1 would consider it too risky to ditch Emmerdale at 7pm on Monday and try something new that might not work. Yet I do agree that it was easier to take risks and show the sort of programmes even BBC Four wouldn't touch when we had the old three channel duopoly. As late as 1999 BBC Two was still showing very high brow discussion programmes between a pair of intellectuals, but as these programmes were very much niche and often very boring, they have vanished or gone to Radio 3.
Yet I suppose the other extreme favoured by channels like MTV of showing complete mind rot doesn't find that much favour either. ITV realised this and have mercifully not recommisioned anything involving Paris Hilton as the audience figures are minimal.

Totally stunned by those numbers. Obviously it was always going to be down, but I felt sure it would at least clear 3m.

Significantly it means MasterChef is now officially less popular than AGT, as that recorded a higher figure (2.86m) for its finale on Tuesday.

An amazing turnaround in the space of a year and demonstrates why the Aus market is so interesting.

Had they tried a new look to the programme that hasn't taken off or something? That's quite a drop!

Very interesting to see. Just causally viewing the figures, it does seem to have been a lot weaker this season, being outperformed on occasion by some of Seven's entertainment formats.

Do you reckon it could be a simple case of burnout? It seems incredibly drawn out, running 6 times a week for three-and-a-half months! That must take a lot of commitment from fans. Not a problem when its a national obsession, but when the hype settles it must put it at a disadvantage to AGT or DWTS which only require a couple of nights attention a week.

Nope, not as far as I'm aware. They may wish to consider that next year though!

Yeah, that sounds plausible. Perhaps as well there's an element of "seen it all before" with MC which may have put off casual viewers who are discovering the likes of AGT for the first time. It'll be very interesting to see what happens with The X Factor now after its lacklustre first season, but growth looks to be a distinct possibility especially if it can somehow tap into the buzz there is bound to be around the U.S. version.

Torchwood may not be the mega hit it was last series, but it seems the BBC/Starz collaboration was deeemed a success as they have just signed a new deal to co-produce other programmes.

From Attentional:

BBC1 - 6pm: Deadly 60 on a Mission: 3.0m (17.7%)
C4 - 9pm - Sperm Whale: Inside Natures’s Giants Special: 1.5m (6.5%) +1: 198.5k (1.3%)

Good figure for Deadly 60, was expecting that to be sub 2m.

Channel 5 seems to have had a brilliant Sunday. Beat Channel 4 in the All Day Shares and wasn't that far behind ITV1 either. Something must have rated huge for them, maybe Men in Black 2?

ITV1: 8.5%
Channel 5: 6.2% (up 41% week-on-week)
Channel 4 (inc. +1): 5.7%

And in the 16-34 demographic:

Channel 4 (inc. +1): 8.1%
Channel 5: 6.0%
ITV1: 4.2%

An absolute horror show for ITV between 7pm and 9pm. Considering its lead-in, Law and Order did respectably I guess, although 3rd in its slot probably will not please ITV.

Super figure for Countryfile no doubt benefiting from the poor opposition. This series of Dragon's Den if it remains at 4m in the overnights could become its highest rated yet.

Great rating for the film on Channel 5 as well, beating ITV1 for half of primetime.

Great job by Five, didn't expect Men In Black pass the 2m park. Would have been a perfect time to advertise the new CBB series, I didn't watch the film, but I'm sure they did advertise it quite a lot.

ITV had a horrendous night. Weird to think ITV is around 10m down from when The X Factor is on. They need it on asap, and they need Take Me Out too which always secured 5m+ on a saturday night, and almost 6m towards the end of the series. ITV probably can't wait until they are both back.

Very impressive for Countryfile!

Very good night for Channel 5. That is an exceptional rating for Men In Black 2. Countryfile and Dragons Den did very well too. ITV1 are in serious flop mode now on every night of the week apart from Lewis repeat on Wedsnesday.

at that 7pm rating for ITV1! Yes, it was a repeat, but am I right in saying apart from the Friday 9pm 'comedy hour' that's ITV1's lowest ever primetime rating?! They can't risk that being sub 1m next week!

Another awful performance from Born To Shine-very humiliating to be beaten by a film repeat on Ch5 and it does seem that ITV's best bet for next Summer is to air wall to wall film repeats at weekends. This Summer has turned out to be horrendous, after a promising start with some of the Monday factual, Scott & Bailey, The Royal & the first episode of L&O.

Definitely. There's been a lot of high rating shows on Ch5 this week to expose the advert too-the Monday film, Miami, Cowboy Builders, Neighbours & now MIB.
