She'd have to drop Million Pound Drop straight away because the two shows will be broadcast on the same night. Got To Dance auditions take place in October which could give her a heavy workload then and Biggest Loser will be filming soon if it is to air in January again. So by accepting Big Brother she could actually lose 3 shows, and I get the impression ITV are giving her work because she is no longer associated with BB. Her ITV work promptly stopped as BB began getting very negative press and resumed once BB was axed.

Well when it's done right. it's a good show. Also Bit on the Side was amusing esp the puppet of the security guard made like a pit bull. I think the show has found its natural home now and a decent host.

SM: But there's catch-up and iPlayer to come. People don't feel a need to watch Torchwood live. For drama, Live+7 is the index.
TS: Oh yes, definitely. I know that, and I know that you know I know that! It's just taken a hit against a live show. Inevitable.
SM: Inevitable, and with the change in viewing habits, irrelevant.
TS: Yes, I wonder when BARB will start publishing consolidated ratings that include everything? The Live+7 figures aren't public.
SM: Live+7 not being public is mad. iPlayer comes in TVs now. Doctor Who has 10 million viewers, not 7.5 million, and we don't say it.
TS: The press will always focus on overnights, or they have to wait a month to report. And that's not their agenda.
SM: In fairness to the press, we give them an impossibly garbled story, and several different figures over time.
TS: Yes, but it's frustrating when even Broadcast Magazine doesn't seem to understand it. Hope we explain it well in Doctor Who Magazine!

Interesting discussion, but I don't think there's much BARB can do differently compared to what they are doing now? The only thing they could do is monitor internet viewing, but that may not give a fully accurate view, as 500k watching on iPlayer may have already watched the BBC One telecast, so then you're counting the same person twice. Would you use the same panel for TV and online?

I also think that Steven Moffat should consider why only a peak of 5 million have watched Torchwood live this series. He can't say "the TV landscape is changing", millions of people still choose to watch TV dramas live and will for years to come, has he not considered that people are not watching Torchwood because its well... boring and painfully slow this series? Point taken with Doctor Who, but I'm certain there's anecdotal evidence that shows that the later it is on, the higher the consolidated figure is.

Good news for television - though I think four 10 parters would be better than 7-8 six parters, though ITV are unlikely to commission more than a six parter for a first series.


A shame nobody has picked up Packed ot the Rafters here - I think it would do good business, particularly on 5* which already has that Aussie connection.

Remakes - I don't know. Rafters is essentially a family drama, so possibly better creatively to commission a new "family" based drama than to remake an existing one.

Yes he can say the landscpe is changing. I've been watching The Hour, but have only seen 1 episode live.

Most of the tv I watch now is on catch up, Whereas a few years ago most of it was live.

I've also been watching TW at US pace. The only reason I rewatch it here live (sometimes, not always) is to coinside with Jane Epsenson's tweet commentaries if I happen to be in when its on.

The only people I know who watch a lot of live TV are those who, for various reasons don't have access to on demand or the iplayer (eg my mum who doesn't have a PC, and only has basic freeview), or who watch a lot of sport.

edit: although thinking about it I do quite often just have the TV on for 'noise' in the background, and then something might catch my eye and I might start watching.

I'm probably misquoting a figure here but as much as the landscape has changed wasn't there a report very recently (as little as a week or two ago) that stated 91% of TV was watched live.

No comment on BB's figures then Brekkie? I seem to recall you being very dismissive of it a few weeks ago, shooting down anyone who said it could perform well. In fact, you went as far as saying there was, I quote, "no chance" of the launch hitting 4m!

5.1 million for BB, that will be many more then the peak of all her other shows, so no way is it held back, it was createdand kept by it.

I'm sure thats true - but I think the thing to acknowledge would be the massive variations in the % of live viewers for different genres in different timeslots.

I suspect for a lot of your standard, filler, TV wallpaper type shows - ie. daytime - maybe 95%+ of viewing is live. I mean, who the hell would DVR This Morning or The One Show. This will push the stat you reference much higher. But for a serialised drama, especially on a smaller channel, that figure might be down to 80%, or even 70%. Which is obviously much more significant in the way we analyse ratings.

Shes only had 2 or 3 flop shows, nowhere near as many as some make out. You're right about her ITV work, but she did the odd thing for the BBC, even the BAFTAs.

I prefer to watch TV programmes "live" if possible, but sometimes it's just more conenient to catch up later on iPlayer. I haven't watched Torchwood on Thursday at 9pm once this series. I just haven't felt like it for various reasons. I've watched the last 2 episodes on Monday at 11.20 on BBC2.

I suspect in some of that 3.2m, Sky have added the figure for multiple showings of the same episode for Trollied.

It's absolutely infuriating trying to follow this show on C4 HD. Never known scheduling like it.

Next week there's a double bill on WEDNESDAY (why?!) after a two and a half week break for no apparent reason. Viewers were given no warning of this. Then it's back on Fridays the following week, at the moment, but knowing them they will change the day again by the time the next set of schedules come out. (It was supposed to be on Monday of this week but that never materialised, and they cancelled a double bill earlier in the run to accommodate a repeat of their turkey of a drama Sirens)

Viewer satisfaction at the moment is hovering just above the 0 mark. Good show but I'm losing the will to stick with it because C4 plainly don't care about me as a viewer...

The Big Brother launch far exceeded my expectations - a really fantastic performance last night.

I'm keen to see where it settles though, so the next week will be very interesting.

I'd move Big Brother out of the way of Red or Black's launch - with it inheriting the lead in from The X Factor it could be tough opposition. The problem is, if it's a 90 minute launch, 10.30pm will be a very late start time.

Great figure for Big Brother and C5. I didn't see much of it but from the bits I did see the production values seemed to be quite high. Intrigued to see how the ratings play out in the next few weeks.

But not many female presenters have a career spanning almost 20 years with no sign of slowing down and still being very much on top so she must be doing something right regardless fo your opinion.


It has to weather the storm at some point, they can't keep protecting it whenever some remote competition pops up in the schedules. But on Channel 4 when it went up against tough competition (e.g. The Apprentice, Coronation Street) it still managed to stay above 2m so that would still be a great result for Channel 5.

It'll be interesting how MPD fares not only against Big Brother but also Red or Black. I think the original format where it was stripped nightly worked but the current format which is two 90 minute episodes on Fridays and Saturdays doesn't work as well.
