When is Red or Black actually on and until?

Either Saturday 3rd to Saturday 10th or Sunday 4th to Sunday 11th - I should note either of these has not been confirmed officially by ITV.

To be fair most people underestimated it, but I'd advise you to wait to see how the show pans out before gloating.

The real question is though will C5 ever see ratings over 5m again? They've managed it only four times in 14 years and BB finals usually are lower than the launch, and with BB12 beginning the day after it's not going to get the build up CBB has.


Good point - and indeed I suspect most night out of the 23m or so watching in the peak hours the majority are simply watching TV, not watching a specific show on TV.


Yes, I agree - although it did begin to hit it's stride in the Fri/Sat slots last series. It's another C4 show though they'll allow to get mediocre ratings simply through scheduling, but it'll probably hold it's own though go sub-2m.

I still think it MIGHT be a Digiguide mistake, but that doesnt change how poorly C4 have scheulded the show this series. TV channels need to behave alot better than this with imports

Jonathan Ross is back with his new ITV1 chat show, The Jonathan Ross Show, on Saturday 3 September. His first guests will be F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, actress Sarah Jessica Parker and singer Adele, who will perform Rumour Has It from her album 21.

The new series of Richard Bacon's Beer and Pizza Club is expected to start on ITV4 in the week 24-30 September.

I'm picking at her failures apparently, well tell us her massive successes. and ask how they compare to BB, because it looks like the foremat is the only thing that gets her big ratings, which is why I mentioned a chat show tottally based on her name bombing.

Thats interesting. I think the TW BBC2 repeats are getting about 400k. I don't think that figure is included in the overall ratings for the show because its on a diff channel?

I wonder if the BBC2 viewing figures will go up on Mon due to CBB, or if people will have already caught up via iplayer or dvr etc.

I never said she was one of the biggest draws in TV. I don't think Brian is as good as Davina and I don't rate him very well as a presenter (he's doing a lot better tonight though). The ratings aren't reflective of how good the presenter is, so many tuned in to see which celebs were going in.

A format is the thing that gets good ratings on any show. If the format is bad then noone will watch. Ant & Dec are a good example, although they appear to be a big draw their Push The Button series hardly set the ratings alight because its not a very good format.

Davina's current successes include the shows shes presented in the last year which have all been given another series- Million Pound Drop, Biggest Loser, Long Lost Family and Got To Dance. None are as big as BB was at its height but almost all presenters are defined by one big show and everything else is a step down. Davina is no different, and shes also got a second huge show under her belt (Popstars The Rivals).

...and the rest. The last episode of Fringe on Sky1 got 165,775 in the overnights which consolidated to 508,000.

So only just over 30% watched live or same day timeshift.

Of course PVRs are in the majority of Sky homes and in the minority of FTA homes, so timeshifting will be skewed towards pay channels.

Happened again at 10... the announcer promoted Celeb BB and The Bachelor as coming up "later" but was cut off before announcing what was supposedly coming on now.

The continuity doesn't seem to be live tonight. Dave Wartnaby must have pre-recorded tonight's links during his shift last night and they're all playing out in the wrong order, in some cases not at all.

I can't believe they would take that risk when they had a live show in the schedule but there you go. Bit amateurish and poor from a presentation point of view.

however I agree, it is a good look for the channel, and not the only mistake its made recently.

I'm sick of two or three channels dominating the ratings all the time with mediocre shows in a lot of cases just because people are creatures of habit. It gets very boring. A strong Channel 5 is also a positive for viewers of all channels as it forces everyone to up their game.

Plus you normally get a drop-off when a show like this transfers channels. That was not evident last night, if anything it was slightly up share wise. Kevin O'Sullivan commented that he doubt it would have done much if any better on Channel 4 and I think he's right.

It was a quality production and a just reward for the impressive ad campaign over the past few weeks.

Yet you're full of praise for C5 showing a mediocre show which people tuned into because they're a creature of habit.

Tonight's show proved Big Brother is as creatively redundant on C5 as it was in it's latter years on C4 - and a flashy set can't disguise that.

I'm not gloating. I just find it curious that someone who honestly thought it had "no chance" of 4m and kept reminding us that it wouldn't rate well in the buildup would not comment on a launch rating 30% higher than that. I guess you're only going to comment when it reaches a suitably low number to fit your agenda...


I'm glad you posed it as a question rather than dressed it up as some kind of forecast people should pay attention to this time. Who knows? Nobody does. Isn't that why we're here? But there's an element of hoping it fails with you, and that just stinks IMO.

Big Brother will hopefully enable them to invest more in other areas. As I've said 8pm needs to be looked at, I think it should be a bit more varied and perhaps reduce the number of 8'O Clock Heroes shows.

Really, really impressive for BB. Where it'll go from here is anyone's guess but it's got plenty of room to fall and still settle at a strong average, and C5 have every right to gloat today. I went for 4m on the RPG but after seeing the reaction last night I knew I'd underpredicted. I didn't expect it to break 5m though.

Predictions for tonight: BB: 3.6m, The Bachelor: 1.5m

I suspect I underestimated The Bachelor on the RPG, but it does look absolutely hideous so I don't think it'll have that wide an appeal.

Looking ahead to the weekend, new X Factor has had rave reviews from the journalists who attended the press screening, and it doesn't have much competition, so it should break 10m. I don't think it'll match last year but it should still do well.

Of course it will. The percentage share was the same as the last Celebrity Big Brother which got 6.3m viewers. There will be another celebrity series in January so its got some heck of a fall if it can't crack 5m then.

People also wrote Channel 4 off after Big Brother saying they'll never get over 4m viewers again then along came Gypsy Weddings. Anything is possible and anything can happen in TV.

It wasn't a very original twist. But the switch to voting to save instead of evict is a good move. Hopefully the awful mob mentality that prevailed on C4 evictions is dead - the live shows have a much better feel already on Channel 5. I remember watching one launch show on Channel 4 where practically everyone that went in was instantly booed!

Sadly this was Channel 5's only way to break into this genre. They've tried it with their own formats and it doesn't work. Bringing over an established brand was definitely the way to go, and as Jonwo says, if it's a success it gives them greater scope to try new things and invest in new programmes.

But hopefully not stuff like The Bachelor, I've watched a few minutes and it's a car crash! But it seems to be getting two threads so I think it's going to do well unfortunately.

Big Brother was a very good episode tonight, one of the best post-launch night episodes, hope it holds up relativly well.

Have The Bachelor on but it's not grabbing my attention, i think it's downfall is that fact they chose Gavin Henson, a man who has absolutly no personality whatsoever!

The Bachelor is a trashy feel dirty watching it kind of show but it's generating a lot of buzz online and brilliantly scheduled so hard to say how it will rate. I think if it rates well they will just take it as a bonus. The most important numbers are going to be for CBB.

My predictions:

Celebrity Big Brother (Highlights 1 and Live Twist) - 2.5m
The Bachelor (1/10) - 1.7m
Bit on the Side - 0.7m

I think they should have stuck to the US format and just chose a member of the public although I get they chose Gavin. The female contestants would make most men run a mile.

Her Davina Wednesday night chat show on BBC One was a flop, but her Saturday night show, ...Having a Baby did even worse. I think it rated under 2m by the end of the run.
