the kids on born to shine are every bit as good as the acts on BGT.

im jusst not sure why you have to vote for the z list celeb- and not the kids?

Wasn't Joanna Lumley's Nile a repeat of a show that didn't rate that well first time around? I'm convinced Born To Shine is only on air to make the ratings for Popstar to Operastar look good. Yet again that could slip through the net for next summer because of the cost v ratings in comparison to other shows in the same slot.

Nasty rating for Born to Shine.

Indeed it says it all about ITV's woes that it was beaten by a four year old repeat of a long axed show.

The thing about Born To Shine is that it's been executed all wrong, it's a decent enough format I suppose but it's been done too straight and Tash Kalplinsk is a hopless choice as host, it could have been sillied up a bit. I know the proceeds go to charity but there's no need to hammer it home so much - it's like Sing If You Can where they had to stop for a long film on cancer, which was completely out of place. I know Steve Jones is a dick but something like Let's Dance shows how this kind of thing can be carried out effectively, otherwise it's just boring. I dunno if Sundays are right for this kind of show anyway.

The Lumley repeat was ridiculous, I dunno why they bothered with it. Would have been better off moving the football back half an hour.

Newsreaders should never host light entertainment shows as they are far too boring. Look at all the times we've had to suffer Sir Trevor McDonald on The National Television Awards!

I haven't got yesterday's ratings data so I'm not sure - I think you mean what did Inspector Lynley get between 9-10pm as we know L&O had 3.83m.

A bit embarrassing for ITV1, really. I know summer is of peripheral importance to them, but that line up still includes 2 hours of new programming - and not remarkably cheap programming at that. Actually, Law and Order did alright to push towards 4m, considering the absolutely stinking 2 hours that preceded it.

Dragon's Den recorded another stellar rating. I'd expected it to fall somewhat without the 6m Top Gear lead-in (although the clever/cynical repeat still caught a good number of people at 8pm). Also a very solid night for BBC One with the best Countryfile rating in a good while, and a strong performance from Men in Black for Channel 5.

Yes that should have said went head to head. I want to know if Lynley dropped or was ahead of Law & Order.

Also is New Tricks number one for the week ending July 31st?

Thanks as always, rzt.

One thing I hadn't noticed before is how young 8 out of 10 Cats, Alan Carr and Chris Moyles skew for Channel 4. I suppose that is quite predictable really, but still impressive, and explains why Channel 4 remains satisfied with the shows despite very mediocre overall numbers.

Nope, 2nd place that week with 9.34m. Coronation Street slightly ahead with 9.40m for its Monday 20.30 episode.

Thanks rzt. I wish BARB would include all of ITV's ratings in the top 30 and not keep them separate.

Not too shabby for New Tricks at all. Adding over 1m on timeshift.

And after the horror show of last night for ITV1, the latest week of official ratings brings more bad news...

w/c 25th July was officially their worst week of all-time, equalling the 13.4% set 4 weeks ago but with even lower audience reach.

Also, although Joanna Lumley's programme was a repeat, they have been promoting it rather a lot on the channel. I watch very little ITV1 but I still caught it at some point during the week.

My thanks too. Once again Torchwood is near the top on the 18-49 ratings (equal with Traffic Cops, behind only Harry Potter) and at the top for 16-44 year olds.

Yes, soaps are excluded and yes, this is not the US where it is only 18-49 viewers who seem to count BUT for those who keep writing off this season of Torchwood as a flop it is worth remembering that the BBC do not want to get the same 8 million viewers who watch New Tricks for every single programme they air - they want to get as many viewers as possible across all their output, and for that purpose Torchwood is doing very well indeed, getting young male viewers to watch original non-soap drama in a way almost nothing else (bar Doctor Who) does.

Thus it is not as simple as saying "only 4 million viewers" - borderline or even a flop. It matters which 4 million they are - and if in this case you have a programme which makes up for relative unpopularity with older viewers (whom the BBC can and do get relatively easily for lots of other programmes) by attracting tons of younger viewers (whom the BBC find it much harder to reach) then the Beeb will be well satisfied.

I've watched two ITV shows this week, Ronnie Corbett and the Community Shield, and in both instances they ran a generic trailer for Tonight both before it and during one of the ad breaks. Is that all they have to promote?

Here's a look at how the four main broadcasters did in the BARB Monthly Shares for July 2011:

BBC
BBC1: 21.1% (July 2010: 21.4%), BBC2: 6.6% (7.3%), BBC3: 1.6% (1.4%), BBC4: 0.7% (0.7%), BBC HD: 0.3% (0.5%), BBC News: 1.2% (1.0%), CBBC: 0.8% (0.7%), CBeebies: 1.4% (1.2%)
--> Total: 33.8% (July 2010: 34.3%)

ITV
ITV1: 13.7% (14.9%), ITV1+1: 0.7% (n/a), ITV2: 2.4% (2.5%), ITV3: 2.1% (2.0%), ITV4: 1.4% (1.2%), CITV: 0.4% (0.3%)
--> Total: 20.7% (July 2010: 20.9%)

Channel 4
C4: 6.9% (7.4%), E4: 2.0% (1.8%), Film4: 1.6% (1.3%), More4: 1.3% (1.1%), 4Music: 0.4% (0.3%)
--> Total: 12.2% (July 2010: 11.9%)

Channel 5
C5: 4.5% (4.4%), 5*: 0.6% (0.6%), 5USA: 1.0% (0.9%)
--> Total: 6.1% (July 2010: 5.9%)

Channel 4 (+2.5%) and Channel 5 (+3.3%) were up in terms of their market share compared to last July, whilst the BBC (-1.5%) and ITV (-1.0%) were both down. In terms of terrestrial channels, C5 (+2.2%) was the only one up y-o-y. BBC1 (-1.4%), BBC2 (-9.6%), ITV1 (-8.1%) and C4 (-6.8%) all suffered declines.

The BBC's most improved channel was BBC News (+20%) whilst BBC HD (-40%) was hurt by tough comparitive numbers due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. ITV4 (+17%) and CITV (+33%) posted strong gains from last year. Although terrestrial C4 was down y-o-y, the broadcaster as a whole experienced a lift due to strong numbers from its digital channels, especially Film 4 which was up +23% y-o-y. All of Channel 5's channels held or grew their share vs. last July, with 5USA making the most gain proportionally (+11%).
------------------------------------------
And here's a look at how the broadcasters have averaged for the first 7 months of 2011 (January to July) vs. the first 7 months of 2010:

BBC: 33.3% (Jan-July 2010: 33.0%)
ITV: 22.8% (22.5%)
CH4: 11.3% (11.1%)
CH5: 6.0% (6.0%)

So for the first 7 months of the year, all four major broadcasters are either flat or up vs. last year: BBC (+0.9%), ITV (+1.3%), CH4 (+1.8%), CH5 (+/-0%).

OFCOM Communications Market report for 2010 came out a few days ago.

As usual it contains just about every conceivable piece of data you could want about the TV industry, including overall channel ratings.

TV section starts at 97/341:

Both those shows should be pulled immediately. Time to dig out a Midsomer Murders repeat for next Sunday.

Call from offstage: Oooh, but it would cost ITV more money.

Tough. The money can easily be found from somewhere.

Even though its performing horribly, pulling Born To Shine would be very bad PR due to the charity angle. They should just stick it at 6pm instead so its out of the way.

So ITV is down 0.2% year on year and no World Cup in 2011. Can we all go back to panicking again now?

Yeah, obviously they'd need to reslot the remaining editions somewhere.

Anywhere, but primetime.

DMN - are you still doing the alternative chart for BBC2/C4/C5 show? Would be interesting to see where Dragons Den fits in.
