One of the big anomalies as usual is the time-shifting figures, which still only include seven days (BARB, I believe are addressing it in future updates).

With PVRs (Sky's at least, who have the lion's share of the market), holding dozens of hours of content there must be a lot of viewing outside the seven day window,

As I assume all the channel shares and hours of viewing are based on BARB's figures, there must be quite a high percentage missing.

If we were BARB panellists a lot of our viewing wouldn't be registered.

This year we stacked up several serials including Marchlands, Kidnap and Ransom and Injustice, to watch in a block when all the episodes were shown. We have three episodes of The Hour to watch when we have the complete series.

I'm sure we're not alone.

An absolute horror show for ITV between 7pm and 9pm. Considering its lead-in, Law and Order did respectably I guess, although 3rd in its slot probably will not please ITV.

Super figure for Countryfile no doubt benefiting from the poor opposition. This series of Dragon's Den if it remains at 4m in the overnights could become its highest rated yet.

Great rating for the film on Channel 5 as well, beating ITV1 for half of primetime.”

Looking at those figures I reckon the BBC would be more than happy to get them in Winter-certainly Countryfile is more than useful even taking into account the collapse of ITV1.
EDIT-Those Community Shield highlights seem quite poor to me.

--> Total: 33.8% (July 2010: 34.3%)

ITV
ITV1: 13.7% (14.9%), ITV1+1: 0.7% (n/a), ITV2: 2.4% (2.5%), ITV3: 2.1% (2.0%), ITV4: 1.4% (1.2%), CITV: 0.4% (0.3%)

Channel 5
C5: 4.5% (4.4%), 5*: 0.6% (0.6%), 5USA: 1.0% (0.9%)
--> Total: 6.1% (July 2010: 5.9%)

Channel 4 (+2.5%) and Channel 5 (+3.3%) were up in terms of their market share compared to last July, whilst the BBC (-1.5%) and ITV (-1.0%) were both down. In terms of terrestrial channels, C5 (+2.2%) was the only one up y-o-y. BBC1 (-1.4%), BBC2 (-9.6%), ITV1 (-8.1%) and C4 (-6.8%) all suffered declines.

The BBC's most improved channel was BBC News (+20%) whilst BBC HD (-40%) was hurt by tough comparitive numbers due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. ITV4 (+17%) and CITV (+33%) posted strong gains from last year. Although terrestrial C4 was down y-o-y, the broadcaster as a whole experienced a lift due to strong numbers from its digital channels, especially Film 4 which was up +23% y-o-y. All of Channel 5's channels held or grew their share vs. last July, with 5USA making the most gain proportionally (+11%).
------------------------------------------
And here's a look at how the broadcasters have averaged for the first 7 months of 2011 (January to July) vs. the first 7 months of 2010:

BBC: 33.3% (Jan-July 2010: 33.0%)
ITV: 22.8% (22.5%)
CH4: 11.3% (11.1%)
CH5: 6.0% (6.0%)

So for the first 7 months of the year, all four major broadcasters are either flat or up vs. last year: BBC (+0.9%), ITV (+1.3%), CH4 (+1.8%), CH5 (+/-0%).”

I know we are supposed to take into account famillies of channels these days but thats pretty dire for ITV1.

ITV shares down 6.5% today (FTSE down just under 3%)

That Communications Market report is a reminder of long term trends. Whilst the advertising market has picked up in approx the last 18 months who knows what may happen next if we have another financial crisis?

ITV remains:

- totally exposed to the advertising market.

- at risk of continued audience fragmentation - whilst the big hitters remain very strong we are seing that audiences for "general filler" can now literally completely collapse.

Also remember it could be argued that ITV1+1 has given a "one off" boost that won't be repeated and has therefore (to a degree) disguised the underlying movement this year.

ITV share price chart for last 12 months makes very interesting reading - a "game of two halves"

August 2010 - 50p
March 2011 - 90p
Now - 58p

Dragons Den continues to do well, whilst ITV continues to struggle without Syco TV holding its hand. Channel 5 I think benefiting.

ITV shares have been alot lower than 58p. but its true despite alot of talk, ITV is still very depedent on advertising, I guess it just doesnt have the guts to make something worthwhile Pay.

I said a few weeks ago that showing films on Saturday nights was probably the way to go in the summer - perhaps an option for next summer? Not sure that they could do Harry Potter again - any other options?

More repeats next summer as well, IMO. ITV should be repeating the most recent series of Downton Abbey and possibly Doc Martin in primetime slots just now ahead of their return. Even if the ratings aren't that great (and it's hard to believe they'd be worse than the current options) they have a benefit in supporting the autumn schedule which is far more important.

I decided against it because it turned into a 'displaced BBC1 programmes' chart. May redo it in a few weeks with the BBC1 programmes that were shifted over to BBC2 removed.

so tell me which shares are going up today? Looking at the heat maps on CNBC, I think you will find very very few... (except BSkyB actually!)

It could also be argued that ITV cut their programming spend this summer to match the lower ad revenue available, so there should have been a ratings decline.

Im sure they would like to-they repeat Bond to death (further than death if thats possible).Though not quite sure what the cost implications are with Potter. I reckon Potter will appear annually when all eight have been shown.

in that case I am sure ITV are looking at yesterdays ratings and congratulating each other on a job well done?

I could have sworn ITV was meant to be investing in programming it can sell on either the ITV Player or to other TV channels in the global market, rather than comissioning rubbish shows that can only fail.

It comes to something when Sing If You Can, looks like the big success of the group of new shows ITV has tried this year.

Quite a few of their own productions have been made in HD for the 40% of Sky customers who watch ITV2/3/4.

And this year they bought the HD rights for the Tour de France.

How much of ITV 2 & ITV 3 is really worth spending extra on to watch in HD?

Well a few points:

- the pay items on ITV player will be internet only and its currently a trial basis, test the water scheme supposed to start in early 2012

- something which fails in the UK will not necessarily fail elsewhere. Some of those formats may well work in other markets. Despite your preferences, UK shows only tend to work when there is a high level of cynicism and manipulation (X Factor, BB, Apprentice). There is a lot less of that in continental countries and some of these ITV formats could easily suceed there with some minor tweaking.

Ill go out on a limb and say Marraige Ref is not an example of such a show, but I guess you could have Neighbours.
