I bought some lettuce ( the one in the bag), and i get some out and cut..I make homemade burgers ( chicken ones), and now i saw that the lettuce has gone all limp and brown ..I will try and have some later ( on maybe another chicken burger), to try and use it up..But whats left i shall throw away..Does all lettuce do this though ? ..I dont buy a big one cos () i dont normally eat it, just fancied a burger with lettuce and mayo on..yum

You'd be better off buying a nice crisp iceberg for a burger. Cut off what you need and re-wrap and it sould keep for at least a couple of days in the fridge. Even if you do end up throwing the rest away it'll probably still be cheaper than those bagged ones that always seem limp to me anyway. Alternatively, many supermarkets sell 'living' lettuce these days which, if looked after properly, will keep for several days.

Next year you could try growing your own in a container. They're dead easy.

I find that litle gem lettuce last quite well and it's small to begin with! Just take off the leaves when you need them.

Iceberg lettuce will sit happily for a week or two wrapped up in the crisper draw although you will have to peel slice the outside layers that have started to turn.

The only bags of lettuce I buy is Watercress/Rocket and they last about 5 days after opening. Give them a good wash in ice cold water to refresh them.

An ice bath will always bring a limp lettuce to life. Not a decaying one, but a limp one will bounce back in minutes. Rocket's not so easy though.

I tend to find cos/romaine is a very good keeper in the salad drawer.

I would also suggest romaine - keeps really well and more flavour than iceberg.

Little gems are lovely cooked - braised in the oven with a tomato, anchovy and cream sauce. Yum.

I noticed the bags of lettuce never lasted long so I've started buying little gems instead which seem to last a bit longer so i do n't feel like I've wasted too much if I have to throw some away.
