Making the big switch from Sky+ HD to FreeSat+ HD advice please

Hey Everyone,

I'm about to pull the plug on my SKY subscription and make the switch to Freesat, I've looking around at reviews of different Freesat+ HD boxes but I would like some feedback from people.

The Two Boxes I've been looking at are

the Humax 500GB Digital Set Top Box

Samsung SMT-S7800/XU

I've read about bugs with the Humax box but cant find too much about the Samsung box, can anyone shed some light on which box I should go for

Cheers

T.P.

If you wish to save some of the recordings to watch on your PC it has to be the Humax.

Otherwise the Samsung IMHO just slightly wins out over the Humax.

But I am sure you will get good service out of whichever one you go for.

I'm in the exact same boat. Looking to ditch Sky+ and can't decide between the 2 Freesat+ boxes available. I was hoping someone might bring out a box with an RF output so I can use a magic-eye in another room like I do for sky but it seems this isn't possible yet without the need for additional equipment.

Any info/advice on which box is the better is welcome here too

I record lots in HD and am sitting at 40% full on 900Gig (upgraded to 1TB and amusing 100GB for photo/music backup storage.

My original 320GB would be overflowing.

With 4 adults in the house our 500GB is always running at 90% +, we like to record a chunk of a series then sit and watch 3 or 4 episodes in an evening

Don't forget the Echostar HDS-600RS, I've recently switched from the Humax to this and in my opinion it is far better than the Humax. It is more pricey but for me the Sling function more than compensates for that.

I got the Samsung box from Richer Sounds recently. My first freesat box and it is fantastic. Only issue for me is the long start up time but I am already getting used to it.

I would have made the same switch, but I believe you can't copy the recordings off easily (I use PC to connectto the Humax and directly convert films I like to MPEG4 with Handbrake and put them on my NAS). The Echostar streaming capabilities sound great but I'm sure I'd run out of disk space.

+1 to the list of boxes mentioned above, Echostar, Humax, Samsung.

No you are correct, there is no mechanism for this. It may come in the future but you'd be a fool to buy a box based on what might be added in the future.

I switched from Sky+ to the Humax HD a year ago and have not regretted it for one minute. Once over the initial getting used to it period it al becomes natural and has never missed a beat. Have recommended it to family and friend who are also equally happy.
