talkSPORT have released more details about their coverage of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, courtesy of Radio Today:

talkSPORT unveil Rugby World Cup plan

National radio station talkSPORT is gearing up for this year’s 2011 Rugby Union World Cup which it has exclusive rights for to broadcast commentary of every game live.

Heading up coverage from New Zealand will be commentator John Taylor, with analysis from players including ex-England hooker Brian Moore and former Australia winger David Campese.

Moore, who won 64 caps for England and qualified as a referee during his career, said: “The Rugby World Cup is a massive event and is sure to be a fantastic spectacle – I can’t wait to go out there with the talkSPORT team in New Zealand.”

Campese added: “I’m delighted to be working with talkSPORT on the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand after being involved on the station for the last tournament. For a commercial sports station this is a huge event and talkSPORT ticks all the boxes – I look forward to being a part of it.”

John Taylor, the voice of the Rugby World Cup, who described Jonny Wilkinson’s winning drop goal in the 2003 final to millions of viewers and was part of the only British and Irish Lions team to win in New Zealand in 1971, will be talkSPORT’s lead commentator, beginning with the opening match between the hosts and Tonga.

Each home nation will be represented by a different pundit – Phil Vickery, who led England to the final of the rugby World Cup and won in 2003, will offer English insights; Gavin Hastings, former Scotland captain, will bring a Scottish perspective; Scott Quinnell, ex-Wales back-row forward will provide expert analysis on Wales; and Paul Wallace, former Ireland and Lions prop, will examine the tournament from an Irish point of view. There’ll also be a reporter with exclusive access to each home nation team bringing interviews and news to air as the battle to lift the trophy unfolds.

Moz Dee, Programme Director for talkSPORT, said: “Not only is this the first time that a commercial station has had the exclusive rights to a major international sporting event, but it’s also the first time that live commentary of every single game will be available from any one radio station. We’re delighted to welcome talent like this as it is sure to be an amazing World Cup and our coverage will further cement talkSPORT as the destination for sport fans.”

interesting that they seem to only be using one commentator for some games (perhaps because they aren't intending full coverage of them) though that would surely be surprising given that one of those games is Ireland's game with the USA.

looking forward to hearing John Taylor again who I enjoyed on his previous commentary outings with the station.

I think the one commentator listings could be because the information about the station's main commentator (as opposed to co-commentator) has yet to be released. It's been trailed that talkSPORT are doing commentary on every game of the tournament, although whether some of them will be DAB-only jobs remains to be seen.

Thank you for posting the scheduling and commentary details 4-4-2. As I'd expected, it seems as if Mike Bovill will be presenting the early shift of their coverage on weekend matchdays with Mark Saggers taking over for the latter part going out in his usual Weekend Sports Breakfast slot.

Interesting to see that John Taylor and Brian Moore appear to be talkSPORT's main commentary team, including for the first England game (I wonder if they will be joined by Gavin Hastings for England v Scotland?). I'm slightly surprised to see Moore's name down for Wales v South Africa though, I'd thought they would be using a Welsh co-commentator namely Michael Owen for Wales games. Perhaps that's a typo on the schedulers part, then again David Campese is down to do Ireland v USA rather than Paul Wallace. We'll see.

Like Swansea Steve, I'm looking forward to hearing John Taylor's commentaries. I think he is a fantastic broadcaster with a strong radio voice and have enjoyed his contributions to Full Contact and the other RWC preview programmes on talkSPORT in the run up to the tournament.

In other news, judging by some of Mike Bovill's posts on Twitter it seems that Sirius XM in the United States will be carrying talkSPORT's Rugby World Cup coverage as part of their agreement to broadcast selected shows from the station on the satellite radio platform.

Correct - there are two commentators but I'm not sure who'll be alongside the summariser just yet.

From The Drum:

talkSPORT to be broadcast to British troops stationed overseas

talkSPORT commentary on the Rugby World Cup 2011 is to be broadcast to British soldiers serving overseas, the British Forces Broadcasting Service has announced.

Coverage commences on September 9 and will enable troops stationed in more than 20 countries; including Afghanistan, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands, to keep up to date with all the games as they are played.

England legend Brian Moore, aka The Pit Bull, will be heading up talkSPORT's coverage for the tournament alongside David Campese. He said: “The Rugby World Cup is a massive event and is sure to be a fantastic spectacle – I’m really pleased to be supporting our brave troops abroad.”

BFBS Controller Nicky Ness said: “I am delighted that the BFBS and talkSPORT partnership now extends to Rugby World Cup coverage. This tournament is really important to the armed forces community for whom sport is crucial part of life.

The fact that our troops will be able to listen on the front line and in far flung corners of the world will make a real difference to morale.

I notice the midweek matches not involving 6 nations teams played at 8am are described as "extended coverage of Tonga v Conga" etc.

That seems to differ to what Moz says above " live commentary for every single game" bet these games get stuck on the website so it doesn`t look like like he`s telling porkies

Fair play to TS they are promo the cup big style - pieces in every sports bulletin, asking every guest if they are looiking forward to it. My bet is that as soon as its over it will be back to talk premier league 24/7, unless of course England win when it will all be because of TS coverage

Rupert covered the Six Nations for talkSPORT throughout the early-mid 2000s and was their main reporter on the 2003 Rugby World Cup, including the final. He's very much an all-rounder, he has also commentated on numerous Open Golf Championships and covered tennis, horse racing and the odd football match for the station.

It seems that talkSPORT are rewarding the loyalty of some of the people involved in their rugby union coverage from years gone by when they only had reporting rights to the big matches, not only Bell but Mike Bovill (who has excelled as the host of Full Contact), Jeff Probyn, Andrew McKenna, John Taylor and Chris Sheasby. I think it is refreshing that they are willing to promote deserving people from within rather than taking the approach of bringing in a whole team of new voices.

maybe good to reward but can't help thinking it sounds pretty poor and lightweight. should have tried to excploit their links with sky to nick some of their people for 6 weeks. Full contact has always sounds rather odd, Not sure it'll be worth listening to.

I totally disagree. Rupert Bell has always done well on talkSPORT regardless of the sport he's been covering, I think he'll prove to be a safe pair of hands.

I think beyond John Taylor they were always going to have a problem signing up supplementary commentators, as simply there's not that many experienced rugby union commentators available. A couple of the top ones with some history at talkSPORT - Simon Ward and Martin Gillingham - are working for ITV, while Sky Sports lead commentator Miles Harrison, who was part of their 2003 RWC team, is commentating for Sky Sport New Zealand. From the rest of the Sky team, Will Chignell's now working for the RFU and Bob Symonds is commentating for ITV. Most of the BBC TV and radio guys will either be reporting on the tournament for a BBC station or covering another sport for the Beeb. Former BBC man Nick Mullins is ITV's main commentator and Andrew Cotter will be covering his ESPN work in his absence.

Not sure what you think sounds odd about Full Contact, it's consistently an excellent programme IMO. Your comments sound very harsh and unfair to me.

Thanks for posting the further schedules 4-4-2 - could RH be Russell Hargreaves or Roger Hughes?

Good to hear that BFBS are taking talkSPORT's Rugby World Cup coverage. BFBS 2 must be coming close to becoming a relay of talkSPORT at weekends, what with them carrying their Premier League commentaries as well!

They don't have any links with Sky, only commercial sponsorship arrangements. The IRN bulletins are produced by Sky News, as they are on all commercial stations.

Do you think that Keys & Gray would be on there if Sky had any influence?

Rupert Bell was a commentator on Radio Wimbledon this year - he is an all-rounder.

I'm disappointed Will Carling is not part of the team. He brought a touch of humour to the previous Rugby shows on TS.

JA is John Anderson.

So that makes the commentary team of:

John Taylor, Rupert Bell, Roger Hughes and John Anderson.

There could be someone with the initials RP unless that's a mistake and it was meant to be Rupert Bell or Roger Hughes.

Thanks for posting those details. I take it John Anderson is the same guy talkSPORT use as their England football correspondent?

Also, do you where Nick Heath fits into talkSPORT's plans? Will he be one of their commentators as well? If so, that makes six lead commentators - although if so it seems likely that some of them will only do games from the group stage where talkSPORT's team will be stretched.

I've heard a trailer advertising Sunday's South Africa v Wales game which says that commentary will come from John Taylor, Brian Moore and Scott Quinnell. I don't know whether that means they'll be a three man team or if it'll just be a case of Quinnell being the pundit who makes occasional comments during the match.

I also heard a specific trailer for Ireland v USA earler in the day which says Rupert Bell and Jeff Probyn will be commentating on that one, which would go against the schedule 4-4-2 posted. Those two are doing Scotland v Romania on Saturday though, with Taylor and Moore doing England v Argentina later that day and Taylor and David Campese confirmed for New Zealand v Tonga tomorrow.

At the moment, talkSPORT are airing a Rugby World Cup Preview show. It's being presented by Mark Saggers who's joined in Auckland by John Taylor and David Campese with Brian Moore and Phil Vickery in Dunedin. Andrew McKenna (with England in Dunedin), Stuart Cameron (with Scotland in Invercargill), Roger Hughes (with Wales in Wellington) and David Brady (with Ireland in Queenstown) will all be heard during the second hour.

talkSPORT's coverage from Eden Park started at 9am and will finish at 1pm, meaning there is a lengthy post-match period which has included punditry spots from Brian Moore in Dunedin from 11.30am, Michael Owen in Wellington after 12noon and previews on all of the home nation's opening games during the final hour.

Matt Smith has been producing their coverage from Eden Park, and as a prolific Twitter user, he's posted lots of photos from Auckland onto his account.

ITV's studio team are based in London, so I imagine Sean Fitzpatrick and Austin Healey's involvement in talkSPORT's coverage will amount to them contributing to programmes away from the live broadcasts itself. Phil Vickery's co-commentating for ITV so we should hear a bit more from him, perhaps doing pre-match and post-game punditry live from the grounds he's covering for TV.

talkSPORT commentator and Wales correspondent Roger Hughes is doing a diary for Wales and West Media Ltd. Here's the first part and links to his further articles.

Jeez, the coverage isn't great is it? I mean, for Christ's sake, I know it's exclusive. Stop telling me every five freaking minutes. Also, stop telling me the schedule every five freaking minutes. i know what games are coming up, I don't have the memory of a fish.

And the commentary... well... John Taylor really wasn't very good. He did the drama of England's 2003 win absolutely no justice on ITV back then, and spent most of today telling me that I was listening to talkSPORT with John Taylor and David Campese. Yes John, I KNOW!!!!!

At least the saving grace is Brian Moore.
