I have beenn looking at tablets and I have seen two in the Argos book. I dont fancy and ipad but have seen the HP TouchPad WiFi - 16GB which dose look good.
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...hTerms=5086043
and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB Wi-Fi
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...hTerms=5086074 that also looks ok. For £90 more you can get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with wi-fi as well as 3g.
I was just wondering what one of the two you think would be the best one to go for. Im tempted at the HP one but im not sure. I also take it both come with apps for eg. Weather, News, Facebook and and can also be used with windows live messenger.
I would maybe be waiting to after christmas to buy. Just to see if they go down in price a little in a January sale.

I think it dose.
Just wanted to know what the best one of the two was that I posted above.
I do like the look of the HP.
Also as I have posted it would be after Christmas I would be buying as i just want to see if prices come down a little in the end of year/January sale before I buy.

I think that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has had better reviews than the TouchPad.

You might have to wait for the Samsung.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14470253

Or go the Netherlands to get one.

IMO of the 2 you're looking at the Samsung is by far the better, you may also want to consider the Asus Transformer, which is discussed along with the Motorola Xoom and Samsung here.

As to whether you need 3G or not, only you can know that, the tablet I have is Wifi only but I have a 3 Mifi modem that I use for when Wifi is unavailable.

It is also rumoured that a new Asus Transformer may be out by the year end with a faster processor.

In any event I think you would be better off getting an Android tablet with access to many many apps.

Does the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 really have wi-fi as well as 3G. Also does the MiFi modem work withe Samsung straight out off the box or, have you got to root it 1st??

If you want lots of compatible apps, then you're more likely to find them for the Samsung. Android Market has a much larger selection than HP's App Catalog, and even if you weed out the stuff that doesn't support the Galaxy Tab 10" resolution, you'll still get more.

No more proprietary than iOS.

In fact probably less than; webOS is a proper Linux distribution, which has resulted in the apps written for the prior versions running on other Linux devices like the Nokia N900.

The Samsung has no SD card slot, if that is important to you.

I'm waiting to see if Samsung are gonna bring out a new 7-inch Android tablet. I really fancy a smaller more pocketable device, but bigger than a phone.

Any device that has wi-fi can use a Mi-fi (mobile wi-fi) modem, as it is just seen as any other wi-fi router or hotspot.
(and yes, the Samsung will have wi-fi)

The plug-in mobile 3g dongles are a different matter, and may or may not work with any bit of kit, and may or may not need rooting. You'd need to do more research. But you don't need those if you have 3g built-in anyway.

There is a review here with more information,

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...-tablet-review

Yes to bluetooth and facebook. Web sites should be OK.

Where is really fails is HP store I suspect. Couple of thousand apps for HP compared (most not tablet optimised) to over 200,000 for android and over 400,000 for ipad.

The thing that is always important is apps/games and upgrades.

The hardware can dazzle but software is far more important.

So the HP tablet is one I would avoid just for that reason, it will never come close to Apple/Android.

Tablets are overrated anyway, a good netbook is more use.

If a person must have a tablet then try the Archos 70IT 8GB 7" screen. WiFi/Bluetooth (No 3g though).

It's capacitive screen, 1GHz speed and is fast and handy. About £180 at Amazon.

For you maybe, I have a tablet (£120 10" cheap chinese, android 2.2), a netbook and two laptops and I am finding myself reaching more and more for the tablet for day to day use.

Tablets are great for presentations.

The Advent Vega has a HDMI port so you can show things on a LCD TV with a HDMI input or you can just use the pad if it is one to one.

Did you forget to add IMO?

For leisure travel - using it on holiday to surf the web, email, online banking, music, movies, iPlayer, I prefer to use the tablet over a laptop. It's smaller, lighter and less hassle at airport security than the laptop.

If you want more reviews than you can shake a stick at, try http://www.otest.co.uk/computer-hard...ablet-pcs.html

Both tablets have fantastic reviews overall. Most of the ones I've read say that the HP is fantastic when it comes to usability, the operating system is user-friendly and the hardware is awesome, but the problem, as other posters have already said, is the software. WebOS simply can't stand up to Android when it comes to the amount of apps available, and that's the dealbreaker for most people. What's worse, if it bombs and HP decides to step out of the tablet market, you might be left with a dead-end, unupgradeable shiny paperweight.

So for futureproofing and versatility, I'd say go for the Samsung. Besides, the HP might be a bit nicer, but that doesn't mean the Samsung is ugly at all!

Same here.

Used to have a compaq with a dual core Athlon but I gave that to my dad when 3 sent me my shiny Galaxy Tab 7". Never looked back.

The TouchPad supports Flash, so needs less apps due to that - You can effectively view web pages the way they are intended to be viewed, rather than have loads of apps for each specific company / website.

Apple do have loads of apps on their 'store', but half of them are fart machines.

What's flash got to do with it? You can't replace useful applications with flash. You might get a few extra flash games with it, but that's it. A lot of Android tablets can do flash too. It's only the iPad that excludes it and I didn't mention that at all!

It's also worth considering the news stories that are hitting from the U.S. today that say Best Buy has an enormous overstock of the HP Touchpad. According to all those stories it's hardly sold any of the stock. If that's the case, wait to see some much larger price drops before the year is out.

I have a HP touchpad and love it! The APP Store may not be as large as apples but it has more tablet designed apps (over 300) than available for android honeycomb (around 200). Source: http://androidforums.com/general-tab...apps-list.html and http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2387999,00.aspAll the major apps are there in the HP App Catalog. More and more daily. The touchpad also allows wireless charging through the touchstone stand so you just place on and it charges automatically which also launches exibition mode. Exibition mode can display facebook updates/pictures/ calander appointments. More can be downloaded via the app catalog.

What's Flash got to do with it? Simple: web browsing! There are a lot of websites built on Flash or which use Flash functionality for menus, videos, music players, etc (think Grooveshark, Last.fm, etc), which you wouldn't be able to access on a tablet without Flash support.

Some of those websites have "app" versions in order to get around this restriction, but a) not every website you come across will be available as an app, and b) as laurenma2 says, if you have Flash support then you don't need these apps, since you can simply browse the website normally.

So yeah, I personally think Flash is a pretty important factor to consider (your mileage may vary, of course!). But since, as you say, most Android tablets support it, there shouldn't be a problem in that respect.

LG have just launched a new tablet and Sony are launching two next month (one of which will fold in half) so, despite Apple's attempts, there will be plenty of choice soon.

Both LG and Sony's products run Honeycomb.
