I agree, it's one of the things we have to learn in life, that we are somewhere on a chain of command - line management they call it in some workplaces - and that sometimes we have to toe the line.
As you say he's worked before, he knows this. It's been easy for John to just do what he wants when he wants as his circumstances have enabled this, but I'm sure he knows that if he were to work - in any job - there would be things he needed to do and people he'd have to listen to.
I guess if it were a job he really wanted, he'd do just that. It's easier to rail against something if you heart isn't in it whole-heartedly, and so the talk about him being difficult to work with indicates he wasn't really happy with what he was doing. If you want to keep a job, you go along with it, if you aren't that bothered, it's easier to be difficult.
edit: to put it in a BB context, he did all that BB asked him to do task-wise, but got more stroppy about it as he became less content with the whole game.
