I have the original desire not upgraded to Gingerbread.
Problem 1: About once per day my phone freezes with the lights on at the bottom but a black screen. Removing the battery restores it but is there another way to reset it?
Problem 2: I have SwiftkeyX installed as default keyboard. However today the original keyboard has re-appeared but according to settings, Swiftkey is still default. How and why? I want Swiftkey back!

Prob1 - removing the battery is the only way, if you upgrade, there is a restart option, but whether you could select it in your scenario is another matter.
Sounds like an iffy apk Have you loaded non market apps on?

Prob2 - You could try deselecting and then selecting SwiftkeyX or uninstall/ reinstall it

You might also put Malkovich on ignore as they have nothing constructive to say.

About the blackout, mine does this when it is on lowest setting of brightness, could it be this? You could try going into display settings and checking.
I would be curious to know if this works, good luck.

to fix the keyboard issue. Go a text inpuit screen such as a new message. Press and hold where the text appears when you type. You should get a popup with the option to "select input". Tap it and you will get a choice of keyboards.

No it's definitely not this as I always have it quite bright. When it blacks out the home and other buttons don't work either. It's completely frozen. I just thought there might be a reset feature as I am fed up with taking the battery out. However, touch wood, it's behaved itself fo a few days now.
