Blackberry advice when abroad please!

Hi all,

I have a Blackberry 8900 on Orange. I am going to Italy for a week and do not want to incur any big or hidden charges.

Apologies in advance if this is basic, but I am new to BB- I did try to call Orange to find out but gave up after 15 minutes on hold!

I know all about call charges and roaming when abroad but my questions are-

1) do you get charged for receiving/ sending new emails
2) do you get charged for reading your email history
3) assuming you do get charged for emails when abroad, how can I turn this function off, and just have my phone for calls/ texts.

Part of the reason for me asking is that I get LOADS of emails sent to me on a daily basis, email bulletins etc and do not want to come home to find I've been charged just for receiving things which will have no importance whilst I am away.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

I am probably talking out of my hat, as I have only experience of android handsets, but assuming your BB receives emails via wi-fi it should not accrue any charges whatsoever as long as you are connected to a wireless access point such as those in a hotel or a cafe or coffee shop. Using your 3g connection will accrue charges as it is network roaming. We always advise our staff to switch to wi-fi wherever possible when travelling abroad.

Thanks Dai- The problem I will have is that I want my phone to be on for calls and texts etc and where we are going there may be very limited wifi anyway.

Ah, got you. On android you can turn off 3g. I did some checking and yes, this can also be done on your Curve

Manage connections
mobile network options
network options
Data services = off.

Don't have a Curve in front of me so sorry if I got that wrong.

Thank you for your help Dai, much appreciated.

Ha ha- I feel slightly less confident in your answer now, although what you have said seems to make sense!

Either way, thank you for taking the time to reply, it's appreciated.

Don't forget to switch off Data Roaming whilst in Italy.

Ive no expeiriencewith blackberrys, but ive just been abroad with an android phone..
and as it is unlocked, i bought a vodafone pay as you go sim card in the UK, they charge £2 per day for data use, and allow you to use 25mb of data per day which was more than enough for basic web surfing/emails and even sending some photos, i typiclaly used between 12-20mb per day.

A PAYG sim also means that you cant spend any more than what you put into it, so there is no risk of a nasty bill upon arrival in the UK.
My old non data capable phone had my contract sim incase i needed to call anyone/receiving calls.
