iP4 or SGS2?
unklesam
12-08-2011
I got a Galaxy S2 from Phones4U, Didn't really like the handset so phoned to cancel, they made me an offer, if I keep the SGS2 I can get it for £25pm handset is free, I said I liked the iP4 they said they could do me that for £30pm handset free.

So I can't decide, I know the SGS2 is the latest technology but I can't really put my finger in what I don't like about it, the iP4 I am used to after having a 3GS though its older tech now.

Can't decide

Your reasons for disliking the SGS2 are, frankly, stupid. That said, it's not worth staying with a phone you don't like for 18/24 months for the sake of £5/month, so it's probably worth the switch.

Thing I don't get about the SGS2 is all the tech journos make out its the best thing since sliced bread then you see posts like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1214816 and the net is full of them, weak WiFi and GPS seem to be the main issues.

I have an GSII, and I can honestly say there are no issues with my handset. It eats it's way through everything I throw at it and not once has it crashed or even showed a hint of lag.

GPS, Wifi & Bluetooth well Wifi and Bluetooth on the handset has picked up some names I've never seen on our computers but hey ho, take from it what you will. I've never used the GPS or maps so can't comment on it.

You seem intent on an iPhone so I get whatever will make you happy. As far as I'm concerned though they are a world apart.

GPS can be an issue on any phone as for some reason the servers are always set to the US.

Download FasterFix from the market and set it to the UK. I get a lock within 3 seconds.

But to be honest, changing it to an iphone 4 is frankly stupidity.

If the OP didn't like it then he shouldn't have it....Personally I don't have the issues he is quoting, that said, neither did he, he just read about it.
to call someone 'stupid' for choosing any particular phone doesn't exactly fill anyone with confidence that the rest of the post is worth reading.
I like my SGS2 and I liked my iPhone the choice to change was based on just that, wanting a change. I now prefer the SGS2 but, that's what it is, a personal preference....

No-one said he was stupid. I said his reasons were stupid, having read them in another thread. One of them was that the phone was too big (it's not hard to look up dimensions on the web, and compare them to dimensions of an existing device), and another was that the phone was too slippery. Another was that the icons are rubbish. IMO these are stupid reasons to dislike a phone, but as I've said if they aggravate the OP as much as they seem to, then £5/mth extra is not a huge amount to pay for a phone he will like more.

If you're used to an iPhone and you like the OS interface etc and you're not getting on with the Galaxy S 2, then you may as well change, but if I were in your position, I'd send the S2 back, keep your old phone for another month or so and then go for the next gen iPhone. Everyone seems to think it's coming September or October.

If you're going to lock yourself into another 18 month+ contract, you may as well have the newest version of the phone!

I think I made up my mind to soon, the more I use the SGS2 the more I love it, while WiFi might drop I think its displaying incorrectly, it never actually drops the connection, the GPS issue is a bit worrying, in the house it is miles off and when I say miles I mean 30 odd miles which makes me think it doesn't use WiFi to triangulate my position unlike the iPhone. When I used it in the car it took about 1 min then it zoomed in perfectly to my position I presume using the GPS satellite, I supposed this means any photos I take at home geolocation is gonna be badly off.

But £25/26 for the best phone on the market is a pretty decent deal I think, when the IP5 comes out its guaranteed to be at least free @£45pm if not more

I've just swapped from an iPhone to a Galaxy S2 and I couldn't be happier with my decision.Yes, its slightly bigger but it sits comfortably in the hand, its lightning quick and, if you wish, you can set it up pretty much exactly like the iPhone is.
Best phone around atm in my opinion.

Like i say, download FasterFix from the market and set the server to the UK. Sorts the GPS issue out.

As for it using wifi or your mobile network to work out where you are as well, it indeed does. To check its on, go to Settings > Location And Security and make sure Use Wireless Networks is ticked.

I thought 'Fastfix' could only be used on rooted phones. If that is the case it's not the answer unless you want to go down the rooting road as well.
If it's being used from inside the house it may not be picking up the satellite signal properly. (It does say 'requires view of sky') Although that said mine picks up in the house without any problem. I would also check that Wireless Networks is ticked as you say.

As for the bars etc..for signal.strength I wouldn't worry too much about them if it doesn't lose the signal. Some phones are more accurate/sensitive with the bars than others.

There's no contest! The SG2S blows the iP4 out of the water.

In the past I've always resisted having a iP but I buckled in Jan this year. Having used it for 6 months I finally gave up and got the Sammy. I wish I'd never wasted my time with the iP.

The speed at which the SG2S runs is amazing. The connectivity is second to none. The fact you can throw almost any file at it and it will display/work without any restrictions is a major plus point.

The battery life isn't the best on the market but the iP is no better. Just buy a juice pack. I'll be buying one when they eventually get stocked somewhere.

As for comments on the GPS. If people read the instructions they will see that GPS is supposed to be used outdoors. If you don't know where you are when in a building then what good will GPS be!?

It's about time a manufacturer produced something that knocked the smug Apple mob off their high horse!

Indeed, its for rooted only phone, but to be honest, rooting is the way to go. Not only can you change the GPS you can install the fabulous Adfree which gets rid of all ads in free games

You can easily unroot it by reflashing the stock ROM and Samsung will be none the wiser.

Ah, but they will unless you know how to fix it.

On the galaxy S2 they don't stop you flashing roms and rooting but what they do is keep track of how many times you have done it with a counter. You can reset this however with a little device from ebay if needed.

All i have done so far is rooted my phone but, when i start it up now i get a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. You can also get rid of that.

The fact that phones4u still charge more for obsolete technology and people accept it is simply staggering.
