Icon on Samsung phone

I have a Samsung GT-E1170, and have noticed an odd icon at the top of the home screen. It is not listed in the instruction leaflet and I am wondering what it means.

It is illustrated here and is the one above the "20" in the time. (I hope I have got the Flickr upload correct as I have never used it before).

Can anyone explain it please?

It looks like a (really bad) cassette tape - so could it be an indicator that you have a new voice mail?

I thought that, but it doesn't seem so.

OK, thanks. When I am able to, I will recheck it, but the phone is 20 miles away for a few days.

I have the phone back again and have rechecked the voicemail and, as before, there is nothing there, but the unknown icon is still being displayed.

Does it have a SD card? If it does take it out and reseat it. Also take out the sim power down, reinsert the sim and see if that does it....The only other thing I can think of is that it's indicating an update is available for download...But, doubt it on that particular phone...

Failing that..................................Mystery!!!

Have tried SIM/Battery out. So it is "Mystery still".

Think of it as a unique feature.........

Well, I still haven't found out what the icon was about, but I have managed to get rid of it.

It was something to do with voicemail, but I don't know what. There was definitely no voicemail waiting, but I got rid of the icon when I recorded a test voicemail to the phone, recovered it and then deleted it.

The mystery remains, but the icon doesn't.
