It has gone really camp with alot of its plots not that I have a problem with that but how is Corrie going keep its fan base while it is heading down that road? It needs to stop being silly it is no longer a soap more like a bad comedy.

You've got Todd, who's a gay character. Now another gay character has come in for a while. Those are the only gay characters.

If you're referring to Jack and the bowls team - none of it is gay as such, is it? And presumably the whole Haylen/Jack/Edie Bradshaw shoryline has now finished anyway.

I just find the way that it is all wrote and acted out really camp for some reason and I never have before.

Corrie has always been camp. Read some of the posts by other members (who have been watching Corrie for decades) on the soaps board and you'll see. The only difference now is that they actually have an out gay character being camp

I think this new character Sean is brill, a breath of fresh air - can't wait to see what happens next now that he's installed in the Grimshaw household

Corrie has always been camp. I have watched it from the early seventies. The greatest characters have always been slightly larger than life and I have loved it. I also think Sean is a fantasatic addition to the programme.

I agree Corrie has always been camp, when it was first announced Todd would come out as gay, many people joked that Todd might be the first openly gay man on the Street but is he really the first gay man? With handbag swinging men such as Reg Holdsworth, Norris Cole, Derek Wilton, even that creep Tim who dated Candice a few months back was quite camp. I agree the camp factor has been even more noticable lately with Jack dressing up as Ida, an Ede Bagshaw turning out to be that she was actually Eddie Bagshaw lol But thats Corrie comedy for you and its always been like that.

And its funny, that Todd the first ever openly gay character on Coronation Street, is probably the least camp guy to walk down the Cobbles lol Now Sean, he is another matter. I wouldn't say Corrie is focusing too much on the gay market, its always appealed to the gay audience, only this year is the first year they actually dealt with a gay storyline, an why not? most other parts of society have been portrayed on Corrie, why not gay characters? And they've done it really well. Even with Sean who I sort of dreaded arriving, he cracked me up last night.

Was the Todd/Karl story 'aimed' solely at the "Gay" market?? Come on! That is the same as suggesting that the Dev/Sunita/Maya story is aimed at the "Asian" market... or the Sally storylines are aimed at bored menopausal women!

Yeh, it's always been camp - Norris and Rita have been camping it up for years The creator of CS Tony Warren is gay so it's hardly surprising. That kind of humour is, for me, the best thing about it.

Todd is about to dissappear, so they need to get him in with Shaun quick because they cant just make Shaun stay around for no reason can they?

Corrie is, always has been, and hopefully always will be camp. THAT is its appeal. Even the original stalwarts like Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples and Annie Walker had certain a campness about them; not surprisingly as Corrie was created, as another poster has already indicated, by an openly gay man.

On a more serious note, if you had written "Corrie focussing too much on the Black/Asian/Jewish market", you would have been roundly and rightly criticised - or, at least, I hope you would. So why do you imagine you can get away with singling out its supposedly being "too gay"?

Loopy I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt because I don't think she meant that she had a problem with gays in soaps. I think in her own opinion, she meant that Corrie has been extra camp as of late, and it has admittedly but its also been great. If Loopy doesn't like how camp its gotten, then thats her own opinion and we shouldn't start playing the "you have a problem with gays" card straight away, as I don't think theres any evidence thats what she meant.

a lot of people who I know who watch Corrie (myself included) are not gay, but really enjoy the campness of the show, Sean yesterday just had me in stitches! I don't think the "gayness" of the show is aimed at Gay people, straight people find just as interesting, i.e Todd/Sarah/Karl.

oh BH, they are taking it way too seriously. it was an honest observation in the snared thread that more p[eople have recently taken an interest...some people take things to heart too much!

Judging from the two air stewards I know (stereotyping, but actually true) campness in the air is actually pretty much unavoidable...

You can't possibly get any camper than Bet Lynch/Gilroy. She was so camp, she invented a new level of campness. That's what makes Corrie so different to Eastenders and any other soap. I can only think of Viv Windsor in any other soap who can be called camp.

I find it bizarre when people think that gay stories are aimed only at the gay market, as if straight people aren't going to be interested at all. Gayness is a part of life, its all around us and I see no problem with Corrie taking that on board.
and I'd agree, there have been a hell of a lot of closet cases in the street over the years I suspect.
