A couple of pins of my Ipod Touch were bent, hence sound only coming out of one speaker.....only had it 6 weeks so took it to Comet, they sent it to their own repairs who after a week sent it back saying it had invalidated the warranty.....a local firm said the same and said I needed to replace it costing £200....so i booked an appt at Apple store reasonably local and they were great...friendly, proffesional and replaced it for free....best customer service ever!!!!

Apple do generally have excellent aftersales service. They are the only manufacturer I'd recommend going to if a fault develops as it can be a lot easier than trying to get the retailer to accept responsibility under the sales of goods act and most of the time you will walk out with a new working device

You do have to hand that to Apple, they do their utmost to provide the best possible customer perception (so that buyers of their products keep coming back for the new improved one next year), and within the warranty period, they do tend to be very generous about what they'll replace.

Outside the warranty period and you'll soon be on your own. I suppose you could go to the "genius bar" (a bunch of guys who aren't as clueless as those employed in other high-street stores, but certainly won't be able to fix any serious issues), but if the warranty has expired, the best solution will always be this years new Apple product.

They're a mixed bag. Great at first, but after a year, you'll be expected to buy a new product to replace your now obsolete one (it won't actually have software update support discontinued for two or three years from when it was launched, but newer models will get all the new features).

I got the impression that even after the year warranty period they would of replaced it!

They replaced my friend's 3G, which was well out of warranty, with a brand new one. They also replaced another friend's almost new iPhone 4, despite him knowing it was water damaged and the Genius Bar guy telling him it was "full of water".

However, another friend didn't manage to get his out of warranty 3GS replaced when the sleep/wake button stopped working. They offered to replace it, but for something like £120.

It seems to me that if you're within warranty, they'll pretty much hand you a new one. If it's out of warranty, it's a bit of a mixed bag. But that's still better than most other companies offer.

The Apple Store is a great concept. Obviously you are paying a premium for the Apple brand in the first place but what other technology manufacturer allows you to have a good play with their products before buying and provides aftersales support in the high street?

Just out of interest how much do apple charge to change a battery in a iphone 3GS that is out of warranty? How long does it take?

I think it's about £70 fixed fee, but they will exchange it for another there and then. If you really need to keep your phone then there are plenty of places that will replace the battery.

Never had experience with the repair guys in the Apple Store (the genius bar) but whenever I go in there to buy something or ask about something they seem pretty helpful. I was in one this morning to ask about some software for my Mac and the guy who I asked told me all I needed to know. They are quite good. Don't think much of the workshops or classes they offer though, but that's another topic

It's a lovely thought. Don't expect it or you'll be disappointed.
