Can i just put it on record now, there is no requirement whatsoever for a child to have a mobile phone. Aint no way my daughter will be having a phone until she works to pay for one herself.

As aforementioned it's well worth getting a giffgaff sim card for her, providing O2 have a good signal coverage in your area as they run on the same network.
As for what handset to get, what exactly will she be using the phone for? If she's not after anything particularly fancy when it comes to features, the Samsung Tocco Lite is worth a punt.

11 year olds with mobile phones...and to think about allowing them on contract??
Perhaps I do need to enter the 21st century, but it just seems very odd to me that kids 'need' mobile phones, when 10/20 years ago more kids played out rather than staying indoors playing computer games as they do now, and yet we never needed mobiles then???
