Samsung Tab 10.1 V Motorola Xoom
wench
15-08-2011
Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone can give me some pointers on which of the 2 I should go for.

My main priorities is for it to be 3G capable, 10 inch screen and NOT an ipad!!

I'm not that fussed about the intricate technical details, but from what I can see the Samsung seems to be £100 more than the Motorola simply because its a bit lighter?

Is there any reason you would choose one over the other?

Also I'm off to Hong Kong next week, any reason why I shouldn't buy it over there if I find it cheaper?

Thanks in advance

If you can find a shop allowed to sell you a Tab, buy it. Motorola's support attitude to non-US customers so far has been shocking.

In order of preference.

1) Samsung 10.1
2) Asus Transformer
3) HTC Flyer
4) Motorola Xoom
5) Acer Iconia
6) Toshiba Thrive

Not to mention the upcoming HTC 10 inch Puccini and Samsung 8.9 inch tablet. So the Xoom is a no no. I know no one who has tried both who would choose the Xoom.

Allowed to sell me a tab? Am I missing something here? (sorry not very techy me so I may have not heard)

So Samsung's customer service is miles better from what you are saying? For me good service is worth paying more for.

Is the Asus Transformer 3g capable?

Can you get a 10 inch version of the HTC?

Those are my main requirements.

Answer to both is not yet. Asus 3g was due sometime in August but no date has been confirmed. If you cant wait the 10.1 inch is the way to go.

I have the Xoom and there's nothing wrong with it.
It took a while for Motorola to come up with the android 3.1 update, but it's there now.

Not sure what advantages the Samsung would have as I haven't tried it, but I would have thought they would be almost identical in terms of operating system, speed etc?

A minor gripe I have with the Xoom is that all the ports are grouped at the bottom (for docking purposes), so you can't charge it with the case closed. Wether that's different with the Samsung, I know not?

Can I ask if you have had any need to contact their customer support and if so what did you think?

I'm gathering that its the customer support side of things that are dragging the motorola down, as opposed to the actual functionality of it.

No, I haven't contacted Customer Support.
I think what they mean is that Motorola took ages to come up with the 3.1 upgrade in Europe, and gave very little feedback about it, so perhaps can't be trusted to come up with future upgrades?

BTW, what Pugwash69 was talking about earlier is that Apple has a lawsuit to try to stop Samsung and Motorola selling their tablets in Europe, because of their supposed similarity to the iPad, and they have been granted a temporary injunction by a court in Germany I think, to stop Samsung selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
How far that injunction reaches is yet to be tested, but you might be better to buy sooner rather than later?

Oh right, is that what people mean by its lack of support then.

I've just read about the injuction now, however as I am planning to buy it in Hong Kong, I'm hoping the injunction wont be global yet and just limited to the EU so I think I might be lucky in getting one from Asia.

Thanks for your input btw

The injunction has nothing to do with the sale of the devices. It's Samsung importing them into the EU that has been (temporarily) stopped by the injunction.

There's nothing to stop other people importing them, or shops with stock selling them.

Maybe also consider the next gen of Archos 10.1" tablets. The new flagship will have a dual core 1.5ghz processor and can accommodate a 3g data card. Both flash and hard drive based models due at the end of September, and likely to be in the £250-£350 price range.

Google the Archos 101G9. Rumours also that Amazon will be releasing their Kindle tablet, with a 10" inch screen also.

If only for low weight travel the Archos 101 is king.

Prob is that I'm off to Hong Kong next week and was looking to get while I was out there so I'll be limited to what's available now, unless I don't find any then I may wait.

Spoke to a Sony rep and Sony are also bringing one out in sept to rival the Samsung but I reckon their prices will be extortionate.

Only if it's more than the equivalent of £390 though.
