Great album. Not that I'm biased or anything. It's incredible to see how much she's grown as a songwriter since then.

She has said that listening back to her debut album is like listening to a younger sibling, like it's not quite her because she's changed so much. She was pretty young. One interesting fact in the book I mentioned is that 'Failure' was the first song she wrote and completed when she was 14.

Forgot to say that I was pleased to read in the book that she wants to "try different styles and genres of music". I have noticed a soulful tone to parts of some new songs and she recently played one of them live on an electric guitar instead of an acoustic. I reckon the next album could have more of a bluesy feel with more electric guitar lines but I'll probably turn out to be wrong.

Also, Laura won't be at the Mercury Prize award ceremony next week as she's back in the US touring again. Bit of a shame as I expect she would have performed something and apparently Channel 4 are showing the whole show this year (albeit the following day I think).

I've heard that before It must be like looking at childhood photographs or video footage.

I didn't know that about "Failure" though.

If you want a laugh, listen to this radio session Laura did recently and fast forward to 2:25 of the first song (I was An Eagle) to hear an unfortunate but funny choking incident....made all the funnier by it happening on the line "pass me a drink" and then of course followed by "I've damn near got no dignity left". Perfect comic timing .

I finally got around to listening to the songs Laura wrote for the RSC's production of As You Like It (they are on Spotify and iTunes). Reviews of the play I saw were positive and had good things to say about the music so I thought I'd check them out.

Despite not being a fan of musical theatre I enjoyed most of it. Well, I liked it when the male actors and the whole cast were singing, the female voices have that typical musical theatre style of singing which lacks any real emotion to me and it just made me want to hear Laura singing them instead as it would have sounded much better imo.

So yeah, if you're a fan of Laura and/or Shakespeare/musicals it's worth a listen imo. If you've got a Spotify account, here's the link to the album:

Thinking about it, I doubt there are many artists who've received as much praise for their work as Laura this year. Whether it's the album, the live reviews of the 70 odd gigs she's done including those unique 'Secret Cinema' shows, the songs and music she wrote for the Shakespeare play or the one-off performances like the Proms. It's all been overwhelmingly positive. She doesn't read reviews but her parents do so they must be very proud..

You're right smudged they were queuing up to praise her. Guy Garvey, Paul Weller and Jimmy. I keep hearing rumours too that Neil Young and Dylan are both huge fans which is quite something as apparently neither of them like anything released after 1962. The coolest thing about her is it probably wouldnt matter a jot to her. The funniest interview I've read yet with Laura was in Uncut where she described in tones of 'real annoyance' how she was 'summoned' by Joan Baez...

Ethan Johns is up for 'Producer of the Year' again for his work on Laura's album. It's an award given out by The Music Producers Guild but the winner also gets given the Brit Award for producer of the year. You can see all the award nominees here:

He actually won the award a few years ago for Laura's previous album but I see no reason why he shouldn't get it again .

Listened to I Speak Because I Can again today. Goodbye England fairly jumps out on a pretty flawless record. Just compellingly gorgeous. She really should've been around in the sixties, to be honest, the run of albums she's had now are up there for me, in terms of quality, with Dylan's mid 60's run.
