BluRay players and dvd's....

I am about to buy my first BluRay player, and I just wondered if there are any issues playing any dvd's on these machines? Is it like a few films wont play?

Had no problems so far: CDs, commercial DVDs and homemade DVDs all fine. The only thing I haven't tried is a Blu-Ray as they seem to be a total rip-off.

If we are talking commercially produced DVDs then generally there isn't but there is always the odd chance that a player won't like a particular DVD disk. If you have any Region 1 DVDs in your collection then obviously you will want one modified for multi-region.

Check before you buy, which disk formats your preferred blu ray player supports, does if support DVD-R, DVD+R etc!

If you buy a cheap tacky supermarket player then you might find playback issues.
The Curtis and its clones has problems with a few dvd's ( and some Blurays too) so you might be unlucky enough to have them in your collection.

Stick to something like a Panasonic and you could go to a specialist dealer like Richer Sounds who will supply you with a quality model and for about a tenner extra they will modify it for multiregion dvd playback.
Thats dvd only. Bluray mulitregion is somewhat more expensive.

Unlikely that any Bluray player will be picky with any recordable discs.

Sony in my opinion. I had a Panasonic BDP 30 which stopped playing Blu ray discs just after a year, but would play DVD's fine

Go with Sony. Better, in my opinion.

There's not a lot of difference really but I prefer Sony. Just do a bit of research and read some reviews before choosing - http://www.whathifi.com/reviews/home...lu-ray-players

Blu rays are often only a quid or two more expensive than DVD. Also isn't it a bit pointless buying a blu ray player and never using it for blu rays?

I had a Sony Bluray player and when it was in standby I would press OPEN and it would take over 60 seconds before the tray opened.

I currently have a BDP30.
Purchased in December 2008 , its fully multiregion for both dvd and Bluray and it has never failed to play any dvd or Bluray I have put in it.

When other players including Sony ones failed to play Avatar without an update my Panny had no problems whatsoever.

It has required no updates whatsoever ever since I bought it.

I have had a cheapish sony blu ray player for almost 2 years now, its never had a software update and always played every disc.
OK it dont have a eject on the remote and it can take a while to boot up and load discs but it gives a fantastic picture thats for sure.

I had a panasonic BD 30 about 2008 its still going strong at a friends. Replaced with an LG not sure of model number but loads blu rays faster plus got built in wireles lan. This week had a new media centre thats got les room for the AV receiver , freeview box and blu ray player than I thought. So added a Panasonic DMRBWT 700 blu ray freeview reccorder. LG blu ray going in me bedroom.
Got a good deal at Richer sounds plus till ther end of the month Panasonic got 7 blu ray movies up for grabs
