Ive spoken to sony online support and they are insisting its because im using a 9 year old sim card and it cant handle all the technology in the phone so i need a new sim. How pausible is this? Or have I just been fobbed off?

By the way I spoke to 02 support and they insisted the sim wasnt the problem

Its possible. A SIM from that period may not contain a service centre number (they needed to be entered manually at that time) I doubt there are many people working for mobile companies who remember that.

If possible, you can manually enter the text message centre number into the phone (see O2 site) or ask O2 for a replacement SIM which will have the advantage of it being 3G)

Incidentally if the SIM number starts 8944163 then its a good idea to get it replaced anyway, as they don't work well in smartphones.

Could be wrong but does it need a 3g capable SIM?

You could try this page and have the settings for your phone sent to you, hopefully the MMS settings will be the same as normal SMS.
