Yes, I'm a bit embarrassed about that. I've travelled around Italy and haven't bothered to find out it's History......Garibaldi and all that. The biscuits also came to mind.

The Florentines think they speak the perfect Italian... that much I did know.

Shame. I found the episodes on youtube, but unfortunately they're in Italian, also without subs.

No, not yet. Mr.RP isn't keen on Sky, but I think he will be when I tell him what he's missing.
I didn't realise there's Sky Arts.

This reminds me of when I was once on holiday in Italy.
The TV in the hotel room was on - I was getting ready to go out, when suddenly I heard .. "Ispectore Barrnaaabeeeeee.....!"
It was a dubbed episode of Midsomer...

I didn't realise Midsomer Murders was so popular in Europe and beyond - had a look on Wikipedia. Funny how we don't take it seriously but people abroad seem to like it.

My football team , Nottingham Forest are known as the Garibaldi Reds. Garibaldi had visited Nottingham in 1864 and the club were founded the following year and adopted the red shirts worn by Garibaldi's followers. Almost totally off topic I know!

The programme is nothing like the Danish dramas but I quite liked it.

From a Forest fan site re Garibaldi

you may be wondering whether the famous garibaldi biscuit has anything to do with General Garibaldi. Well it has. Garibaldi instructed his cook to devise a lightweight, high energy foodstuff that his men could eat whilst on the march. He came up with the garibaldi biscuit.

Sky Arts is really interesting channel, a bit like BBC4 but with more music shows They might repeat Romanzo Criminale again at some point.

Oh I'm sure - in between breaks - Salvo speaks perfect English and the scripts get discussed between them before the actually shootings - they shot the interpreter lol!

I didn't realise film 4 were doing a vampire week - so thanks for putting me onto the scent . I'm recording the lot, I love 'em but no idea when I'll get around to watching them.

Don't worry about it, I've always been interested in history

As for speaking the perfect Italian I would that every region thinks they speak the perfect Italian

As I've said before there's something in us that identifies with the Scandinavian countries more than the Southern European, we wallow in the dark, the depressing!”

Is it me or is there something a little dated about the shows as well. The computers look ancient and the mobile phones have stubby antenae. Does anyone know when IM was actually filmed? Thanks.

I was never that interested in history at school but once I started travelling to places it fired an interest in me and now I love most things history related - especially when the facts are different to the common perception of the way things were.

Yeah I saw someone say that on Twitter. Maybe tonight's will be fairly dated too.

It's another one from 1999 and next week's one is from 2000

According to IMDB Svartman/Catarello has appeared in every episode of Montalbano

My money is on the policeman with whiplash

That police doctor reminded me of "Max" from the early days of Inspector Morse

I read the Independent review and I think he has missed the point. I have been watching the Australian series 4 and 5 DVD's and its like drinking red wine. The first glass is not great, but the rest taste better and better. You really get addicted to this series and in to it after a while and eventually you realise quite how good it actually is.

I think comparing Spiral, Wallender, The Killing and Montalbano is a mistake they are all good, but for completely different reasons. Any comparison is pointless.

Much better this week - no dodgy subbing and a plot that made sense.

I like the red wine analogy!
