Yeah I read the first few pages of The Voice of the Violin on Amazon and it says that they put Catarella on the phones as that's where they thought he could do the least damage.

Nope, Catarella is a nightmare!

Had to chuckle at Montalbano's "Since when did you become so English?" line to another character. He went on to talk about drawing a discreet veil over a situation instead of taking advantage of it - so that's how they see us! And they also mentioned 'Swedish frankness'.

I have to say that Catarella is my favourite character in the series.
A fine comic performance by Angelo Russo,who is,at times,a real scene stealer.
As for the series,having seen all 22 films,the joy for me is,apart from the stories,it's depiction of the Southern Italian/Scilian love of life,food,wine,and beautiful women(but not necessarily in that order).

Enoying this even more now after I was a bit iffy about the first programme.Another complicated plot last night and I'm pleased that Monty always explains it at the end.

Why does Livia live overseas , or at least on the mainland?

The houses in Sicily certainly need a bit of attention, a plasterer would make a mint living out there.

Nice to see how MentalBaldo first met Ingrid - she was in one of the two IMs that were previously shown on BBC4 - I like her, she's got a lovely laugh!

I don't think she is - her lip movements seemed to be in sync with the soundtrack, whereas Livia's definitely aren't.

Fair enough - I tend to agree. I don't know why Katharina Böhm (Livia) couldn't at least attempt the Italian script even if her accent was so bad it had to be dubbed anyway so that there would be lip sync.

(I am reliably informed that non-Welsh speakers can look as though they are singing the Welsh anthem "Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi" by mouthing "My hen laid an egg at the top of a tree" - perhaps someone should have tipped off John Redwood )

Which is rather odd because he was talking to his friend in the media and the UK is famous for its lurid headlines, political scandal exposees and sexploitative crime stories, we are not remotely likely to cover things up, indeed Montalbano seems quaintly old fashioned and polite to us compared to any UK crime drama since the 1970s.

He would more correctly refer to France where, until the DSK saga, they have covered up all their political 'private life' stories and indiscretions.

I'm absolutely loving Inspector Montelbano now ... although it took me a while to get into it.

Who wouldn't want to live in his house right on the sea - definitely makes me want to visit Sicily.

I read that the language is often true Sicilian rather than Italian and I've noticed IM tends to say "arrividella" rather than "arrividerci".

Quirky and old fashioned ... and I'm loving the way he tampers with evidence either intentionally or not. So unlike modern forensic-led crime drama.

The character of Ingrid Sjostrom is played by Isabell Sollman who was born in Sweden.
She has appeared periodically in the series from 2000 to 2011.
